If I have set up my www as a cname, do I still need to add a redirect?
-
Hello,
I am trying to minimize my redirect chains that have been popping up in my Moz crawl issues. So I'd like to get clear on some best practices. I have a few clients that are getting their first redesign in a while. We are moving into Wordpress from good ole .html files. So I've installed a redirection plug in to create 301 redirects for those .html versions of the pages.
But apparently I am already redirecting from www to non-www. I have the www set up as a CNAME going to the IP address - is that counting as the redirection? Sometimes though, the www is set up by making it an A record. Is one way better than the other?
Finally, I'm forcing https for all my new sites now. Is whatever the host does to "force" https also counting as a redirect and contributing to my chain?
Any advice will be appreciated!

Thank you!
Yep - I redirect the .html files to the https domain to as specific a page as possible. Its good to know that I don't have to factor in the CNAME or A records into the issue.
It sounds like I am doing the right things from what you say - yet I do have some redirect chain warnings in my Moz crawl.

I'd like to confirm that a CNAME is indeed not a redirect and that Steve is absolutely right. You will need to set up a proper 301 redirect to go from one to the other.

\The redirects for the old .html structure should go to the preferred domain, ie: https://nonwww.com/most-relevant-new-location
CNAME is not a redirect and just points the user to the right server and I don't think switching is going to have any impact on what you're seeing. Some services like Cloudflare prefer you CNAME your www and non-www to the server to help protect the server IP.
The switch to https is an important one and you want to be sure that you take every step to make that smooth transition, ultimately getting https pages ranked instead of your http versions, and then users will be hitting your preferred URL scheme.

Redirects, SEO and More
Website errors remittent of Chernobyl. First of all, I ask a lot of questions of the community and I don't do a lot of answering. For that, I am sorry! I own a small SEO company and the majority of my clients are upstarts just like myself. We try to do the best we can on a very limited budget.

With that said, the client website in question, http://bestdefensega.com has been a struggle to rank in the metro atlanta lawyer market.
Here's the story. My client is a new solo attorney that practices criminal law and personal injury law. We launched bestdensega.com to focus on criminal defense and my client has also paid AVVO for a website as well. We recently decided to make a monster website that would have 50+ pages and be representative of all that he practices.
I recently put a temporary redirect on bestdefensega.com and pointed it to the avvo website while I was rebuilding the website. I did this using a plugin.
This morning I decided that I wanted to remove the redirect, so I deactivated and deleted the plugin. The redirect is still in effect. I suspect that this may be a cacheing scenario.
How do I undo a redirect?
Also, I noticed that the AVVO site has all of a sudden shot up to the top of the search results and bestdefnesega.com has dropped past the 3rd page for our keywords. Have I lost all of bestdefensega.com's link juice? Also, bestdefensega.com has a spam score of 7. Why? There are no shady links and everything I do is on the up and up. Also Open Site Explorer says that bestdefensega.com doesn't have any inbound links.
Google WebMaster Tools says that the site has of 500 inbound links.. Frustrated, Thanks0 -
Fixing temporary redirects
Hi all, I recently had an issue whereby the Moz crawl was showing up thousands of instances of duplicate content. I solved (or so I thought) this issue on a Magento-based eCommerce website by enabling canonical URL tagging on product pages and category landing pages. This reduced the instances of duplicate content dramatically (by the thousands!) however it created a new issue of thousands of temporary redirects. All of the research I have done has suggested that I should be setting these as permanent redirects somehow, but I am not sure how to do this or how to resolve this issue. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much. Josh

Need to find all pages that link to list of pages/pdf's
I know I can do this in OSE page by page, but is there a way I can do this in a large batch? There are 200+ PDF's that I need to figure out what pages (if any) link to the PDF. I'd rather not do this page by page, but rather copy-paste the entire list of pages I'm looking for. Any tools you know of that can do this?

Why can't I add my facebook page to SEOMOZ? Also having other facebook issues.
Hi, I have no trouble adding my twitter page in SEOMOZ, but its giving me an error when I try to load my facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Eugene-Computer-Geeks/226660334011653 . I also tried adding my personal facebook page which is tied to the Eugene Computer Geeks facebook page, but SEOMOZ wont accept that either. My business facebook page is tied to my personal account, and its also not showing up on the facebook search. Any idea how I can make my business show up? I wish I could just start over fresh and have my buinsess setup with it's own facebook account. Thanks.

Can you set-up a manual SEOmoz crawl?
I received a crawl report yesterday, made some site changes, and would like to see if those changes were done correctly. Rather than wait a week for my automatic crawl to be generated, is there anyway to initiate a manual crawl on a single subdomain as a PRO member? As a PRO member, you can schedule crawls for 2 subdomains every 24 hours, and you'll get up to 3,000 pages crawled per subdomain. When we've finished crawling, your reports will be sent to your PRO email address, which is currently From here... http://pro.seomoz.org/tools/crawl-test

Experencing page authority issues after a 301 redirect
We just completed a build of a new site and used 301 redirects to retain our page authority. In the first week all the interior pages reported a page authority of 1 after 2 or so weeks the page authority began to look more accurate but they were still not as high as the original pages. The strange thing is that when you click on the link to a page the page authority populates correctly but when the page finally finished loading the PA goes back down. Has anyone ever experienced this and if so how did you fix it? Thanks!
