Does Google need Analytics installed to create metrics?
-
Hi Mozers,
Does Google know time on site, number of page visits, bounce rate, etc. even if Google Analytics is NOT installed? Does it measure all that stuff anyway, and if you install the GA code on your site, that is so that YOU can see those metrics?
OR can Google only see those metrics if you install GA on your site?
Thanks! Jane

Answering your question about if can Google Analytics track your data even when is not installed? the answer is NO, it can't
Let me explain my point
Understanding Google Analytics reports and capabilities requires an understanding of the basic principles. Knowing what data Google Analytics can capture and how it interprets it is key to making sense of the software.
At its most basic level, Google Analytics consists of
- JavaScript code on each page of a website,
- A data collection service on Google's servers
- A processing engine that creates report data
1. Google Analytics JavaScript Code
When a visitor arrives at a page with tracking code, the code is executed by his browser. It collects information about the visitor's browser and computer settings, like screen resolution, operating system, etc. The script's visibility is pretty limited. It can typically only see what it's told.
The script then sets a few cookies containing some basic visit information. These cookies determine whether it is a new or returning visitor, among other things.
2. Google Analytics Data Collection Service
Next, all of this information must be sent to the Google Analytics servers so it can be processed. The GA tracking code sends the information by requesting a very small file, named __utm.gif. It appends all the cookie data and information it just collected to the query string for __utm.gif. This way, Google's servers have a record of when a file was requested and all of the visitor information about that pageview.
Many organizations store a copy of every tracking request sent to the data collection service - this is accomplished with the setLocalRemoteServerMode(); function in ga.js. Once you have a local copy of Google Analytics tracking requests, you can process them with Angelfish Software and turn them into interactive reports.
3. Processing Visit Information
In the last step, Google Analytics processes all of the __utm.gif requests, applies filters and config settings, and makes the data available to your account.
Visit data is typically processed every few hours, although this frequency has been increasing over time. Google rolled out a set of Real Time data reports in 2011 although the data available in these reports is not comprehensive.
IN SUMMARY
If you don't have the script installed on your site, Google Analytics cannot track your website data. OF Course Im talking just about Google Analytics, because I'm sure that if we talk about Google (Search Engine) is another history

Different statistics in Google Analytics
Hi! A client of mine is having some trouble on his Google Analytics overview. When he checks the yearly report with number of visitors, new visitors, returning, ... he gets statistics that doesn't match mine. Also, he gets a notation from Google that no hits were fired, although the script is still there. On the other hand, I (logged in with another account) am seeing all statistics correctly. FYI: no filters were installed, nor segments, ... Why does the client see different and incorrect statistics? There should be a setting or something I'm overseeing. Hope you guys can help.

Google Analytics goals only show unique event triggers
I have some goals in GA which is linked to different event triggers. However I've found out that the goal is only showing the unique event triggers and not the total. I need it to show the total in order to be accurate. Is there any way to switch that option? I can't find any options like that in GA or guides to do so.

Re-classifying a Traffic Source in Google Analytics
Hey All, I think it's inside of the Admin section of Google Analytics, right now I have a traffic source from the domain of indeed.ca that is being classified as Organic traffic when it should be classified as referring traffic, how can I tell Google Analytics that all traffic from this source should be classified as referral traffic and not organic traffic? Furthermore, after I make this change, will Google Analytics re-classify my past data so I can do a proper analysis? I can't remember how to do this and any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Google Analytics Tracking Code Problems
I am having a problem with my Google Analytics tracking codes. The relevant GA tracking codes have been entered into the source code of certain sites I'm running campaigns on, but Google Analytics is still telling me that the tracking code hasn't been installed - yet it has. What could possibly be the problem here? I have checked that these sites don't run off multiple domains, and that the tracking code has been entered in the correct place within the source code - and yet I am still having problems with GA. Any suggestions?

Google Analytics "Undetermined" Keyword
Google analytics is suddenly showing a new keyword "undetermined". Traffic Sources > Sources > All Traffic with the primary dimension set to Keyword. It's currently our 13th keyword and it is displayed without parentheses around that you see with (not provided) or (not set). Anyone have any idea what this is? Thanks!

Any updates regarding 'not provided' organic keyword referrals in Google Analytics?
I know that the encrypted searches done by people logged into their Google accounts is causing the error, is there any workaround or any update from Google as to IF they will give us our keyword data back? I'm currently losing data on about 20% of my daily searches . . .
