Hi there,
Sam from Moz's Help Team!
Domain Authority in Link Explorer and the Links section of your Moz Campaign correlates with Google rankings to give you an accurate representation of a sites's ranking power.
To understand how to improve DA (Domain Authority) it can help to get some insight into how we gather our data, which I'll include below. Sorry in advance for the long message!
To calculate DA, we index the web by following links using a crawler. Our crawler is built on a machine-learning based model that is optimized to select pages like those that appear in our collection of Google SERPs. We feed the machine learning model with features of the URL like the backlink counts for the URL and the PLD (pay-level domains), features about the URL like its length and how many subdirectories it has, and features on the quality of the domains linking to the URL and PLD. So, it's not based on any one particular metric, but we're training the crawler to start with high-value links.
In terms of improving your Domain Authority, with the information above in mind, it's best to look at both you on-page SEO to make sure you've covered the basics.
Then you also want to look at your off-site SEO and building more links more links to your site.
There are lots of different areas of Link Building to explore, from patching up broken links, improving your internal link profile, and good ol' fashioned content creation. Here is a great video by our founder Rand which goes over some easy link building tactics to get you started.
I hope that helps to start you off! Let me know if you have any other questions :]

UPDATE: Rolling back an adjustment which had adverse effects on DA and PA scores.
UPDATE: Yesterday's (June 4, 2018) adjustment to our DA/PA metrics turned out to have some unanticipated adverse effects. We're rolling back the adjustment, so by midday tomorrow you should see your scores return to what they were earlier this week. We're also implementing some new procedural checks on our end to help make sure it doesn't happen again. We sincerely apologize for any stress or burden this may have caused. We also want to emphasize that DA and PA are relative metrics. The scores will fluctuate slightly with the index, and for that reason, should be used to compare your site with others. We realize this isn't always easy to explain to clients and stakeholders, so we're working on ways to help you all report these metrics in ways that minimize the potential for confusion. ****** We are continuing to improve our Domain Authority and Page Authority algorithms and strengthen our link index. As of today, June 14, 2018, You may notice a slight variation in current and historic DA/PA scores in Link Explorer and tools that incorporate our new link data such as Campaigns, Keyword Explorer, and MozBar. This is due to a planned adjustment on our end that could be more noticeable than our standard updates. We made this adjustment in order to account for the rapid growth of our link index over the past 6 months and and stabilize distribution of scores over time. For customers who have been tracking DA scores over time, you may want to make note of this adjustment date in your reporting. Rest assured that our DA and PA scores are still far more stable and accurate than they were previously in Open Site Explorer. Our index is now 20 times larger (and growing) and updating daily rather than monthly, therefore standard fluctuations in the index are far less noticeable in your score than before. DA and PA will still always fluctuate slightly and naturally with the index. As the landscape of the internet changes, so should our index to reflect those changes. Whenever we make an update on our end that could be noticeable on your end, we will let you know. Also, please remember that DA and PA scores should always be understood as relative to other sites’ scores in the index, and reported to clients in relation to their competition and not as a standalone metric of individual performance. If you have more questions about DA or the difference between the new score in Link Explorer vs. the old score in OSE, please read this FAQ page, or post a question below and I or a Mozzer will reach out. Thank you! Ian

How can I get links indexed in Just Discovered Links, or Open site Explorer? (Because it aint Bit.ly or Feedly!)
Dear Moz & Forum, I've been on a bit of a merry-go-round with one of my clients. He knows enough about SEO to ask questions, and one thing he likes is to see the links that we are building inside Open Site Explorer. Now, of course we know that it takes a while for links to show, but that was ok, because we could just plug the links that we've built into a bit.ly link and then they'd show under Just Discovered Links in Open Site Explorer, and then boom, we're happy. It stopped working some time ago, and after the support team were a little unstuck I sent a hopeful tweet to @randfish. Here is the response: https://twitter.com/randfish/status/788412272129347584 The advice to use Bit.Ly was removed swiftly after this! Oops! The current Guidance is here: https://moz.com/help/guides/research-tools/open-site-explorer/justdiscovered It says: Want to see your new link in the Just-Discovered Links tab? An easy way to start seeing your link in the Just-Discovered section is to have it shared on Twitter and available on Feedly link. Feedly stopped supporting their own link shortner a few years ago. Also, when you share a link from Feedly on twitter it is just the same as sharing a normal tweet, because it shares the standard URL for the site not a link to view on Feedly. Or, maybe these two statements are independant of one another and they should both be done separately? I've done that too! I've also added the feed to recommended feeds inside fresh web explorer and that didn't work either! So, Moz and Help team please help me! How can I get links I've built for clients into Just Discovered Links? Thank you!

Why Page Authority = 1
Hi everyone! Long time reader, first time-submitter. I'm working with a client who has an old, established domain and brand name, decent DA score (43 overall, 52 for their home page), but almost all the rest of the pages of their small-ish website have a PA of 1. The domain itself has been around since 2000. The pages ranking at a 1 are not new URLs, they have a sitemap submitted to Google, are not being blocked by robots.txt, there's no auto-redirects or meta-refresh, and the response code for all pages is 200. What else am I missing? What could be causing this? TIA for the help!

