Do any of you regularly use expired domains?

I know there has been discussion on using expired domains in the past. This is not so much a question as to how to do it or whether it works, but rather I would love to see how many of you use this in your backlink strategy.
I have a domain in a low to moderately competitive niche that ranks really well, mostly on the power of a couple of expired domains. I bought the domains, created a quick wordpress site and pointed some anchor texted links to the site. It took some time for the expired domains to regain their PR, but when they did, the benefit was great.
I'm considering whether I want to do this with another domain of mine. On one hand, it's a relatively inexpensive way to get some good quality anchor texted links. But, on the other hand, something in it feels "immoral" or "sneaky" to me.
What do you think?

I wouldn't call it unethical unless you made a habit of it with loads of sites, all providing no value. It's never worth focusing on micro-sites, but if there's a couple there, might as well use them

Yeah I'm totally with you on that, I wouldn't bother buying a bunch of domains to build sites with, all to link in... Google will know anyway, it'll spot a footprint one way or another. I'm just thinking for the sake of not wasting an already owned domain... would hate to think of it sat there doing nothing when it could be doing something, even if that something is tiny lol.

Yeah, sorry too. Ethically, I would say it's gray hat on a small scale, and black hat on larger scale. Of course, that's completely subjective. But I say this because, the main purpose of the secondary site's existence would be, in fact, to 'trick' search engines.
Just my opinion. I also can understand Steve's point of view. -
Thanks Donnie...sorry that this convo is getting confusing (as I replied below as well). My question was more about the ethics of using this tactic rather than how to do it.

If the site's are relevant for the niche, I may consider 301 redirecting page by page to the primary niche..... or instead, you could just link them over as you're doing. Would it be possible to contact the inbound linking domains, and ask them to link to your primary site instead?
If the niches are all relevant, I would build pages on the primary site to reflect the secondary site's content. Then redirect page by page. Then contact the linking domains and ask them to update their links.

The PR seems to come back after a couple of months. Some are relevant to my niche and some are not. But, as stated in the question, the question was not so much about whether or not this tactic works, but rather, whether Mozzers are using it. I don't want to do anything immoral or unethical.

Are they currently existing?
Did the DNS info reset to your contact info after you bought them? If so, the PR may get reset as well.
Are the sites relevant to the primary site's niche? -
The domains that I bought have existing links and PR. It took some time for the PR to come back, but in the ones I have used so far they seem to be helping.

Hey Steve, thanks. I see what you mean, and can't disagree with your thinking... I personally would prefer to spend that hour (or so) trying to get a link to the primary site. But I can understand why others would rather just create one.
We're both assuming that someone would use different hosts, right?
I'm also curious to know, where would you 'draw the line' so-to-speak?
I mean, domain names are only about $10 each, so you could 5, 10, 100. etc. At some point, you would be building an 'unnatural' link profile, and begin to raise flags. And me being a skeptic, I tend to lean towards as natural of link profiles as possible. -
I may not have explained myself completely. These are domains that I bought that have incoming links and PR.
They definitely did help my first site really well.

Ah yeah I don't believe in micro/satellite sites, etc... but even with zero incoming links, as long as the domain is indexed it still has some value to pass no matter how small.
It's not about building micro-sites though, it's just plopping something on a domain and getting a link off it, I'm not suggesting link wheels, or putting SEO time and effort into the other domains, just using them as you have them.
Existing domain + template site + 10 mins of writing content and slapping a couple of images on, submit a sitemap and wallah... 20 minutes and you've got a link off a homepage of a relevant content site that admittedly is low value and on the same server but it's half an hour, and you never know... the site could grow naturally into being trusted, etc... by itself, including with age.
With the speed you could knock it up, and at no cost, I just think sure why not... it can't pass zero value unless it's not indexed or the link is nofollow. Value will be tiny but could grow with no work based on just age of domain.

However, I don't think they would pass **any **value, due to a lack of inbound links. And, if they began getting inbound links, I believe the efforts spent would have a larger payoff, if the primary site were getting those new links instead.
I'm also kindof a skeptic in SEO... what I mean is, I try not to ever do anything with the primary goal being to deceive search engines. The time invested in building those micro sites, I think would be better spent engaging in building brand recognition (brand queries, natural links, social, etc.)

If you already own it and it's not costing you anything, why not?! Better than having a domain sitting around and doing nothing. As Donnie said, if it's hosted in the same place then the links won't pass much value, but not much is still "some"... and some is better than none
I'd do it, just for the sake of it, it won't hurt as long as there's nothing spammy about it.

I doubt you'r adding much value, as those links would have very low (or non existent) domain/ page authority. Plus, if your hosting them all on the same C Block IP Address, they'd likely be discounted even further.

Use of "/" and using fractions in titles
We are a company that sells pipe and fittings. An example of a part that someone will search for is : 3/4" PVC Socket I am not sure how best to represent the fraction in the title of the page that has such a product. I am concerned that if I use the forward slash it will be misinterpreted by search engines (although it will be interpreted properly by users). A lot of folk search for the product by the fraction size and so it would be good to be able to represent it in the title, but I don't want to get "punished" by confusing search engines. I could replace the forward slash with a hyphen or pipe symbol, but then may look a bit weird to our users... Any recommendations? Bob

