Should we get an Australian TLD?

We are launching a product in Australia which is already available in the UK. We currently have the .co.uk but the .com is not available. How important would it be to get the Australian TLD? I am interested in hearing from people who have knowledge of the Australian market to understand how they would feel about buying from a .co.uk.
I know the US market wouldn't be keen to buy from a .co.uk, so would be interested to know if the same would be true of Australia.
The product is a crafty mum to mum product, invented by a UK mum and that is part of the appeal, which may make the UK domain more palatable?
The client has a small budget and low profit margins so creating a whole new website could be prohibitative. So I am keen to go down the route of a sub-directory targeting Australia if possible.

I ran an online shoe shop for many years and we occasionally got sales from Australia - it was appealing of course as the seasons are opposite to ours, so selling boots in our summer would have been a massive boon. The other advantage, of course, is that there is no VAT for a UK company selling into Australia - (I'm not 100% certain that there wouldn't be if you breached a certain threshold but it was the case for us).
The problem for us was that our pages just did not rank at all in Google.com.au. When we tried marketing through Google AdWords, sales were terrible and we had to switch the ads off even though we were offering free shipping. When they saw the .co.uk floods of doubts about shipping time and reliability were clearly as an issue.
My view is this. If we had bought an Australian domain - .co.au then we would have started to rank for many of the products that we were attempting to sell over there. We couldn't have got around the shipping issue as it would still have taken 7-10 days to get the items there, but I'm certain our sales would have been substantially higher.
You can try a subdirectory that might work after a fashion. You could even try a subdomain like au.sitename.co.uk. (But frankly, if you are going to go that far I would set up a simple Australian website).
I think you know though that the only true way to appeal to the Australian market is to set up an Australian version of the site. Maybe you can get someone to build a simple Wordpress version, highly optimised for SEO?
So
1. Best way - set up an Australian version (you should own the domain name anyway as later the decision may be easier)
2. Compromise - sub-domain
3. Weakest way - sub-directoryYour biggest challenge is, of course, marketing the product - who am I to say that if the media picked up on it in Oz and you got a 'heap' of backlinks from Australian news agencies that your page wouldn't rank, it might... but then again...
Playing devil's advocate - if you lack the money to set up the Au site then that may suggest that you need to maximise sales in the UK first before thinking about tackling a country 10,000 miles away.

Will I get Penelized for having a .co.uk site AND a .com site?
Hi Mozers, I have a very important pitch coming up which needs to tackle a questions about international SEO. My client currently has a .com website, but we are debating internally about creating a .co.uk website too so that we can localise content for the UK versus American English on our .com site. Currently, our clients proposition is global, so we made the decision to create a .com website but using American English spelling as a large chunk of English speakers in the world use American English over British English. However, we want to grow the business within the UK, and therefore want to use British English language. Hence creating a .co.uk website. Now, my question is this.... the new .co.uk website will be identical content as the .com website, except for a few spelling changes and the way we phrase certain sentences. How would we be able to run both a .co.uk site and .com site without being penelized from Google for plagarism? Would it involve href lang tags? Server hosting location? Any ideas from you guys out there?

Getting Schooled in Local by 'Lesser' Brands?
Hi Moz! First question I've asked here. I've been working on campaign for my company (regional solar installation company in Northeast USA) for close to 7 years, we've always done well in local search but recently have noticed sites that, for lack of a better word, we 'school' in terms of all the usual metrics - better/more consistent local listings, better domain strength, better backlink profile, bigger company (in the real world), brand recognition, etc... However recently we have started seeing smaller competitors beat us in state-specific rankings, using stuff I would call 'old school' SEO that is no longer really tolerated, in theory - stuffing keywords onto page, keywords in domain, etc... domains of much less strength pulling #1 or #2 terms. Based on data I don't actually think keywords like "solar + state name" are actually that powerfully but frankly it is bit embarrassing to get crushed by 1-2 person companies when you have a 150+ company with a three-person in-house digital marketing team. My strategy so far has consisted of building a better Google review solicitation process, adding schema markup to our project gallery, and some SEO 101 stuff like reworking keywords and title tags. I've noticed a strong uptick on our site of leads from outside our territory (like folks from all across the USA who are NOT in our service territory) - I'm almost thinking I've done 'too good' a job of building a nationally relevant website and not enough state-specific options. Has anyone ever experienced something like this? Any clever strategies beyond the obvious? Can share more specifics if it'll be helpful. Cheers,

How do you get on Google Define?
I've noticed that when searching "define: _________ " there are times when Google will bring up a definition from a website. An example of this is when I searched "define: meta tag". Google brings up the definition given by searchenginewatch.com. When searching "define: meta description" Google returns a definition from hubspot.com. I also searched "define: seo" and Google returned a result from Wikipedia. So here's my questions: 1. How do I create a definition that appears in the SERPs? (is there code I should use for this? Does anybody know exactly how to do this?) 2. if I get a definition up, would the location effect the returned results? e.g. I put up a definition for "gobbledygook" on dansnasvhillebarbershop.com (of course located in Nashville). When Nashville locals search for the definition of "gobbledygook" will it pull the definition from dansnashvillebarbershop.com? 3. Do you have any places where I can read more about how it works and strategies to get definitions to come up in google? Thanks!

How to get links for boring niches/industries?
I've asked this question before, but it's 12/18 months on, the SEO landscape has changed, and new people are aboard. So basically, how do others look/achieve links for industries that generally have static sites with little to report. My books are awash with forklift truck, accountants, concrete companies. Very little happens in their businesses - someone orders concrete... my client delivers concrete. Someone orders a forklift.... my client sends a forklift..... Yes, we can do a bit of social, but where else would people go for link building. If my client was a wedding photographer, a mountain climber or cancer specialist, I'd be rolling in ideas, as it is, I find myself a little stumped sometimes.
