Sponsored Directories & Blog Posts
-
In your opinion, is it worth paying for sponsored links in directories like http://www.dmegs.com, rather than the standard free links?
I'm also curious about sponsored posts on Blogs (such as http://www.lovemydress.net/blog/sponsors/) where links are dofollowed, but clearly marked as sponsored.
Will Google penalise me for purchasing these links? Are the links de-valued in any way?

Just wanted to leave a quick note saying that SEOmoz has upgraded our Link Directory! You can view a post Cyrus wrote with more information about the directory update and link building via directories at http://www.seomoz.org/blog/seo-link-directory-best-practices

After sitting through some of SEOmoz webinars and other SEO videos, I gather that search engine technology has advanced to the point where certain sites will get treated differently than others when it comes to linking. Google does have a policy of nofollowing paid links (ads) and does "try" (was the word used by Matt Cutts) to identify sites that sell links and deal with them accordingly. So if the sites you're talking about are selling links, and I don't mean membership that allows linking, it stands to reason Google could catch on, which makes your investment a rather risky one. I would pass, but I'm a really conservative white hat guy.

Hi cmaddison, did one of these responses answer your question, or do you still have more questions? If you could leave a reply or mark a helpful answer, that'd be great!

yes, as links devalue as they iterate through the page as I understand it. This depends on how much it cost to be sponsored. Also if you have many, many pages of links, usually sponsored links are on the first page and therefore not so deep that SEs can't find them.

Sponsored links on directories may mean that you get up a category or two from normal (from /cat/sub-cat/location/site to /cat/ say) and as such more likely to get indexed on that site.
Sponsored posts may have the blog they're on devalued or links not pass juice but really shouldn't be a big risk (in so far as getting a penalty) to you, but may end up being a waste of money.

Reputable Place For Guest Posts
We do our SEO in-house, and I don't have the time for blogger outreach. Does anyone know of a reputable place where I can submit our content to be pitched to relevant outlets for backlinks and US traffic? I am not in it for someone creating our content; I write it myself and have a degree in the content I produce. I am looking for a place that gets REAL US traffic, not some P.B.N. sites or those where I can create accounts at a post myself. I want real traffic from relevant, reputable blogs or a place where I can have them use my content and find niche sites for me.

Are directories worth my time?
So I just came across SEOMoz's directory list. And I wanted to ask what people think about directories. I hear for new sites, they are good. For old sites, not so much. We are launching a new project next week. Should I start submitting it to some directories? Look forward to opinions. I really love this forum, everyone is so helpful!

Backlinking post penguin
Does anyone have any effective strategies about how to backlink for a new website. I'm just really cautious of this new penguin update and don't want to submit to too many directories or do anything that will get penalised, seen as the website is new.

Links from Directory's
I have been looking at the Directory's recommended on the SEOMOZ site. All of those that I have looked into do not appear to have a page rank for the actual page that my link would be appearing on. They all appear to offer N/A as the reply. Is this a problem? Thanks in advance for any replies!

Back linking via blogging
I asked a different question, which this one might over lap. Say your website has 100 pages, and you blog on different sites for back linking- should you do an article per page to keep the back linking to each page fresh? So for a person like me this would take me 100 days to recycle around. Just trying to figure out the best way to do back linking.

Guest Blogging - Build a relationship with a few blogs and post only there or post a few on as many good blogs as possible?
I'm curious which strategy is better in the short term and in the long-term? Part of my link building strategy involves contacting bloggers and posting some guest blogs on their sites. Now there are advantages with posting on a few blogs and creating a link between you and the blog readers and the blog owner. It also saves time trying to contact blog owners etc. However would my time be better spent contacting hundreds of blogs and seeing where I can guest blog and then post on as many as possible; in order to have a diverse number of links going back to my website? What do you think is the best option and why?

Commenting on an old post
I've been playing around with OSE and found one of my competitors has a decent link coming from a post created in 2008. It only has two comments, one from my competitor with a link back to his site. The page has a PA: 55, it seems like an easy link but since the post is 3 years old im not sure its appropriate even though commenting is open. Any thoughts?
