External Domain for Company Blog
-
Please help me decide the benefit (from an SEO perspective) of hosting a company blog externally (either on blogger or self-setup external domain) or hosting on company's website.
-
It depends on the purpose of your blog. I recommend on a separate domain if you want to gain shelf space or for reputation management purposes.if you have a site that already has great domain authority and high PageRank, you could use the blog separately to have value on two different domains. However, if your site is fairly new, i recommend to host it within your company's website as Lewis and Barry say, to use those links and help your main domain.
-
Definitely host it on the company website, unless you're doing something risqué with the blog.
Your blog is going to be collecting links, you will probably want to be using it as a hub for other social activity and it's much easier to convert people by directing them around the site than it is to get them to go there in the first place.
Using Blogger or WordPress.com limits a lot of what you can do, plus you're then accumulating links into a domain you don't control.
As for using the blog to point links to your main site, well that's not usually the best strategy either - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/whiteboard-friday-the-microsite-mistake
If your set up absolutely prevents you from doing it on the site then go for a self-hosted blog.

If you use an external domain you can potentially choose a keyword match domain which may be beneficial (if it hasn't already been taken by someone else).
However I would recommend hosting your blog on your main site at www.example.com/blog. Any links achieved by the blog will also benefit the rest of the pages on the main site domain whereas any links to a separate blog will only benefit the ranking of the blog.

Blog.site.com vs site.com/blog
Which is better for SEO: blog.site.com or site.com/blog. In other words, is it better to have the blog running in a subdomain or as a director within the main site? Right now we are running as a subdomain, but want to be sure Google isn't considering that a separate site. The blog shows up separately on Google Analytics, which makes me think site.com/blog is better if for no other reason, it would give our domain greater traffic. Not sure if this matters, but some site info: our site is a sharing economy tool for renting your stuff we are running the blog on Wordpress blog traffic is about 5% of total traffic

How long should a quality blog post be?
How long should a "quality" blog post be? General advice seems to be that a 300 word post just won't cut it, but advice on the optimum length is vague. I appreciate that all posts are different but is there a rule of thumb, is 1000 words good and 1500 too long...or should they are all aim to be 2000 words? Also with regards to pictures in blogs, can they just be taken from the web or are there sites that I should be using to source the pictures? Thanks

Typepad.com blog migration & duplicate content
I've migrated a typepad.com blog with a bunch of content (but little traffic) onto a hosted WordPress site under my own domain name (the way I should've done it in the first place). Now I don't want to confuse Google that the new site is duplicating content from the other site, so would I be better off with: 1) meta-refresh redirecting each typepad.com post to the same post on the new blog, or 2) just killing the typepad.com blog entirely so Google will not find duplicate posts anywhere. In favor of #2 is the fact that these posts get very little traffic today. I figure I will lose more traffic from duplicate content ranking penalties than from losing the posts themselves in the original blog. What do you think?

Best way to get my Blog traffic
I've recently began blogging on my site. The content is all unique and useful and written properly without keyword stuffing... My question is, how do i go about getting people to see the blog (getting traffic to it) so that it can get linked to. I've created content that i believe people will naturally link to, the only problem is they're not finding my blog. Any advice on how to get my blog out into the world?! thanks
