Will removing old (3 years+), low quality inbound links potentially improve my rankings?
-
I have a client site with thousands of old very low quality links purchased from directories etc over several years - I am certain these are doing nothing for the current rankings and I advised them to stop buying these links 18 months ago when I first started working with them, but do you think pro-actively getting old poor quality backlinks removed will potentially improve the site's rankings?
-
Don't do it. Very bad idea.
Consern your efforts with buildingt stronger links.
-
If you have better links to subsidise with the same money - go ahead. Otherwise leave them as they are. Link is a link, however if it looks reallys pammy than it's worth going through trouble of removal. If this was my site I would try to avoid a massive link drop and remove gradually.

Hi Simon,
Assuming your client's website has been around for a couple of years or more, these links will have no negative impact. Low quality links won't ever get an aged site penalised - going around and removing them would be hugely time consuming and you're better off focusing on building better quality links instead.
Good luck!
-
Fair enough - the last thing I need is another job on the list
-
No.
The sites in question would have to be in very bad standing to penalise sites they linked too and as these are just directories (or similar) they would have to actually be a recognised link farm to do this.
At worst they're going to be passing no value but can still count as a unique domain link for things like domain authority etc.
I would leave them unless you know they're actually harming you (and if they require monthly payment or similar then you could always just let them die off).
EDIT: On the other hand if you were going to be engaging in 'aggressive' link building and having these would push you over the edge (not that anyone knows where that is) in terms of having a really spammy backlink profile, then maybe.
If you're doing quality link building and getting more natural links, then I'd still leave them
-
True, some links that you can't control/communicate to get removed (scrapers) but at least you try
-
Interesting points. We are currently working on building quality links both with better content on the blog and site, also by pro-actively engaging with bloggers in the client's niche.
Some of the links do look very spammy as the client previously engaged what I'd politely call a questionable SEO firm who just bought a lot of links - this is going back a few years when it probably didn't cause the same penalty it would today, but I suspect some of these links are still hurting them a bit.
I'd love to know if anyone has actually set about removing low quality links as a tactic and seen an improvement in ranking as a result.
-
If the links have keyword rich anchor text, I would ditch them. In general you should only acquire directory links with brand as the anchor text in your link.
-
This is what I'm thinking too, FWIW. Of course, it's hard to remove links from real spammy pages since they are mostly auto-generated
-
Have you done this yourself and are talking from direct experience or is this just a "feeling"? Not bashing you, just curious because some answers like this are too easy to write what everyone assumes rather than real experiences. I'm very interested in this question too - I have a similar situation.
-
You should think more on lines of content creation and better interlinking between your pages and all. Social media is a big power today.
-
I am against this to be honest.
- True these links coming from low quality sites (and they are low quality) but the links have "Age"
- I only go back and remove links, if they look too spammy, or page looks like a link farm.
I would certainely see drop in rankings if these old Links has been removed and not being replaced with good one's
-
Hi Saibose,
Thanks for the quick reply, I'll add it to the job list as a fairly low priority.

You would be better off removing these low quality backlinks, but that would not reflect in rankings right away. Maybe over a period of time with targeted content and engaging people with social media and obtaining good contextual links would help in repairing your link profile.

Missing Inbound Linking Domains
For some reason, our websites seem to be missing a number of authoritative inbound linking domains which seems to be a primary driver in lowering our domain authority as compared to our competition. Does anyone have any feedback as to why this might not be populating or is there something additional we need to do to have these show up? If it doesn't show up in MOZ is it likely that Google might also not be seeing these as inbound link domains? Thanks as always MOZ Community!

