Charity / Donation - Website and SEO
-
I have a prospective client looking to do SEO- they are a charity and have a fixed one time budget. (The budget is surprisingly high) They are looking to have their site ranked for "charities in (our city)" and "dental charities" and any keyword variations. Adwords shows significant search volume and ranking difficulty is moderate per SEOmoz keyword difficulty tool. On page will be fairly simple and well handled, but am looking more towards the authority and link building.
I am going to tackle 3 top quality directories, Yahoo, BOTW, and Business.com (as well as DMOZ but i've never had luck). But was wondering if there were any other nationally recognized sources that mozzers know about that would be a good place to start to get some links to the site. The organization is a clinic that provides free dental work to veterans.
I have never handled SEO for a charity before, and my first instinct is that getting a link to the site will be much easier to get than if I ask them to give money to the foundation, so they would be glad to do it. Any other guidance would be appreciated. And I can give more details if necessary.
Any other tips and insight would be appreciated.
Thank you!
Ian

Lots of universities have a veterans association or a page where veterans benefits are posted. You can try queries like this one for Stanford to identify potential link pages.

EGOL-
Thank you for your awesome input. Didn't realize I was sitting on that...you are awesome!

Would love a .edu for this one.
West Point and all of the other military academies.... Go for the ALUMNI pages.

"The organization is a clinic that provides free dental work to veterans."
You are sitting on a link gold mine!
I would get out there asking for links from any organization who might be a beneficiary. You could get links from a wide variety of ....
.mil domains
.gov domains
.org domains
veterans groups - every legion and amvets group on the planet should jump their webmaster to get a link up for you.
every dentist who has vet patients who would like some help should have a link up to you.
duh... I could go on and on but you get the idea... any group associated with veterans should be linking to you

Thank you both! I will definitely use to connections that they have already to get those sites and associates to point a link to the site. They also do the clinic work on campus so I'm sure the university will provide a link with the right leverage. Would love a .edu for this one. Thanks guys!

Is it dental related? See if you can find a few dental schools that would link to the charity with the right anchor text. Lisa is on the money, start with board members that are alumni.
Do they do any fundraisers? Anything interesting or fun? Talk about it and find places to talk about it for you. News loves heart-warming 'fluff' pieces even on the web.
Thought about an infographic? May not get anchor text value, but it could get some good in-bound juice.
Are they a big authority on anything? Do they have a weekly newsletter etc..? publish that to Issuu.com and slideshare.com
Have you looked at comprable charities across the nation? maybe some good links buried in their profiles.

Hi, Ian-
Additional Ideas:
Write a press release & distribute it.
http://www.thecharitydirectory.org/ & other "Charity" directories
Social Media - Use social media to help get the word out about your cause. Use iFrames to setup a nice Facebook page that goes to your donation form.
Leverage the Board's relationships. For example, are any of them members of ADA, dentists at a clinic, alumni, etc.
Get do-follow social bookmarking links.
Create a nice looking logo with well-optimized anchor text, attributes, etc and ask for links.
Good luck!!

How can a high authority website get away with this?
I found out a website i manage recently lost a link from Business Insider - DA 90+ ... after losing this link my DA dropped 5 points! I read the article and it is absolute GIBBERISH. the link that replaced my link actually links to a site that contains pornographic ads (jumbotrons.net). link: https://www.businessinsider.com.au/ninth-circuit-gay-marriage-quote-2012-12 my questions: 1. how would a company this reputable with a DA 90+ be building pages like this without major penalties? (i realize it is from .au (australia) but from research they own that site too) 2. how exactly does this work? are they selling links to people? did my competitor pay them to replace my link with theirs? why create a page that sounds like robots wrote it 3. would it be a good idea for me to try to get the link back? it certainly was helping considering i lost 5 DA points when i lost the link, but it goes against everything that makes sense in what i've read about toxic links and keeping things clean Curious to learn a little more about these dark arts!!!

Large natural products website owns education website. Should relationship be disclosed?
Hello All - I'm working on a content strategy for a large natural products company. In general it's difficult for articles about the natural products industry written written on commercial company sites to show up in the SERP. Most of the results come from large educational sites and blogs with no obvious affiliation (or products for sale). This company also owns an educational site - one that would be much easier to get content on the first page of the SERP for. The 2 sites are hosted on the same server. My question is - does this website relationship look fishy? Is it a grey area to create content for the educational site - content where the purpose is #1 education, but #2 - to promote products from the main site and send traffic to the main site. I do think it's important to note that the main company site does not actual sell any products there (products are sold on Amazon and on shelves in stores). I appreciate your thoughts!

When/ What Links to Disavow?
We have an older website started in 2000. We have thousands of backlinks which we believe are hurting us. Starting with Panda our site has been devastated, traffic wise, from a million + page views a month to 1/3 of that now. We've never solicited links, never paid for them, they just happened. It seems every "search engine" and spammy site on the web has links to us. Hundreds if not thousands from sites like , 29searchengines.com, 55 searchengines.net, and on and on.. 1. How does a site know when the links are harmful?

Negative SEO
It looks like either opensiteexplorer is broken or two of our domains are being spammed via negative seo with very low quality links:
Link Building | | Beatbuster
http://winter.bergleben.at is a project pretty new in development. Last time I checked we had 39 linking root domains. Now - couple of weeks later - we have more than 800 linking root domains. Most of them very dubious ones. Problem is: the link anchors look correct of what we or a user would typically link to most of the URLs identified by OSE I cannot even find a link back to us on there If it weren`t for the correct link anchors I would consider something wrong with OSE.
Another URL affected is www.skiinfo.de We are very proud of our quality and organic approach to editorial journalism, but we are in a very competitive field, so I would not be surprised if someone would apply negative SEO against us. Can someone briefly look into it and tell me if they came up with the same issue?0