Can cross domain canonicals help with international SEO when using ccTLDs?
Hello. My question is:** Can cross domain canonicals help with international SEO when using ccTLDs and a gTLD - and the gTLD is much more authoritative to begin with? ** I appreciate this is a very nuanced subject so below is a detailed explanation of my current approach, problem, and proposed solutions I am considering testing. Thanks for the taking the time to read this far! The Current setup Multiple ccTLD such as mysite.com (US), mysite.fr (FR), mysite.de (DE). Each TLD can have multiple languages - indeed each site has content in English as well as the native language. So mysite.fr (defaults to french) and mysite.fr/en-fr is the same page but in English. Mysite.com is an older and more established domain with existing organic traffic. Each language variant of each domain has a sitemap that is individually submitted to Google Search Console and is linked from the of each page. So: mysite.fr/a-propos (about us) links to mysite.com/sitemap.xml that contains URL blocks for every page of the ccTLD that exists in French. Each of these URL blocks contains hreflang info for that content on every ccTLD in every language (en-us, en-fr, de-de, en-de etc) mysite.fr/en-fr/about-us links to mysite.com/en-fr/sitemap.xml that contains URL blocks for every page of the ccTLD that exists in English. Each of these URL blocks contains hreflang info for that content on every ccTLD in every language (en-us, en-fr, de-de, en-de etc). There is more English content on the site as a whole so the English version of the sitemap is always bigger at the moment. Every page on every site has two lists of links in the footer. The first list is of links to every other ccTLD available so a user can easily switch between the French site and the German site if they should want to. Where possible this links directly to the corresponding piece of content on the alternative ccTLD, where it isn’t possible it just links to the homepage. The second list of links is essentially just links to the same piece of content in the other languages available on that domain. Mysite.com has its international targeting in Google Search console set to the US. The problems The biggest problem is that we didn’t consider properly how we would need to start from scratch with each new ccTLD so although each domain has a reasonable amount of content they only receive a tiny proportion of the traffic that mysite.com achieves. Presumably this is because of a standing start with regards to domain authority. The second problem is that, despite hreflang, mysite.com still outranks the other ccTLDs for brand name keywords. I guess this is understandable given the mismatch of DA. This is based on looking at search results via the Google AdWords Ad Preview tool and changing language, location, and domain. Solutions So the first solution is probably the most obvious and that is to move all the ccTLDs into a subfolder structure on the mysite.com site structure and 301 all the old ccTLD links. This isn’t really an ideal solution for a number of reasons, so I’m trying to explore some alternative possible routes to explore that might help the situation. The first thing that came to mind was to use cross-domain canonicals: Essentially this would be creating locale specific subfolders on mysite.com and duplicating the ccTLD sites in there, but using a cross-domain canonical to tell Google to index the ccTLD url instead of the locale-subfolder url. For example: mysite.com/fr-fr has a canonical of mysite.fr

The alternative that came to my mind was to do essentially the same thing but use a 301 to redirect from mysite.com/fr-fr to mysite.fr. Redirecting main www. subdomain to new domain. Can you then create a new subdomain on the old domain?
Hi there, The scenario is this: We have been working on a rebrand and have changed the company name So, we want to redirect www.old-name.com to www.new-name.com However, the parent company is retaining the old brand name for corporate purposes So, in an ideal world, we'd be able to keep www.old-name.com active - but clearly that would sacrifice all of the authority built up over the years, so we do have to redirect the main www. subdomain in it's entirity. However - one suggested solution is to redirect www.old-domain.com to www.new-domain.com... but then create a new corporate subdomain: for example, business.old-domain.com business.old-domain.com will not be competing with the new site on any service/product related terms; it will only need to appear in SERPs for the company name I'd appreciate some thoughts on this, as I've not done this before or found any examples of anyone that has. Is that a massive risk in terms of sending a confusing message to Google? Thanks for your help

My main site is www.isacleanse.com.au (Obviously targeted to Australian Market) and also www.isacleanse.co.nz targeted to NZ. The main Keywords im targeting are 'Isagenix' for both and also Isagenix Australia, Isagenix Perth, Sydney (Australian cities) and Isagenix NZ, Isagenix New Zealand, Isagenix Auckland etc.. for NZ The Australian site gets a lot more traffic and Australian market gets a lot more searches - I also have a section www.isacleanse.com.au/isagenix-new-zealand/ on the Australian site. The question is am I best off redirrecting the .co.nz domain completley to the Australian Domain to give it extra SEO Juice?0 -
Mass 301 redirect from a sub-domain - using Joomla or htaccess
How is best to mass redirect old domains - Listing the URL's in htaccess? We are looking to use Joomla as a CMS - transferring a blog from a sub-domain to the main site and want to 301 all the sub domain blog posts - any ideas?

A question of rankings (with actual domains)
Working with the main site featured in this Open Site Explorer comparison (you'll need a pro account to view this), and have been for quite some time. Recently we've slid behind Ebay (huge brand, I get it), but the other competitors don't really make sense to me. Main phrase is pontoon boats, and maybe I'm too close to this, but we seem to be in the best shape overall in terms of the domain, the page itself, and even our social media is pretty successful (we're closing in on 5,000 likes and have a pretty engaged audience). More internal linking is an opportunity, but I'd like another set of eyes (or several for that matter) to weigh in on opinions. I'm a bit stumped. Thanks Mozzers!

Domain Issue
Starting a new local travel guide site. Would like to buy a domain and have found one with decent Domain Authority and Trust, but they want $2500 for the domain which I feel is a bit steep since I will be not using any of the content and it is generating hardly any revenue now. . I would rather not start from scratch with no links and no trust. I have a few questions.... -Any suggestions on sites to look for domains or strategy for finding and offering to buy? Any guidelines on how to value domains? If I but it and change registration do I risk losing all the value? Cold I just change technical contact info? Any other suggestions are welcome. Thanks.
