100 Words per category
-
These are the numbers of words I have heard mentioned as being "good enough" for the categories of ecommerce pages. Even at a stretch 50 words maximum.
What are peoples opinions on the volume of words required ?

this is why I'm glad EGOL is around when I'm not. Not only does he really know what he's doing from an SEO perspective, he runs his own site - proof from real world stuff.
Myopic SEO says "how little can I get away with". Sustainable SEO says "What can I do to eventually dominate in this niche, and not have to play the games other sites do."
100 words? Sorry - My recommendation to clients is 400 words on category pages, 1000 on information pages.
400 too much for you to swallow? Start with 200 each. Do other best practices SEO tasking - if you still find you're not getting the visits and conversions you want, write more high quality content.
-
I don't think it's the quantity so much as the quality. EGOL alluded to this. Semantic processing of keywords in relation to other keywords in a context relevant to the search term is key. We have examples of this where our site beats much larger and authoritative sites on long tail keyword phrases even with their brand name included. This is as a direct result of the number of ways the keyword is used in relation to other keywords.

....comparing to other sites with less content ranking higher than them...
A lot more goes into rankings than the number of words on a page.
If I wanted to save money on content I could find a lot of examples of short copy sites that rank ahead of me.... but my attitude on this is..."The hungry person usually eats the other guy's lunch."

I was looking at the site sportsdirect.com as an example .
and comparing to other sites with less content ranking higher than them ?
search arsenal home shorts

If you were google and you had a choice between two pages... one with 50 words and one with a few hundred. Which would you think is higher quality?
We have pages with short content on our site.... but we are working to improve them. When we improve a page from 50 words to a few hundred words that usually results in two things... 1) a ranking increase... and, 2) a lot more long tail traffic from the greater diversity of words on the page.
Time well spent.
-
Is it really needed though I know examples of sites with 50 words doing really well ?
granted the factors of link building are probably coming into play
-
Sure... 100 words... that's probably "good enough".... but in a competitive space don't you want "kickass"?

Strange Key Word Results on Google
I'm trying to rank for the keywords "Chicago General Contractor" My landing page is https://3fconstruction.net/chicago-general-contractor/ However, in Google a variant page on my site (How to apply for a General Contractor's license - https://3fconstruction.net/how-to-apply-general-contractors-license-chicago/) that is optimized for "General Contractor License Chicago" is coming up first and the target page does not even seem to appear. I've forced a google crawl of my site and the page still does not appear. I've used the moz on-page grader and results of the target page are good. I'm perplexed and wonder if google is preventing the target page from appearing. Any thought on how to fix this?

Ecommerce - how many clicks from the home page should categories be
My client has about 300 products in 20 categories with a lot of overlap. How many clicks from the home page should we keep the products? We're not doing pagination. I'd been told several years ago that all products should be 2 clicks or less from the home page. Is this true today? Thanks.

New CMS system - 100,000 old urls - use robots.txt to block?
Hello. My website has recently switched to a new CMS system. Over the last 10 years or so, we've used 3 different CMS systems on our current domain. As expected, this has resulted in lots of urls. Up until this most recent iteration, we were unable to 301 redirect or use any page-level indexation techniques like rel 'canonical' Using SEOmoz's tools and GWMT, I've been able to locate and redirect all pertinent, page-rank bearing, "older" urls to their new counterparts..however, according to Google Webmaster tools 'Not Found' report, there are literally over 100,000 additional urls out there it's trying to find. My question is, is there an advantage to using robots.txt to stop search engines from looking for some of these older directories? Currently, we allow everything - only using page level robots tags to disallow where necessary. Thanks!

Does concatenating two words make them lose their SEO value
I'm working with a client whose product titles are things like "InternetSecurity" and for branding purposes has thus far required any reference to the products be concatenated in this fashion (on page, links, URL, title tags). It seems to me that would greatly reduce their SEO relevance. Any thoughts? Thanks, Mark

Re SEO, Is it better to have a mega menu or one split into categories?
Hi From an SEO perspective is it better to have 1 large listed menu - over 100 internal links - or say a much smaller menu split into say 10 categories - so 10 links.
On-Page Optimization | | joeprice
This menu would be appearing on nearly all pages but not the home page In terms of the user experience, in my case, I have a feeling having 1 large menu is possibly preferable as it reduces the number of clicks the user makes to get to the desired information and categorisation can be a bit subjective, but i'd like some advice from an SEO perspective. Can you optimize for 2 keywords per URL?
Or should you just stick to 1 page, 1 keyword all the time? If you do 2, are there any things you should watch out for? Thanks
