Domain.com and www.domain.com
-
I recently changed the settings in Google Webmaster Tools so that domain.com and www.domain.com are the same. Several quick questions.
-
About how long will it take for Google to list www.domain.com and stop listing domain.com?
-
The .htaccess file uses a 301 to redirect all domain.com paths.to www.domain.com paths. Now that Google has been informed these two are the same, are the 301 rules to add www necessary?
-
The default page is index.php. so domain.com gets 301 to www.domain.com gets 301 to www.domain.com/index.php. Is this the correct way to do things?
-
Are there SEO consultants who will help on small projects such assist on issues like this?
Best,
Christopher -

Thanks for the quick responses. I will add the redirect of index.php to domain.com/, but I don't know where the 301 of domain.com/ to index.php is coming from. It's not in .htaccess. Is that just a generic rule somewhere in the Apache server so that doman.com/ will default to an actual page?
Best,
ChristopherEDIT: I think I found the problem. The site was originally created using .html pages and later converted to .php pages. There was a 301 for index.html to index.php. I changed to to
Redirect 301 /index.html http://www.domain.com/
and also added
Redirect 301 /index.php http://www.domain.com/
-
I agree with Gianluca, but i would also add,
301 to www.domain.com or domain.com, but not to index.php
also do not 301 twice. 301 directly to the last final destination

Hi Christopher, Answering by points:
-
Google needs a certain amount of time before start showing just the canonical version of the site, time that depends on how big the site is.
-
I suggest you to keep the 301 redirection in the .htaccess file
- because so you are sure the the not www Urls in the SERPS are sending users to their www versions;
- because may exist backlinks sending to not www links and this way your a redirecting not only users but also a great % of that backlink juice to the correct URL;
- because exists also Bing, which obviously does not care of what you decide in GWT.
- what you did is incorrect. Infact the www.domain.com/index.php url version of the home page should have to 301 to www.domain.com, let say the opposite of what you have done.
Redirect 301 /index.php http://www.domain.com/
Finally, about finding SEOs, why don't you try the job section here in the Seomoz site, here > http://www.seomoz.org/marketplace/jobs?
Ciao

Changing from www to non-www impacting page authority?
I moved my website in May from Wix to Wordpress. Since then the home page authority has dropped from 27 to 16. The old website displayed as www.ajlansell.co.uk, but the new site is set to ajlansell.co.uk without the www (this was set by my hosting company). I tried changing the settings in Wordpress to www.etc, and the home page bounces back up to a page authority of 27 - but it messes up the menus and some other elements on the page so that the page is not displayed correctly. Is there any other way I can get that page authority back? Thanks.

When, if ever, would you need to use: example.com/en
Is there any reason to have /en on your website if your website is only in English? Or is it worth having in case you are preparing to translate into other languages? And is there any advantage to being: en.example.com over example.com/en Thanks

How often is your domain authority updated?
I can't seem to figure out how often our domain authority is updated - it seems random, do you know typically when this happens? Thanks!

Google showing my content on the serps in a different domain
Hi all, Recently a partner of ours discovered that Google is showing a meta description on the serps for his homepage that is not his but ours. On his site, he sells add-ons for our software, so the name of our software appears many times and as well there are many links pointing to our site. He claims he hasn´t copied this text from us, and I have used some tools to verify this. I don´t understand how Google can get confused and show our text as the meta desctiption on the serps for his homepage. Any idea on why this happened?

Can you canonical from one domain page to a different domain page
We are a boating site and have our main site with all it's products. We have an engine section within our main site. But we also have an outside domain, specific to a certain manufacturer of engines. So we want our customers to still find the engine information for this manufacturer within our main site, as well as find the manufacturer targeted engine site in the SERPS. My question is this: Can I canonical those pages within our main site to pages on the outside domain? Or does are canonicals to be used only within the same domain? Thanks,

URL Domain Used in Meta Description
Today I was asked if using a domain url in your meta description can have a negative impact on your website. This description includes a list of the homepage url, but directs visitors to a different internal page of the website. My concern fell with directing visitors to a different page of the site, but promoting the homepage in the description/snippet. With Penguin 2.1 release on the 4th, I'm very cautious of my links/urls. What are your thoughts behind this? What are the possible, if any negative impacts this could have on a site? This URL does have a brand name as so the Title.

Transition between a blog to e-commerce webshop, will my domain "lose" authority
Hi Seomoz'ers, Currently I am analyzing the best possible strategy which situation is as follow: I am having a blog with a great EMD about a specific product we are selling. The blog is currently ranking in position 1 for different keyword phrases. However I would like to make a switch from the current Wordpress blog to Magento webshop. Simply because the product should be sold through a professional webshop with many related products. Only the homepage of mydomainname.com is optimized. I am affraid I will lose my #1 ranking when I put my webstore online on this domainname. Most likely I will lose my PA and keep my DA. Which actions should I take in order to keep the ranking in Google position 1 with the new webstore? My best possible option I guess: 1. Replace the Wordpress blog with the Magento webstore and optimize the homepage with on-page seo of the webstore for the targeted keywords. Will this work? As the backlinks I've built are pointing all to the domainname.com (homepage). Thanks in advance. Any more suggestions are welcome 🙂
