Home Page Canonical Question
-
I have an online store through hosting service Volusion. I have asked them about this and was told that this is normal. I would like to confirm this with you guys because I'm not convinced of the quality of their customer service and I'm not an expert.
When I check Analytics the landing page that is visited most often is www....../default.asp and the second most visited is www........./ . These are, of course, both my home page. Volusion has radio button that allows the admin to "enable canonical links", which I have enabled, and they told me that it is normal to see this on google analytics regardless.
When I type in either of those addreses, the homepage comes up as the address that I typed. In other words it doesn't redirect so that it is always the same.
Am I right to be concerned about this?
-
The 301 Redirect in Volusion only works if the page does not exist. Since /default.asp does exist it doesn't redirect. Not sure what to do.
-
To the home page, you must choose a version and make the 301 redirect for just one option. Using canonical, the home relevance is dividing between several pages, even if google knows what the original content. To concentrate the whole relevance of the home, 301 is the best option.
-
Volusion does have the ability to do 301 redirects, so you can set that up to redirect the /default.asp to the / page. I have no experience with Volusion myself, but the following link (and a search on their site for redirects) should get you off on the right foot.
http://support.volusion.com/article/301-redirects
The 301 redirects won't affect your previous GA history, but it will help keep it straight from now on.
Do you have unique page titles for each page? If you can look at landing page by page title that may also help you work around this in an historical sense.
-
Thank you very much, that makes sense now.
-
Let me give you an example:
If there are say 3 copies of your webpage
www.domain.com; www.domain.com/index.php; www.domain.com/home.html
Ideally, you would want everyone to land on the 1st option, so here is what you could do.
Activate canonical for the url #2 and #3, in the rel=canonical tag specify the complete URL for the #1 option. That way, even if Google crawls the #2 and #3 URL, it will know that the URL that should be considered is the #1 URL.
rel=canonical does not redirect the page unlike a 302 or 301 redirection where the page is redirected to the URL you want.
-
Thank you for the quick response. I guess what I'm still not understanding is:
You said, "If you have enabled canonical tag on your URL to redirect the shadow copies of your webpage to 1 location, it should be fine." I am wondering- if the "enable canonical links" feature on my site is working then should I be able to type in www......./ and see www......../ and type in www.......default.asp and see www......default.asp . Shouldn't one of those be redirected so that both show the same address like www...../ for example?
-
If you have enabled canonical tag on your URL to redirect the shadow copies of your webpage to 1 location, it should be fine. In the long run however, you should think about getting a 301 redirect to your homepage URL for the URLs that are shadow copies.

Indexed pages
Just started a site audit and trying to determine the number of pages on a client site and whether there are more pages being indexed than actually exist. I've used four tools and got four very different answers... Google Search Console: 237 indexed pages Google search using site command: 468 results MOZ site crawl: 1013 unique URLs Screaming Frog: 183 page titles, 187 URIs (note this is a free licence, but should cut off at 500) Can anyone shed any light on why they differ so much? And where lies the truth?

My Home Page meta title on Google isn't what it should be
Hey guys My website is http://www.oxfordmeetsfifth.com According to SEOcentro, my website should appear to Google as Fashion Tips for Women | Oxford Meets Fifth. I have used the Yoast plugin and force rewrote titles to ensure that is the home page meta title. It also appears correctly in browser. Could anyone advise why this is the case? Thanks in advance!

When creating parent and child pages should key words be repeated in url and page title?
We are in the direct mail advertising business: PrintLabelAndMail.com Example: Parent:
Technical SEO | | JimDirectMailCoach
Postcard Direct Mail Children:
Postcard Mailings
Postcard Design
Postcard Samples
Postcard Pricing
Postcard Advantages should "postcard" be repeated in the URL and Page Title? and in this example should each of the 5 children link back directly to the parent or would it be better to "daisy chain" them using each as parent for the next?0 -
Canonicals
We have a client that has his products listed on 20+ different websites, including 4 of his own. Also, he only has 1 of everything, so once he sells it then the product is gone. To battle this duplication issue, plus having a short internet lifespan of less than 4 weeks, I was wondering if it would be a good idea to canonical the products back to the category page. Kind of like using canonical tags on your "used blue widget" and "used red widget" pages back to the "used widgets" page. Would this help with the duplicate content issues? Is this a proper use of a canonical?

Should i put a full article on my home page to get google to visit more
Hi, our site is www.in2town.co.uk and i am thinking of putting an article on my home page in the middle under where it says lifestyle news, and getting rid of the middle column and instead have the latest news there to try and get google to visit more. I would like to know if you think this would look messy and not user friendly and if you think if i did do it would it get google to visit the site more often. all day we are always adding articles but on the home page it only shows a few lines of the article so i am concerned that these few lines are not getting google interested in visiting our site more often. we were on page one with our site but now since the upgrade we are on page eight so we are trying to combat this The article would change each time we put a new article on the site. so the article could be on there for ten mins before a new one is there any thoughts on this would be great

Ask a Question
Using SEOmoz for the first time, the initial crawl said we have 9,00 errors which were basically 4,500 duplicate pages and 4,500 dupllicate page titles. (ie http://domainname/etc .html, and http://www.domainmname/etc .html
Technical SEO | | FFTCOUK
We altered our website accordingly by changing all internal links to http://www.domainmname/etc .html as Google and all other rngines are listing us using the www. prefix. On the next crawl we now have even more of these duplicate errors. How d we go about removing them as we only have one file for each on the server. Google has down graded our website in April by 35% and ass this is a retail site we are losing a lot of business. I would very much appreciate it if anyone has the time to amswer. Howard0
