International SEO | Question about Hreflang
-
Hi, I have an International SEO question and would like to get some help from Moz forum:
Our company has a Taiwan office for a few years already, but never had any Traditional Chinese (lang code: ZH-TW) webpage publihsed on our site: https://www.abc.com. The regional team recently has built a 50 page ZH-TW microsite based on translations from select pages from abc.com. The site will have it's own navigation. Currently our CMS doesn't have a language directory to support ZH-TW (such as https://www.abc.com/zh-tw)
-
If we do not add a directory, the pages would have to be published as ZH nodes (for Simplified CHINESE) with ZH language tags and canonicals.
-
The only tag we can set for ZH-TW would be the Hreflang tag.
Example:

-
Great to hear all is sorted.

Hi Mazen,
Thank you for your comment. Initially we might thought of using the same URL for both ZH and ZH-TW, but we knew this was not the most ideal solution. And luckily, our dev team just created the proper ZH-TW language directory to address the problem. So this is now resolved. Thank you for your help!
-
Do you mean you'll use the same URL for both ZH and ZH-TW languages?
I'm trying to fully understand what's the setup & the suggested approach. Ideally, you want a URL for ZH and a different URL for the ZH-TW page equivalent.

Self-Generated Backlinks Question
I'm kinda new to the whole backlinks thing. My company does website design and we have, historically, included a statement in the Footer of the websites stating "Website by Our Company" linking back to our own website. Should we be NoFollowing these links? Are they hurting us in any way? Are there any best practices for this?

Migration from HTML to Wordpress - SEO Implications?
I am in the process of having a wordpress site developed to replace my current HTML site. (I currently have my website in html and a blog in wordpress in a sub directory). I am doing this in phases to try and preserve as much of my good rankings as possible. My first phase is to replicate my site with the exact same pages, meta data, and site structure. I'm hoping that google will see this as not much change and not change my rankings for the worse. I also made it a goal that my site speed tests be at least equal to what they are now. We will have to 301 all of the URLs however since it will be going from /example.html to /example. I believe my blog will also need to move into the root directory as well, so I need to 301 all of those pages. I plan to wait a couple months for Phase 2. Phase 2 involves replacing old content (photo galleries), and introducing new content (virtual tours, videos, new pages, etc.) One of my reasons for moving to wordpress is to keep up with current trends a little easier since I have very little time. (I am owner, website maintainer, SEO - all on my own). My question here is three parts. 1. Do you think this strategy will work to preserve my current rankings? 2. Do you have any lessons learned or advice to share with me to make this as smooth as possible? 3. Do I really need to wait to add new content? I might get antsy and want to do it sooner! 🙂 Thank you in advance!

To Genesis or not to Genesis that is the question
Hi everyone, i know this subject has been raised few times in the past, but i wanted to reach out to the community and find out what is your take on the advantages and disadvantage (if any) for using the Genesis Framework when building a new websites for Clients. I know for fact that many developers are complaining that they find it harder to manage the Genesis Framework, which i do appreciate has a bit more of comparability issues when it comes to plugins and modifications, but i always looked at it as a positive rather then a negative. My personal opinion is that Genesis framework is more of a stable Skeleton that is better read by Search Engine (from a technical SEO point view) and is harder for hackers to penetrate. Would have love to hear the community experts opinion pros and cons. Cheers. Dan

Changing from All-in-One SEO to Yoast SEO
I am currently using, and have always used the All-in-One SEO plugin for my website, but I have have heard time and again that the Yoast SEO plugin is superior. How do I transfer to this plugin instead? Do I need to deactivate the all in one seo plugin? What happens to all the tags that are already there for the thousands of pages, including the main page, that is functioning from the all in one SEO plugin?

Should I Remove URL extentions for SEO?
We are having a developer design our website with Magento. I noticed the main pages such as About Us have no file extention in the URL. But the product pages have a .html file extention. I was once told to remove the file extentions. Are there benefits to removing the .html file extension and if so, is there a way we can do this using Magento?

Do you have an SEO 'plugin' recommendation for SharePoint 2007?
I'm not a programmer and our 200+ person company isn't going to change their CMS just because I asked them nicely. Do you know of any SEO plugin I can use on SharePoint 2007? I just don't want to have to keep going into each of 110 websites time after time.
