Are there any recent studies of organic CTR vs. PPC CTR?
-
Pretty much the title. I am putting together a "game plan" for my CEO, where I would like to touch on the difference in CTR between SERP organic results and SERP PPC results. I've found a few blog posts that talks about PPC being responsible for 15% of all clicks, where 1-5 organic results are responsible for 68ish % and the rest being on 6-10 and page 2/3. However, I do not see any sources in these articles, which begs the question, where are these numbers taken from? Any suggestions?
My own gut feeling (and SERP behaviour) tells me that these numbers might actually be super accurate, but since my business plan will most likely end up in the hands of our board of directors, I would very much like to back up my action points for growth, with actual sources.
Thanks in advance.

It's not always about CTR. My 1-3 results still get 650% better conversions than anything I do with Paid. Google are certainly taking clicks from top positions and I'm seeing my number one positions getting less clicks. interestingly this is not having any effect whatsoever on the bottom line.
What I do see is when I overtake my competitors they start advertising like mad in the Top Ads for those keywords. But this also doesn't seem to have much of an effect on revenue.
I am trialing something new on the mobile. If you think about it when you type in a query on the mobile you're always going to see the number one ad result first. It's different from desktop where you can kind of completely ignore the ads and look straight at the map for local or the first organic position. But for Mobile 100% of searches see that number one position and there's nothing else on the screen.
So I'm putting together a 'branding' exercise where I focus on getting that number one position for all my keywords and seeing how this affects conversion rates.
I wouldn't get too obsessed with click through rates. Especially with google messing with the layout of the serps so much. Focus on the bottom line and ROAS. And I can tell you for nothing that getting in those 1-3 positions is pure gold no matter what the naysayers say about reducing click through rates.
Organic is also 100% the best way you can spend your time and effort and budget. There's been some big changes recently with (I believe) rolling out previously collected rankbrain data. I don't think it's real time learning. I think google collect data, test it and roll it out. And they recently did that so sites with real quality are now picking up a great deal more search. So the playing field is levelled against the little guys.
Ads will always have their place for offers and immediate stuff - although since you can get a quality page indexed in 3 minutes these days and change a title and meta in a couple of days, I think ad words is still only a moderately good way of spending your budget. But i'll report on how my mobile thing progresses. I have great hopes for it.

I think that the CTR varies wildly.
It depends upon the skill of the person writing the ads and the title. It depends upon the topic they are working with and who they are promoting. It depends how clickbaity, smutty or deceptive they are willing to be. Depends if they are offering free stuff.

Hello, A friend of mine has noticed an increase in organic traffic since they started using AdWords. Has anyone had similar results or could this be coincidence? Thanks in advance!

Impressions data: Google Webmaster Tools VS Google AdWords
Dear community, I was doing some research within Google Webmaster Tools (WMT) keyword data when I noticed that the impressions within this tool are quite different compared to the keyword impression data provided by Google AdWords (ADW). Some specs about the situation: Date: December 2014 (31 days). Keyword: brand + main keyword* (e.g. amazon shoes, if Amazon would have been the client) Visitors come from: the Netherlands (>97%). Search volume: 3,8 K for this branded keyword last year (December 2013), of which >99% came from the Netherlands (source: Google Keyword Planner). Search query data: "impressions" for Google WMT (organic keyword impressions) and “impressions” for Google ADW (paid keyword impressions). Of course the ADW keyword is [exact]. So, what's wrong? The data doesn’t match, while I expected approximately the same amount of impressions assuming the keywords are: both [exact] keywords; (check! ✓) within the same period of time; (check! ✓) the Ad is being displayed "all the time" (check! ✓) the domain/page is being indexed "all the time" (check! ✓) How much of a difference is there? Organic impressions: 7,4 K (source: Google WMT) Paid impressions: 2,1 K (source: Google ADW) Note that the search volume according to Google Keyword Planner of last year is somewhere in between: 3,8K. The search volume from this tool of last December is not available just yet (but I don’t expect much difference here since Google Trends shows a steady search volume). If the difference would have been 10-20%, I wouldn't be surprised at all, but this is huge. **What could explain the differences? ** If a lot of people were using AdBlockers (they do, but not nearly as massively (around 10%)). If we would have made mistakes in AdWords: budget, bidding, targeting etc. - This is not the case, got this confirmed by the manager who double-checked the data and settings. Also: since it’s a branded keyword it’s really cheap for us and easy to get high quality scores. If we would have made mistakes regarding indexing/crawling that would have caused an extreme loss in domain visibility in the SERP's: possibly caused by robots.txt, a noindex-tag, server problems etc. This was not the case and Google WebmasterTools says the average position was 1,0 during the complete month. "Something else" went wrong during that specific period of time with this specific domain. I don’t think so because I checked multiple months and multiple other domains of other clients. These gave me the same relative results (okay, some were a bit closer: 30 K paid impressions vs 62 K organic impressions for instance, still a big difference). What other possibilities are left? The impressions from Google WMT and Google ADW are not the same, even though they are called the same and therefore suggest they should be (about) the same. AdWords just randomly fails to display and/or measure some branded ads (even though there is plenty of budget, bidding is fine and QS is 10/10). Definitions of "impressions" for both tools according Google: AdWords definition of "impressions" WebmasterTools definition of "impressions" Hope someone has some more suggestions or useful links! Thanks in advance! Ektor Tsolodimos

PPC for Luxury Goods Website
Hi Mozzers, I am starting a PPC campaign for a website that sells high-end products. The search volume for the generics is very high but I think the conversion rate on those will be quite low given the price of the products. Does anyone have any experience in doing PPC for high-end retailers and what type of keyword I should be bidding on? Thanks!

How do you assess PPC ROI?
I thought this would be pretty straightforward, but I'm trying to put together my first PPC ROI spreadsheet and it's turning out to be much more complicated than I had anticipated. Would anyone be willing to tell me what you look at to determine the return you're getting on PPC -- and if you're using AdWords and Analytics, what screens/reports you rely on? It seems to be more complex than simply comparing Paid Search Revenue to spend ... but I could be overcomplicating things.

Launching a PPC Campaign during the Holidays
Hi Mozzers- I have a client who is interested in running a PPC campaign. We are all setup to go...Here's my dilemma. The client provides moving services - household and commercial. I'm torn whether or not to launch the campaign during the holidays. Pros: We're not paying for impressions so it won't cost us any more $$. Cons: It probably won't show the best outcome over December - clicks/conversion. Thoughts? Pull the trigger and launch or wait until January? Thanks!

Facebook PPC - Number of Clicks According to FB Different Than Visits in Analytics?
Hi There So I was trying out my first FB ads with a client. I see according to FB there were 105 clicks. But according to google analytics there were only 69 visits. I am counting visits from facebook.com and apps.facebook.com Any reason for this discrepancy, or any tips? Am I missing something? Thanks! 687sfgMVaE 1j56Pm7nD
