So I am my coworker have a differing opinion on social networking sites.

One of us says to join one or two, Linkedin being one of them and just work those. The other says to build profiles on multiple pages - everything from Merchant Circle to fastpitch , essentially any and all, and not worry about activity level, just get the link. What are your thoughts? Which approve will result in more effective optimization for clients?

Hi Brenan,
Social is worthless if it is not, well, Social!
The most important facet of using social media is building authority and/or recognition in your space. This kind of authority brings a raft of benefits, not the least of which is the fact that people will want to share what you share...
At a minimum I would pick the two that "work" best for the individual (or company they represent), and start participating in those in a meaningful way. If that works out, then try adding another and see if it also works for you. How many you can realistically manage to make a real contribution to will become clear over time.
My personal view is that a profile that looks like it has been deserted is more likely to do harm to your reputation than good.
Cyrus talked about managing profiles as part of a link building strategy in a blog post just last night. There is also some discussion relevant to your question in the comments on that post. Of course, there are some directories in the SEOmoz resource list that fill the bill for your co-worker too
In short, give yourself a big thumbs up on this one and send your co-worker a link to the post as well!

I would recommend the middle road. Grab all social networking IDs related to your site. Grab the id's for facebook, twitter, linkedin, stumbleupon, digg and all other popular social networks with your brand or site name. The reason is simple. You want to control those names and not allow someone else to do such. If you think "well, I don't use MySpace so I don't care about that one" imagine what is someone else can do if they controlled the id and shared information with it.
Once you have the id's, then the discussion with your coworker comes into play. I would recommend building the profile on each site. It is simple and fast to do. It also may expose your site to people who otherwise may not find it.
After the profile is created, then Syed's points should be considered. The value of your profiles with these various networks increase with your level of activity. Simply creating the profile does offer some value, but not much.

Just creating zillions of social profiles for a link isn't going to help much. In fact there are many automated software, the borderline spammy ones, that does it for you but those links don't add value and if you domain is not of high authority, it could potentially even cause a dent on the domain 'trust' level.
If I were you, I would focus on few in the beginning - Twitter, FB, Linked & Youtube or other one depending on your niche, and add couple of more social networks every month, so you are building on social signals without quickly thinning out on the activity levels for each. You don't have to be very active in all networks, but have more than just couple of social profiles is good. Digg and SU is definitely worth considering because of the traffic they can send to you along with the longer term social juice for SEO

On a website, is the most effective user experience for the social media icons to open new tabs?
There is debate around what is most effective for user experience. When a user clicks on the social media icons on our site, should a new tab be opened for the social media page or should the website redirect to the social media page?

When with Google+ bio area backlinks get devalued if we have everybody link to our site
Hello, As you know, Google+ bios, if they have a link in them are dofollow. I'm doing a link building campaign, and we already linked one of our Google+ pages to our home page and top 2 articles. My question is, to get links, can we have family and friends add links in their bios too for a total of 6 links to the home page (6 people) and some links to our articles? Or will Google devalue them because we are family and friends? How many is too many? Thanks.

How can i make our social network site rank higher?
Our site is currently not in the first 3 pages of Google. it is a social networking site that requires users to login/ register. Much of the content is therefore user generated and is as diverse as the users themselves. The problem is that SEOmoz crawler is not even picking up the keywords i inserted into the site. Does this mean that Google is not even picking them up as well? Our site is www.yookos.com

Is it okay to have different gmail ids for Google plus and Google webmaster tools?
It was good until I have had this new website where Google plus has got an active account but under different id and the site has got its analytics and webmaster tools account set under another id. If I simply verify the site, will it be able to track authorship and social signals? Your opinions, help and guidance will be appreciated

Does creating a Facebook App help your social SEO factors?
We're looking to build out an event countdown widget for Facebook users to install as an App. Should we just focus on creating a useful app, or should we be trying to also optimise it for Likes, Comments, Shares etc. Having read the Searchmetrics 2012 report we're starting to ramp up our FB efforts...

Do social media buttons work better "within" a website or "outside" of a website?
Websites like techcrunch.com include the social media buttons (+1, FB like, linkedin etc.) to the left of their articles so they seem to float outside of the content. Some even let the social media buttons wander while scrolling, so that they are always visible (e.g. here: http://www.kirstenwinkler.com/news-from-palabea-and-how-to-prepare-kids-for-tomorrow/). The "traditional" way has been to include the buttons within the content, e.g. on top of the article or on the right hand side. I was wondering which alternative has the largest impact. Intuitively "outside" of the content should be more visible as it "breaks" with the website design. Has anyone done an empirical test which version gets more clicks?

How are the metrics measured in Open Site Explorer?
I am using Open Site Explorer to measure some metrics. The Facebook Shares, Facebook Likes, Tweets, and Google +1 metrics make no sense to me. Where and how are these being pulled? Is there a timeframe attached? Can I assign a timeframe to them? I have a ShareThis account that states one of my pages was liked over 3000 times but the metrics say 1 like. Very confused. Thanks for any help! Ari
