I have a great idea for a contest that will generate links...but how do I promote it when I have little traffic?

I'm working on a new real estate site and I've got some great ideas to generate links. One of these ideas is a pretty neat contest. (I'd tell you what it is, but really...this is one of those ideas where people will go, 'Man! I wish I thought of that', so I want to do it first before anyone else steals my idea.
)The contest involves readers submitting photos and other readers voting on them. I anticipate it will generate some good press both locally and internationally if I can get enough submissions. But, the question is, how do I get contest submissions when I don't have good traffic yet?
Once I've got some good submissions, I'll contact some media, spread it amongst my personal fb friends, etc.
Any ideas are welcomed!

You might be trying to go too general with it... figure out who you're targeting first then tailor the content to them.

Some great answers here, I'd add that there are numerous websites around the web to advertise your competition, some offer paid advertising, others free. Most offer a follow link. There are quite a lot of low quality sites, which I'd avoid, check their mozTrust etc prior to submitting your competition.
I've found twitter a great medium for promoting competitions in the past. Choose a unique, related hashtags and tweet about it regularly.

Building on @EGOL suggestions agree it is important to get the tone set from the beginning. To this end there is nothing wrong with soliciting the help of your own network early on...you can cajol them into providing good entries to start with. Once you have some good content you can look at some tactical local PR, local newspapers and websites.
How you actually execute it is also going to be important, making it very easy to pass along. I'm personally bullish on FB powered commenting. Again getting your network to start interacting with the content this way will help socialize it on FB.
FB advertising may also be a good way to seed the comp.

Its not aonly a good way to get links, its a good reson to ask people to link to you. find relevant sites and ask if they will link to you.

Use Digg, StumbleUpon, etc... to promote the contest. As long as it's done well you'll get some traffic and submissions... there's bound to be some well targeted platforms for it too. -
I would go straight to other webmasters - especially if they have a local blog that might cover your contest or sell you a banner ad.

I like the idea of prizes for the first ten entries that meet our specifications. That's good!
Regarding the advertising...are you thinking Adwords? Or approaching local webmasters to purchase ad space?

Give nice prizes for the first ten entries that meet your rigorous specifications.... The first entries will set the tone for those that follow. You want to start with some kickass stuff and not a bunch of slackers.
Advertise these as a "mystery contest" on local websites (use local websites because those people are already online and can click straight away to your site,)
Be friendly and encouraging but let them know that you expect good stuff.

Link Building on a small budget
Hi Folks I'm looking for recommendations from the community that can help me tic the requirements below; Looking for link-building services for a small start up. Prefer to work directly with the person doing the work. How much link juice could be passed?
When evaluating a site to decide whether or not to peruse a link, how do you decide if it is passing enough link juice to peruse the matter?

Linking across categories
On a website when I link across in the same category should all the categories all pear on each page. Let's say I have 6 categories and 6 pages should I have the 6 links on all the pages ( such as A, B, C, D, E, on page 1 ( let's imagine this page is page F ), then on page A have link B, C D, E, F and so on for the 6 pages ( meaning all the links appear on all the pages across the category ) or should i just have let's say 3 links on page 1 ( link A, B, C ) , then link ( D, E, F ) on page 2, then A, E, F on page 3, link B, C F on page 4 and so on... ( which means that i vary the links that appear and that it is naturally ( at least I think ) going to boost the link that appears the most of the 6 pages ? Links to Facebook pages
I would like to ask if anyone has any knowledge regarding linking to a company's facebook page. I have built a few links to a client's facebook page in an effort to have it rank better in SERPs. I just learned that unlike twitter and linkedin, it is apparently not possibly to directly link to facebook pages. At least it is not possible from a search engine's perspective. If you follow any facebook page link while you are not logged into facebook, you are redirected to the facebook home page. I can't think of any way around this obstacle. I'd love some clever solution such as providing a URL which includes a basic dummy facebook login but there is nothing I am aware of to achieve this result. Does anyone have any ideas on this topic?

Competitors and Directory Links
Hi guys, wanted to get some input and thoughts here. I'm analyzing many competitor links for a specific client (even other clients actually as well) and come across a pretty heavy directory backlink profiles. has anyone here had success with directory listings? Seem many of the competitors backlinks are coming from directories. What say you?

First Link Priority question - image/logo in header links to homepage
I have not found a clear answer to this particular aspect of the "first link priority" discussion, so wanted to ask here. Noble Samurai (makers of Market Samurai seo software) just posted a video discussing this topic and referencing specifically a use case example where when you disable all the css and view the page the way google sees it, many times companies use an image/logo in their header which links to their homepage. In my case, if you visit our site you can see the logo linking back to the homepage, which is present on every page within the site. When you disable the styling and view the site in a linear path, the logo is the first link. I'd love for our first link to our homepage include a primary keyword phrase anchor text. Noble Samurai (presumably seo experts) posted a video explaining this specifically http://www.noblesamurai.com/blog/market-samurai/website-optimization-first-link-priority-2306 and their suggested code implementations to "fix" it http://www.noblesamurai.com/first-link-priority-templates which use CSS and/or javascript to alter the way it is presented to the spiders. My web developer referred me to google's webmaster central: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=66353 where they seem to indicate that this would be attempting to hide text / links. Is this a good or bad thing to do?
