I have a SERP result thats started returning a dud URL all of a sudden, any ideas why?
-
SERP "French Furniture" in google.co.uk
The URL thats started to be returned P7 is
<cite>www.thefurnituremarket.co.uk/ categories.asp?cat=</cite>
The meta description is relevant however our CMS system 'ecommerce templates' has some code in it to return a dynamic meta description dependant on what catergory is being searched.
It seems that the meta description is being populated from our french furniture category but the URL is not dynamic..
This has only started happening this past week.
usually the url http://www.thefurnituremarket.co.uk/french_furniture.asp is returned.
in WMT is is nicely indexing with 5 links... on it's own...
Any ideas?

It would be great if you kept this thread going

Hi Robert,
I'm going through older questions that are marked unanswered and wondering how you're doing with this issue. Did you get it resolved or are you still looking for some input?
-
Over night the url has started indexing correctly again.. /french_fucrniture.asp but we have slipped to P10 for this.. Not sure if this is some kind of panda/farmer impact..
-
It seems there are a few more in there than the last time I checked.
We have 9 now...
amp%3Bamp%3Bcat= let google decide
amp%3Bamp%3Bamp%3Bcat= let google decide
amp%3Bcat= let google decide
id = dont ignore
cat= dont ignore (is this the one I should switch to 'let google decide'?)
amp%3Bpg = dont ignore
'&pg=' = Ignore
prod = Dont ignore
Does this add any extra information I should look at?

Hard to say without looking at it. Are you able to log into GWT and give me a list of all the recognised parameters and what Google suggest to do with each. If too many perhaps create a screenshot.
-
... go on...
-
Hmm... parameters. I wonder if you can do something in GWT to set the parameters in your favour...
-
I hear what you are saying Dejan,
issues with that are.
-
I built static pages for this page "/french_furniture.asp" and added the usual rel="canonical" tags, I can't do 301's so unfortunately this page is running along side /categories.asp?cat=French+Furniture which is the dynamic category page.
-
We are ranking well for French Furniture SERP's so I am a bit loathed to tinker with this too much.
-
in XML site maps I have set /french_furniture.asp as a higher priority (0.9) than other french furniture pages.
-
in WMT the french category is indexed well with 5 sub links...
The bottom line is that the Current URL sucks so bad I am worried about the bounce rates hurting us, and that is not the page I want people to see.
There are a number of complex parameters in play here... Its a little beyond me at this point in time.

-
This site runs on .asp and we have been using front page extensions..
The stock answer we have had is we can gain access to the .htaccess files but WHEN you break it it will cost you.
-
I have no idea how Google bumped into that but it's easy to remove it by applying noindex in meta (you can do it as I have seen examples of this tag on other pages).
Another problem... look how many French furniture pages you have:
Perhaps decide which one will be your main page and ensure it earns a few links and you should be fine

Even though I cannot point you to a specific UK host that does, I'm absolutely certain there are dozens of hosts that have their platform set up correctly. Using the .htaccess file is a truly normal activity that pretty much every host I've ever used (Linux only, not Windows as .htaccess is not available there) has allowed me to do.
Are you sure you're asking the right questions to a potential new host?
-
Sadly 301's and nofollows are not an option as our host won't enetertain the idea of tinkering with the .htaccess file, and I can't find a host in the UK who is willing to get involved in this either.
-
should use nofollow in .htaccess

How do I customize Magento product urls?
I would like my product urls to be /category/manufacturer/name/part#. This would be the only url the item uses and how the product is accessed. It would also be used for product feeds. My first attempt was to use https://amasty.com/magento-unique-product-url.html This creates a single url but I can not customize it. Sometimes it selects the manufacturer and sometimes the category. My second attempt was with https://www.magentocommerce.com/magento-connect/custom-product-urls-seo.html I have it installed but it doesn't change the urls. Has anyone been able to do this successfully?

Localizing URLs Path - Hreflang
Hello, This is a simple question regarding how URLs should be managed for proper results with the hreflang tags. Right now, we have a website in English and German. The hreflang tag is working properly. This is how we currently have it: https://www.memoq.com/ https://de.memoq.com/ But we will soon change the way we localize our web, moving out of the sub-domain structure. There is this possibility of localizing the URLs path, but I was wondering if the hreflang tag would work in such case. The new structure would look something like: https://www.memoq.com/why-memoq https://www.memoq.com/de/warum-memoQ So my question is: If we localize the keyword in the path of the URL, will the tag still work? Or do they need to be in the same language than the English version. Thanks!

Shortening URL's
Hello again Mozzers, I am debating what could be a fairly drastic change to the company website and I would appreciate your thoughts. The URL structure is currently as follows Product Pages

www.url.co.uk/product.html Category Pages
www.url.co.uk/products/category/subcategory.html I am debating removing the /products/ section as i feel it doesn't really add much and lengthens the url with a pointless word. This does mean however redirecting about 50-60 pages on the website, is this worth it? Would it do more damage than good? Am i just being a bit OCD and it wont really have an impact? As always, thanks for the input0 -

Why are my URL's changing
My rankings suddenly dropped and when trying to understand why I realized that nearly all images in Google's cached version of my site were missing. In the actual site they appear but in the cached version they don't. I noticed that most of the images had a ?6b5830 at the end of the URL and these were the images that were not showing. I am hoping that I found the reason for the drop in rankings. Maybe since Google cannot see a lot of the content it decided not to rank it as well (particularly since it seems to happen on thousands of pages). This is a cached version of my site I am using the following plugins that might be causing it: Yoasts SEO plugin, W3 total cache. Does anyone know what is causing ?6b5830 to be added to the end of most of my URL's? Could this be the reason for the ranking drop? Thanks in advance!

Order of keyword usage in URL
Hi, I have been wondering for a few weeks if the order of keyword usage for a long tail keyword made a difference. Today I ran an on-page report here for a new page which is a review of a product. The report warned about the keyword usage in URL which made me question my knowledge about this. let's say the page is titled Razer Mouse Review my URL is www.example.com/review/razer-mouse I thought it was a bad idea to repeat the same word in a URL, that's why I categorized all my reviews under review directory and avoided using the word "review" more than once. Should I modify this url and make it www.example.com/review/razer-mouse-review Note: I see the report listed this under "moderate importance factors" and still gave the page A grade. any ideas appreciated!

301 an old URL with a ? in the URL?
I am redoing a site and the URL's are changing structure. The client's site was in magento and in the store they would get two URLs, for example: /store/categoryname/productname and /store/categoryname/productname?SID=dslkajsfdoiu947598whouieht983hg98 Do I have to 301 redirect both of these URL's to their new counterpart? Both go to the same content but magento seemed to add these SIDs into the navigation and Google has both versions in the index.
