Link Juice flow control
-
Hi,
I'm really interested in a good explanation of how to control the flow of link juice. Most of my inbound links currently go to my home page, and I was just wondering how to maximise the link juice flow to those pages that I want ranking.
- Is there any benefit to nofollowing pages in my navigation that I don't need to rank?
- As above, but with links in my footer, such as privacy policy and the like (can i not waste link juice on these pages?)
- Does more link juice flow to pages higher up in my code?
These are just some of the questions I'm concerned with. Basically, I'd really like to know the best-practices for sending link juice to where it is needed most.
Thanks,

No, nav and footer links do not suck juice that you could otherwise redirect somewhere else via 'nofollow'.
Yes, juice is split evenly between all outgoing links on a page. So if you reduce the number of links (by deleting them, not just making them 'nofollow') then you can increase the juice passed to the remaining links on the page. This is why it's rarely a good idea to have a page with tons of links on it; each one is going to only pass a little bit of juice.
Having said that, nav and footer links can be very helpful for the humans who visit your site, so you don't want to strip them all away and make your site hard to use. But If you have dozens of barely-useful links jammed into your footer then you should probably nuke those.
Design your site for humans. And trust that Google will do something reasonable with the link juice flowing around your site.

OK, to tighten up the question a bit after having read the articles:
-
Do nav and footer links 'suck' link juice? (this may seem a stupid question, I just want to be sure)
-
Is link juice split evenly between links on a page?
Thanks,
Matt

It used to be possible to use nofollow to redirect more juice to where you wanted it. But Google changed the algo so now that's not the case. See Rand's excellent pieces on it here: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/google-maybe-changes-how-the-pagerank-algorithm-handles-nofollow and http://www.seomoz.org/blog/google-says-yes-you-can-still-sculpt-pagerank-no-you-cant-do-it-with-nofollow

Are bad links the reason for not ranking?
Hello Moz community. I'm looking here for some input from the experts on what could be wrong with a site I'm working on. The site is in Spanish, but I'm sure you'll get the idea. We want to rank the site first page on Google Mexico (www.google.com.mx) for the keyword "refacciones Audi" and some other brands (refacciones = replacement parts would probably be a good translation, just FYI). Now, our page hasn't been completely optimized, so in my mind it's OK not to be on first page yet. However, our main competitor is ranking first page for all the keywords we want to rank for, but when you check their site, you'll find there is hardly any content, no keywords are being used in their content, all pages have the exact same title and meta description, their catalog is in a completely different domain. In short, no SEO whatsoever. Looking at Moz data, our site has a DA of 26, while our competitor's has a 10. They have no external backlinks at all, while we have a few hundred. This leaves me scratching my head: how can a completely non-optimized site outrank us? I decided to check our backlink profile, and a previous SEO agency seems to have built MANY fake blogs with lots of backlinks with rich anchor text. Quite a big percentage of our backlinks are of this kind, so this is the only thing I can think can be affecting our ranking. Will disavowing be our solution? If you'd like to check, our site is: www.refaccionariaalemana.com.mx Our competitors' is: www.saferefacciones.com ANY help will be extremely appreciated as I feel a bit lost. Thanks!

Ecommerce website with too many links on page
Hi, I'm working on onsite seo for an ecommerce website and my recent report has shown that I have a high number of pages where there are 'too many links on page'. Does anyone have tips on how to avoid this when we're using mega menus, plenty of navigation for the user and links to products on each page? Thanks

OSE - still showing me links are there when they are not?
Has anyone else had the issue for a couple of months now where ose is showing links that are live when they are not. I am doing seo for a big e-commerce website so it is important i can find out what the anchor text distribution is for the domain. How is this possible when ose shows me links which are not live? There's been 2 or 3 updates and still showing expired links in our back-link profile. This is very frustrating and has led me to see if anyone else can recommend an alternative which is more up to date? And yes before seomoz reply, i know you only update a certain percentage of the web.

Too many links on my site
Hi there everybody, I am a total SEO newbie and i am burning with questions. I had my site crawled and found out that it contains too many links. The reason is that it is a site where I constantly write news and articles and each one of them is a new Joomla item, thus a new link. I actually thought lots of content is good for SEO. How am I supposed to reduce the link amount?
