Website "penalized" 3 times by Google
-
I have a website that I'm working with that has had the misfortune of gaining rankings/traffic on Google, then having the rankings/traffic removed...3 times! (Very little was changed on the site to gain or lose "favor" with Google, either.)
Notes:
- Site is a mixture of high quality original content and duplicate content (vacation rental listings)
- When traffic crashes, we lose nearly all rankings and traffic (90+%)
- When traffic crashes, we lose all rankings sitewide, including those gained by our high quality, unique pages
- None of the "crash" dates appear to coincide with any Panda update dates
- We are working on adding unique content to our pages with duplicate content, but it's a long process and so far doesn't seem to have made any difference
- I'm confounded why Google keeps "changing its mind" about our site
- We have an XML sitemap, and Google keeps our site indexed pretty well, even when we lose our rankings
- Due to the drastic and sitewide loss of rankings, I'm assuming we are dealing with some sort of algorithmic penalty
Timeline:
- Traffic steadily grows starting in Jan 2011
- Traffic crashes on Feb 19, 2011. We assumed it was due to a pre-panda anti-scraper update, but don't know.
- Google sends traffic to our site on March 1, then none the next day
- On June 16th, I block part of the site using robots.txt (most of the section wasn't indexed anyway)
- On June 17th, Google starts ranking our site again. I thought it might be due to the robots.txt change, but I had just made the change a few hours ago, and Google wasn't even indexing the part of the site I blocked
- Traffic/rankings crash again on July 6th. No theory why.
Site URL: http://www.floridaisbest.com
Traffic Stats: Attached
I know that we need more backlinks and less duplicate content, but I can't explain why our Google rankings are "on again, off again". I have never seen a site gain and lose all of its rankings/traffic so drastically multiple times, for no apparent reason.
Any thoughts or ideas would be welcome. Thanks!

Good to hear. Hope your site doesn't bounce back out of the index again.
-
Well, good news. I implemented a strategy based on the assumption that our site was just outside Google's duplicate content or quality guidelines. Our traffic rebounded yesterday!
-
I got a PM from another user who has a site with known duplicate content that was also penalized on July 6th. To my mind, that is further evidence that our site is suffering from algorithmic penalties due to duplicate content.

My apologies. I included a space.
site: http://www.floridaisbest.com (a space after the colon) shows this article as the first result, and the site not indexed
site:http://www.floridaisbest.com shows the site correctly indexed.

Site appears to be well indexed to me. You get no results for a site: search?
-
Hi Adam.
I looked at your home page and robots.txt file. All seemed ok. I confirmed the site is not indexed with Google. My next thought went to external links.
On the home page there is a "Travel Search" block. Those links don't work and cause my browser to hang. I tried a couple times and from different pc's using different browsers. I would suggest investigating the issue as it could be related.

Traffic from Yahoo/Bing is nearly non-existent.
-
Yes, nothing abnormal there.
-
No bought links.
-
No downtime that I know of.
-
-
No answers for you at the moment, but a couple of more questions.
-
Is there anything at all similar happening in Yahoo/Bing, or has their traffic been normal this whole time?
-
Have you checked Google Webmaster Tools for any notices from Google about possible penalties or hacking of your site?
-
Anyone in the company tried to "help" by buying links?
-
Any downtime with servers?

Site appearing and disappearing from google serps.
Hi, My website is normally on page 2-3 on google consistently. Over the past month it has been appearing and then completely disappearing from the serps. One day it will be on page 2, then the next day completely missing from the serps. When i check the index it seems to be indexed correctly when doing site:mysite.com. I don't understand why this keeps happening, any experience with this issue? It doesn't seem to be a google dance as far as I can tell. When my other sites dance they typically just go up or down a few ranks for a couple weeks until they stabilize. Not completely fall off the search engine.

Google panda, penguin or Patience needed?
Dear friends, On 3rd of May, i suffered a Manual google unnatural outbound link penalty. I recovered from the said penalty on 27th of June. However, i have noticed that my traffic has been dropping since 23rd April. I am confused where to target my work. Should i work on thin content and is it an algorithmic Panda problem (but my keywords are still ranking good) or is it a Penguin problem (I had 6 domains with payday loans backlinks and i have dosavowed 32 backlinks recently) What should be my plan of action here and what would you recommend? An image is attached herewith for your reference, PHd8BzX.png

Mutliple Websites for Same Company (different areas of practice)
My company has had one primary website for a number of years, a few years back we created a second website separate and apart from the first one to generate more business in a niche market that we cater to. Since then we ended up adding 3 more websites to help increase our footprint with more content. Each of the new websites deal with a major aspect of our business and the content generated on those websites are related to those areas of our business. My question is - is it bad idea to have a network of 5 websites for SEO-purposes? What are the pros and cons and why? Any supporting resources to back up your position would be greatly appreciated. Note there is no "duplicate content" problem here, all content we create is unique to the site it is hosted on.

Would Google Remove Pages for Inactivity?
Hi, I've been watching the Total Indexed number for 4 domains that I work with for the last few months. In Google Webmaster Tools three of them were holding steady up until August-September, when suddenly they started declining by hundreds of thousands of URLs a week. I've asked my IT department and they say they haven't done anything technically different in the last few months that would affect indexation. I've also searched on google and on search marketing blogs to see if anyone else has experience this to no avail. As you can see in the image, the "Not Selected" pages have not increased so it appears this is not due to duplicate content (of which we have a lot). However, the "Ever Crawled" number is increasing. The only reasonable answer that I can conclude is that Google is now de-indexing inactive URLs? Anyone have a better answer? yIYDm.jpg

Google's reaction to site updates
Hi, Is it safe to assume as soon as Google indexes updates I've made to my site that any ranking changes the updates effected will happen at that same time, or is there ever a lag time before these changes ( if any ) take effect?

Rel="author" - This could be KickAss!
Google is now encouraging webmasters to attribute content to authors with rel="author". You can read what google has to say about it here and here. A quote from one of google's articles.... When Google has information about who wrote a piece of content on the web, we may look at it as a signal to help us determine the relevance of that page to a user’s query. This is just one of many signals Google may use to determine a page’s relevance and ranking, though, and we’re constantly tweaking and improving our algorithm to improve overall search quality. I am guessing that google might use it like this..... If you have several highly successful articles about "widgets", your author link on each of them will let google know that you are a widget expert. Then when you write future articles about widgets, google will rank them much higher than normal - because google knows you are an authority on that topic. If it works this way the rel="author" attribute could be the equivalent of a big load of backlinks for highly qualified authors. What do you think about this? Valuable? Also, do you think that there is any way that google could be using this as a "content registry" that will foil some attempts at content theft and content spinning? Any ideas welcome! Thanks!
