Optimizing the canibalization

My client has a website that ranks 1st on ex: widget for website.com
The domain also has a section website.com/widgets that ranks lower in the SERP
The question is... are there any on-page elements or tactics to improve that specific page without affecting the overall home page performance?
-
That's a very serious consideration. I wouldn't wander too far from the primary phrase, and would even consider leaving the primary phrase on that inner page then having two others on that page that are tightly focused and related.
Add some internal links to those additional phrases, work on some inbound links with those. Just be sure you don't let that slip away and have the overall page's focus diluted away from the primary.

Great reply.
Would it be a better idea to leave home page as it's 1st place for the main keyword and target the sub-page longer keywords
ex: "keyword region" or some extensions worth targeting with a subpage.

It's a balancing act that requires as much art as science.
It essentially requires building simultaneous strength to both home page and internal page, and there's no quick fix way to do it.
I like to think of it as running right up against the edge of "too much" focus on that internal page, without falling into the "oops too much" hole.
And sometimes that does happen, so then you just focus a bit more on the home page for a while.
Then there's the long-term reality - competitors taking actions you can't anticipate, algorithm changes...
Given that long-term reality, I prefer not to get too stuck, on that one task or goal.

Homepage optimized for main keyword - adding the same keyword to category
Hello, We have a listing / classified advertisement website. The homepage is optimized for the main keyword lets say Prague clubs. The homepage shows around 50 latest listings. Now the homepage is not ranking well for the keyword. (By not well i mean in 3 months we have no ranking in the target SERP) Im thinking the issue might be that the keyword "Prague clubs" is not in any of the URL or category names. What do you think if i name one of the categories also to lets say "best prague clubs". This way i will have around 50-80 urls having the target keyword in them. (advertisements + the category itself) Will this help or actually dilute the keyword? What you think?

Optimize code
Hi Guy's, In Wordpress we've got the plugin "WP Rocket". It's possible to optimize CSS, JS, HTML and Google Fonts. If i optimize (minify) CSS and JS the website will load faster and the pagespeed will be reduced. So i guess that's always better for SEO results en SERPS... But what will happen if i optimize my HTML code? It will be much shorter but less organized. Will this also affect SEO results and rankings? I'm awear that less code will increase my text ratio, but don't know if Google will punish the website for having a code that's not very good organized. Thanks!

I get an A for the onpage reports from SEOMOZ. site: www.yakangler.com Keyword: Kayak Fishing

Optimal Structure for Forum Thread URL
For getting forum threads ranked, which is best and why? site.com**/topic/**thread-title-goes-here site.com**/t/**thread-title-goes-here site.com**/**thread-title-goes-here I'd take comfort in knowing that SEOmoz uses the middle version, except that "q" is more meaningful to a human than "t". The last option seems like the best bet overall, except that users could potentially steal urls that I may want to use in the future. My old structure was site.com/forum/topic/TOPIC_ID-thread-title-goes-here so obviously any of those would be a vast improvement, but I might as well make the best choice now so I only have to change once.

Optimizing one site for multiple countries
I am working on a project, where we have one website, with a country specific domain, which is currently ranking well in local search. The client now wants to expand his business into two new countries (all english speaking) and would like to rank for the same keywords in these two new countries. The customer do not want to create new websites for the new countries. Because its a local domain and the website is setup for local search in GWT with locally hosted server, i expect challenges in optimizing for new countries without impacting the current local ranking. Question 1: What would be the recommended approach for maintaining their existing ranking on local search, while optimizing for the new countries.

How does having an SSL impact search optimization?
My site has a forced redirect on the home page to https://. But that's only on the home page...other site pages are visible. How does this impact search engines crawling my site?
