Does poor quality on a subdomain affect a domain (with regards to Panda)?
-
We are considering moving some thin content from our site to a subdomain as a potential "panda" fix. But, we are unsure if Google will treat the subdomain as a completely separate domain or not. Does anyone have any data / Google info that might answer this question? Thanks in advance for your help!
-
the only way to inoculate the main domain if you go with a subdomain is if the topical focus of each is very different. If they're very similar, it's much more difficult to pull off. Of course if they're different enough, that's valid reason to not interlink.
If they're totally related, and there's no interlinking, it could be perceived as attempting to stuff search results with multiple entries.
-
Also, does it depend on how the subdomain is treated? I know in some cases Google will treat the subdomain as a separate domain, depending on interlinking.
-
Good suggestion, but unfortunately the content cannot be consolidated or changed (it is a directory of information). So, you do have personal experience with clients that shows that poor quality on a subdomain will affect the primary domain? Thank you!
-
I only have my own experience with clients and unfortunately can not point to case studies.
One alternative would be to consider keeping it on the main site and finding a way to consolidate some or all of it so you end up with more content per page.
-
Thank you. Can you elaborate on "entirely separately"? Exactly how separate are subdomains? Would no-indexing the content be a solution?
-
Thank you for your quick response. The "thin" content constitutes about 35% of the current traffic, and has potential for improvement in the future, so we prefer not to permanently eliminate it. We are searching for an immediate solution to show Google that content on the primary domain has improved. Do you have any external sources (google quotes) to show that poor content on a subdomain affects the primary domain as well? Thank you.

"Panda is a filter that Google has designed to spot what it believes are low-quality pages. Have too many low-quality pages, and Panda effectively flags your entire site. Being Pandified, Pandification — whatever clever name you want to call it — doesn’t mean that your entire site is out of Google. But it does mean that pages within your site carry a penalty designed to help ensure only the better ones make it into Google’s top results."From http://searchengineland.com/why-google-panda-is-more-a-ranking-factor-than-algorithm-update-82564Sub domains are not treated entirely separately. Moving content will not help, you need to improve it or lose it.
-
simply moving thin content, isn't advised under any circumstance, unless you don't care about organic search for the site it's on. If that is the case, then the site its on should be a stand-alone domain, not just a subdomain.
While the impact of it being on a subdomain will be less significant than the main domain, it's all part of the root domain package. Everything on a subdomain ultimately impacts the root domain and all others in that group.

A PDF with a good quality external link could affect the authority of that domain?
Here I go with a situation: You have an isolated PDF hosted in your domain, the PDF has none internal backlinks (neither links to another page on the domain) but has a really good external backlink from a domain with high authority. Do you think that the backlink has influence on the global domain authority and the domain rankings? Thanks!

Domain Authority... http://www.domain.com/ vs. http://domain.com vs. http://domain.com/
Hey Guys, Looking at Page Authority for my Site and ranking them in Decending Order, I see these 3 http://www.domain.com/ | Authority 62 http://domain.com | Authority 52 http://domain.com/ | Authority 52 Since the first one listed has the highest Authority, should I be using a 301 redirects on the lower ranking variations (which I understand how works) or should I be using rel="canonical" (which I don't really understand how it works) Also, if this is a problem that I should address, should we see a significant boost if fixed? Thanks ahead of time for anyone who can help a lost sailor who doesn't know how to sail and probably shouldn't have left shore in the first place. Cheers ZP!

Keep multiple domains or combine them?
I need some help figuring out if I should combine multiple domains or if I should let them be separate? I have domain1.com, domain2.com, and domain3.com. Well, domain1.com owns domain2.com and domain3.com. And currently domain1.com points to domain2.com and domain3.com from the homepage. They are going through some changes at their business, and now the option is on the table to combine the domains or still let them be separate as long as they link to each other. What is the best way to handle this and are there more things I should go through before making a decision? None of them have a ton of links to them, and they aren't super robust, but would just to have some advice. Thanks a lot

Sitemaps and subdomains
At the beginning of our life-cycle, we were just a wordpress blog. However, we just launched a product created in Ruby. Because we did not have time to put together an open source Ruby CMS platform, we left the blog in wordpress and app in rails. Thus our web app is at http://www.thesquarefoot.com and our blog is at http://blog.thesquarefoot.com. We did re-directs such that if the URL does not exist at www.thesquarefoot.com it automatically forwards to blog.thesquarefoot.com. What is the best way to handle sitemaps? Create one for blog.thesquarefoot.com and for http://www.thesquarefoot.com and submit them separately? We had landing pages like http://www.thesquarefoot.com/houston in wordpress, which ranked well for Find Houston commercial real estate, which have been replaced with a landing page in Ruby, so that URL works well. The url that was ranking well for this word is now at blog.thesquarefoot.com/houston/? Should i delete this page? I am worried if i do, we will lose ranking, since that was the actual page ranking, not the new one. Until we are able to create an open source Ruby CMS and move everything over to a sub-directory and have everything live in one place, I would love any advice on how to mitigate damage and not confuse Google. Thanks

Duplicate Content - Panda Question
Question: Will duplicate informational content at the bottom of indexed pages violate the panda update? **Total Page Ratio: ** 1/50 of total pages will have duplicate content at the bottom off the page. For example...on 20 pages in 50 different instances there would be common information on the bottom of a page. (On a total of 1000 pages). Basically I just wanted to add informational data to help clients get a broader perspective on making a decision regarding "specific and unique" information that will be at the top of the page. Content ratio per page? : What percentage of duplicate content is allowed per page before you are dinged or penalized. Thank you, Utah Tiger

Pros and Cons of new subdomain and redirecting old subdomain?
Hi guys, I am thinking about redirecting the ranking subdoman to a new subdomain which has my main keyword within it. I am trying to outrank an exact match competitor and don't seem to be able to do so. For example: page.example.com would be my existing ranking URL which is very powerful, and I am thinking about redirecting this to a new URL being keywordpage.example.com What are your thoughts on do this? When to delete low quality content
If 75% of a site is poor quality, but still accounts for 35% of the traffic to the site, should the content be 404ed? Or, would it be better to move it to a subdomain and set up 301 re-directs? This site was greatly affected by Panda.