Internal Links - First Link Rule Confusion
Hello All - I would like to create a guide for my team of rules for internal links and I could use some help. My understanding is that Google only counts the first link to a page, so any crafted keyword text links within the content do not count if the page in question is linked to from the main navigation. Is this correct? For example, if the menu or drop down menu in main site nav (which exists on all pages of the site) includes a link to a particular section that will be the only one that ever counts since the menu is on every page? Example: let's say a website selling cat toys includes a drop down menu on the homepage with links to "holiday cat toys". Does this mean that no other text links in content on the site will support that page from an SEO perspective since the link is in the main nav and will always be the first one counted? In the past we have added text links in the content on the homepage to important pages on the site. It seems to work, though now I'm questing these tactics based on the first link rule. I would appreciate some advice, clarification, thoughts, etc. Thanks!

Link building strategy - my weak link!
Please help me understand link building. I've read the articles on Moz, but they seem vague to me. Specific questions: 1. How do I get my webpage on good quality sites? 2. Guest blogging? Good or not? 3. What about when people pick up one of our blog stories and publish it on their site with a link back? Is that bad now because it is duplicate content??? 4. Forum posts with a link in the signature? Good or not? 5. Directories - I get it that these are no longer good... are they severely negative? Should I take them down. 6. PR - Looks like this is bad... right??? 7. Youtube - any value? 8. Pinterst, LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram? Any value to backlinks here? 9. What about sites like redit? 10. Anything else I should consider?

Gained my first quality link, was it worth 2 hours of work?
Hello,
Link Building | | wppseo
I'm a newbie. I'm building a brand new site. In a niche service business, worldwide.
Today I gained my first link, I tried to reach to the highest qualify link I could identify.
I'd like to know if you think my two hours effort was worthy, or laughable. Because I can gain other 3 or 4 links from other domains working like that. I tell you where is my first link: the top domain is in the same niche business, DA 79
My link is in a subdomain page (always in the same niche business) that has: 20 other links (mine is the only external dofollow) Domain Authority 79 /100 Page Authority 31 /100 Page Link Metrics Just-Discovered 79 in 32 Days Established Links 1 Root Domain 4 Total Links the homepage of the subdomain has Page Authority of 66 /100 Page Social Metrics 0 0 0 0 0 I'd appreciate any feedback.0 -
Inbound Links - will it benefit?
Hello everyone! Just a quick question about inbound links! I managed to be listed as a guest writer on a blog and I am allowed to publish two articles (maybe more if I had more time to write) on it with one link for each article. The blog has a very good PR compared to my PR2 site. My website is an e-commerce site and I was thinking to build few links pointing to different pages of the site, but because links come from the same domain will it benefit? By the way there is not link exchange or anything, I get a link for the articles I publish. Cheers Oscar

Should I remove links from my internal blog?
I have blogs/news sites on every one of my clients' websites (each representing a different business within the same industry - self storage). On each of these blog sites, I have a writer who places about 3-5 exact keyword match links (varying anchor text) to give interlink juice to the other off-site businesses owned by the client. Each of these blogs receive about five posts per week. I am sure this is mega-over-optimizing and a stupid thing to do considering penguin. So, my questions are: Moving forward - 1. Should i stop adding so many blog articles to each site? 2. How many interlinking anchor texts should I use per blog? 3. Should I go back and either get rid of all those interlinks on past blogs or just trash the blog articles altogether? Please help if you can - I very much appreciate the responses best bd

What is my site missing for improved ranking - Pls Help
Hi I would really appreciate any advice or guidance on what my site needs to move onto the 1st page as I am at a loss on what else is required? On a search for chartered accountants swansea according to the SEOMOZ campaign ranking report the site www.harrisbassett.co.uk is down in 27 position for this keyphrase in Google. However when looking over the ranking analysis my site has a stronger authority, more root domains, more domain authority and linking root domains than 4 out of the top 5 listings. Also the onpage analysis of some of the top 10 results is very poor, with no blogs, social features etc I have been building links based from competitor analysis which should be more than what is shown in the ranking report, but is my site missing any kep ingredients that would propel it up onto the 1st page - as the keyword difficulty is only 25% so I am struggling to work out what key elements/improvements are required for this final push.