OSE: Missing back-links and High DA website with low DA backlinks
I have gone through a website with 81 DA; where its link equity back-links with highest DA of 70. Hardly 5 back-links 60 to 70 DA and just 25 root domains. This seems very unusual to me. Can someone clarify this for me? Can a website with low DA back-links can make high DA? If so what could be other major contributing factors for this?

In "Link Opportunities" is there a way to filter by external follow links that pass equity?
In Open Site Explorer, the "Link Opportunities" feature does not seem to have a way to filter for external follow links that pass equity. This would be very useful. Is this a feature in the pipeline or is there already a way to do this?

Why Moz Back links check tool is very Slow compared with other tools?
I've created a new website 50 days old with a vision of sharing high-quality content. I created some pages which are useful and helpful, what make other people link to my site. Early days, two weeks ago I've started checking my backlinks starting with Ahref and majestic. three days ago I decided to join Moz too and use Moz explorer. But, I discovered that Moz tool is too slow compared with other tools. Why? Starting with Ahref. They discovered more than 100 links and updating their data for my site as a new website every 6 hours as I know. Also majestic for the first time discovered six links then every two days they updating their data. Even Google discovered some of my backlinks. Specially links from high-quality sites such as Wikipedia with high-quality pages. Moz tool discovered zero of my backlinks even after subscribing. I don't think Moz need to discover websites like Wikipedia which already indexed by Moz. So, I wonder Why Moz tools are very very very slow like that? Update: (This is a question, not a discussion. So, please don't edit it) Can any Moz support answer please? Thanks.

Open Site Explorer is finding old html Files that havn't been on my site in two years... even after a 301 Redirect. HELP!
Hello!
Link Explorer | | morganlindsaycole
My problem started when I became aware that when I checked my backlinks for the past two years, it states that no backlinks have been found. When I ran a site analysis on SEMrush - No backlinks are found on the URL, or Domain. There are 7 Backlinks on the Root Domain and those were configured in 2012. I made a second domain www.columbusweddingphotographersreviews.comwhere I linked to my domain at www.morganlindsayphotography.com so I could test that google had crawled both websites and after, still no backlink was found. I have also been published on a dozen or so wedding websites that has linked to my website where they are follow links and still nothing. (http://www.brendasweddingblog.com/blogs/2015/2/23/an-elegant-fall-wedding-in-ohio-with-morgan-lindsay-photography) **Website Background- **
In 2012 I had two separate websites - One for Seniors that was an HTML website I build in Dreamweaver at www.morganlindsayphotography/seniors and another for Wedding Clients found at www.morganlindsayphotography.com/Wedding - (wordpress) I had a Splash page wish was found atwww.morganlindsayphotography.com. Two years ago when I became aware splash pages were frowned upon in Google, I combined the two websites and stayed with the Wordpress which was www.morganlindsayphotography.com/Wedding
Because I did not want users to have to go to www.morganlindsayphotography.com/Wedding to view my url, Godaddy moved my wordpress site from thewww.morganlindsyphotography.com/Wedding directory towww.morganlindsayphotography.com When I ran the Open Site Explorer with Moz I found after runningwww.morganlindsayphotography.com the TOP pages on this domain according to Page Authority are old HTML files from my senior website, as well as old Posts from when my wordpress site was found atwww.moragnlindsayphotography.com/Weddings
No current pots or pages are showing up besideswww.morganlindsyphotography.com I do run a cache management system to speed up my system and recently cleaned out my .htcacess folder and still had no luck. This is difficulty something **Last night I made a 301 Redirect in my htaccess for all the old links pointing to the new links as best as I could. My htacess folder looks like this.. BEGIN WordPress <ifmodule mod_rewrite.c="">RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]</ifmodule> END WordPress Permanent URL redirect - generated by www.rapidtables.com Redirect 301 /Wedding http://www.morganlindsayphotography.com/ Permanent URL redirect - generated by www.rapidtables.com Redirect 301 /Wedding/ http://www.morganlindsayphotography.com/ Permanent URL redirect - generated by www.rapidtables.com Redirect 301 /about.html http://www.morganlindsayphotography.com/about-morgan-lindsay/ Permanent URL redirect - generated by www.rapidtables.com Redirect 301 /app.html http://www.morganlindsayphotography.com/blog/ Permanent URL redirect - generated by www.rapidtables.com Redirect 301 /experience.html http://www.morganlindsayphotography.com/senior-sessions/ Permanent URL redirect - generated by www.rapidtables.com Redirect 301 /index.html http://www.morganlindsayphotography.com/ Permanent URL redirect - generated by www.rapidtables.com Redirect 301 /senior.html http://www.morganlindsayphotography.com/ohio-senior-photographer/ Permanent URL redirect - generated by www.rapidtables.com Redirect 301 /seniorsconstruction.html http://www.morganlindsayphotography.com/ohio-senior-photographer/ Permanent URL redirect - generated by www.rapidtables.com Redirect 301 /Wedding/2012/06/22/brittany-reis-jason-mcclaflin-tiffin-ohio-wedding/ http://www.morganlindsayphotography.com/holy-family-church-columbus-wedding/ After I ran the open site moz explorer and the www.morganlindsayphotography/Wedding was still there..0
