When moving my ecommerce website from one host to another should I also 301 all my image urls?
-
I'm going to be 301'ing a lot of pages, but should i also 301 my image URLS? Any other helpful hints would be awesome too, as this will be my first move online ever. We've been with our host 3 years.
Thanks!

Hi Paul,
301'ing old urls to new urls is enough. Additionally you can add a custom 404 page for the other old urls which may be created becuase of tags, categories etc.

I would love to hear what decision you went with and how it turned out in the data. I moved a large ecommerce site at the beginning of the year and didn't touch any image url's and they never showed up in 404 errors either. I'm guessing the links to our site were not to product images but rather to product pages.
Even though I did it this way, I would love to hear how your's came out.
Thanks!

Excellent question. I wouldn't worry about redirecting images, but you can: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3778347/is-it-ok-to-http-redirect-images

Hi Paul,
We're going through and following up with older questions that are still marked unanswered. Do you have any questions still? Can you share what you did, and any lessons learned so we can have them for the archives for the next time someone's in a similar situation?
Thanks!

Guillaume,
Thanks for the answer. I am basically moving ecommerce platforms to answer your question. I am keep the same domain (www.stbands.com). If you want to get even more specific i am moving from storesonline to corecommerce. Here's some more info:
- All meta tags, URLS, content is virtually going to be the same except my product pages and normal pages will end with .html, however my category pages will still be /categoryname (like a directory).
- My category URLS seem to build in a mod re-write fashion, which I hear is better for SEO (like /sweatbands/head-sweatbands/).
- I have set all my pages to use the rel=cananical tag, so if you are on the category /sweatbands/head-sweatbands/ it cananicals back to /head-sweatbands
- The images are changing names as I upload them on a product because it auto creates new sizes. This differs from our old host and may affect our vertical image rankings. Should I 301 the image URLS?
- I am keeping the www. in my domain name, as opposed to just domain.com to keep everything the same.
- CoreCommerce automatically seems to make my products uppercase in the URL as they are in the title, but the url works both lowercase and uppercase so its not case sensitive.
This is just an overview of some things I think I have most of my bases covered, but i'm aiming for a april 1st launch / move for the new site. Any other pointers / suggestions?

Hi Paul,
When you say that you willl change "host", do you mean web hosting provider, domain name or ecommerce platform? If you meant :
Hosting provider : you shouldn't have to do any 301 redirect as all the Urls will remain the same, only the IP adress of the website will change, but this is not a big deal.
Domain name : If you have a apache server, you could create a .htaccess with single line of code that will redirect any pages or images on the old domain to the new one, without having to create a single 301 for every file.
Ecommerce platform : This one is the hardest one. If you are to switch to a new ecommerce platform, I suggest you try to keep as much as possible the same Url structure as you had if possible as it already looks good.
Depending on the type of move you do, please specify the kind of change you will be doing so we can help you better.
Best regards,
Guillaume Voyer.

Can you help by advising how to stop a URL from referring to another URL on my website with a 404 errorplease?
How to stop a URL from referring to another URL on my site. I'm getting a 404 error on a referred URL which is (https://webwritinglab.com/know-exactly-what-your-ideal-clients-want-in-8-easy-steps/[null id=43484])referred from URL (https://webwritinglab.com/know-exactly-what-your-ideal-clients-want-in-8-easy-steps/) The referred URL is the URL page that I want and I do not need it redirecting to the other URL as that's presenting a 404 error. I have tried saving the permalink in WordPress and recreated the .htaccess file and the problem is still there. Can you advise how to fix this please? Is it a case of removing the redirect? Is this advisable and how do I do that please? Thanks

Website URL, Robots.txt and Google Search Console (www. vs non www.)
Hi MOZ Community,
Technical SEO | | Badiuzz
I would like to request your kind assistance on domain URLs - www. VS non www. Recently, my team have moved to a new website where a 301 Redirection has been done. Original URL : https://www.example.com.my/ (with www.) New URL : https://example.com.my/ (without www.) Our current robots.txt sitemap : https://www.example.com.my/sitemap.xml (with www.)
Our Google Search Console property : https://www.example.com.my/ (with www.) Question:
1. How/Should I standardize these so that Google crawler can effectively crawl my website?
2. Do I have to change back my website URLs to (with www.) or I just need to update my robots.txt?
3. How can I update my Google Search Console property to reflect accordingly (without www.), because I cannot see the options in the dashboard.
4. Is there any to dos such as Canonicalization needed, or should I wait for Google to automatically detect and change it, especially in GSC property? Really appreciate your kind assistance. Thank you,

Another Duplicate Content - eCommerce Question!
We are manufacturers of about 15 products and our website provides information about the products. We also offer them for sale on the site. Recently we partnered with a large eCommerce site that sells many of these types of products. They lifted descriptions from our site for theirs and are now selling our products. They have higher DA than us. Will this cause a ranking problem for us? Should we write unique descriptions for them? Thanks!

Ecommerce filter views, URLs and the SEO implications
Hi, I'm dealing with an ecommerce client who sells furniture. Each category landing page has a menu on the left hand side that allows you filter by colour, material, brand etc. Take the www.example/double-beds page, as an example: if you select 'Wood' from the 'Material' filter, the URL changes to www.example/Category/Browse?PageNumber=&ViewAs=&ObjectEntityKey=1916&PageSize=15&SortBy=&filterOptions=47&filterOptions=47 and all the wooden double beds are displayed. As this new URL contains some of the same products/content as www.example.com/double-beds, where do we stand from an SEO/duplicate content point of view? Are we at risk of a duplicate content slap? Cheers, Lewis

URL Structure
Hi, Hope you are all well. On our website we have a 'blog' and a 'news' section. The blog is located on "/blog" - but when you click on a post the url structure changes to /name-of-article and the blog subdomain isn't included. Would it be better to have "blog/name-of-article as this would then make the blog perform better in search results? Also, if our news page is under /news - but when you click on an article it changes to /news-article/name-of-article Wouldn't it be better to have /news/name-of-article Thanks a lot!! 🙂

Massive Nonsensical 301 on Large ecommerce Site
We are in the process of launching a large ecommerce site, which is a rebuild. Their old URL structure does not make it possible in our eyes to logically map every URL to it's corresponding new page. We have done our best to properly and manually redirect all pages that were receiving any amount of organic traffic and have also covered all pages that had external links. Our question is we will end up with potentially tens of thousands of 404 errors that will never fix themselves. The manual work will need to stop at some point. Would it be better to leave these 404's the way they are and just let them fall out of the index or should we take everything we cannot assign appropriately to a page like the products root or the home page? I'm also open to hearing any suggestions about how others have solved massive nonsensical 301's. Thanks in advance,

URL length - Moving from 6 folder deep to 3 folder deep
I have a website with friendly URL, My product page are generated from a database. When I click on the product, I go 6 folders deep. (ex. nameofthesite/courses-and-seminard/blablabla-catalog/information-technology/blablabla-window/blabla-server/active-directory-with-windows-server-2008.html I'm thinking about moving the product page to the thrid folder, so it would become nameofthesite.com/courses-and-seminars/course-catalog/active-directory-with-windows-server-2008.html I want to know, would it be a major element in my SEO. Is URL length is a really important factor. Because I need to move 450 pages. Second, if I move the page, do I only need to add redirect 301 or I need to do something else. I suppose I also need to change my breadcrumb navigation also.
