Mutliple Websites for Same Company (different areas of practice)
-
My company has had one primary website for a number of years, a few years back we created a second website separate and apart from the first one to generate more business in a niche market that we cater to. Since then we ended up adding 3 more websites to help increase our footprint with more content. Each of the new websites deal with a major aspect of our business and the content generated on those websites are related to those areas of our business.
My question is - is it bad idea to have a network of 5 websites for SEO-purposes? What are the pros and cons and why? Any supporting resources to back up your position would be greatly appreciated.
Note there is no "duplicate content" problem here, all content we create is unique to the site it is hosted on.

As long as you have a good content plan in place, you will be good.
Already you don't have duplicate content. So no need to worry about the negative impact.
If you want to increase SEO benefits then you need to show differences in several areas like tone, anchor texts, link sources, etc. Such practice will help to increase rankings of each site for a specific set of keywords.

This was a common practice for some a few years ago and many still do it. My understanding is that search engines started to figure out the interrelation and there's some SEOs I know who consolidated rather than risk being penalized because if it's not done well, it seems spammy.
Part of it also had to do with managing multiple sites, plus the user experience (why are there so many sites for what seems to be one company?) can be compromised.
I've noticed the trend of even major sites, with different business niches, moving under one domain - like Honda or Ford - rather than keep them separate.
-
Cross linking between own sites isn't a bad idea. but its good to keep the anchor text different.
I wouldn't consider this a bad idea i am doing it myself.
Since you mentioned there is no duplicate content, i think its all cool.

Google ranking penalty: Limited to specific pages or complete website?
Hi all, Let's say few pages on the website dropped in the rankings due to poor optimisation of the pages or hit by algo updates. Does Google limits the ranking drop only to these pages or the entire website will have any impact? I mean will this cause ranking drop to the homepage for primary keyword? Will Google pose the penalty to other pages in the website if few pages drop in the rankings. Thanks

Have you ever seen or experienced a page indexed which is actually from a website which is blocked by robots.txt?
Hi all, We use robots file and meta robots tags for blocking website or website pages to block bots from crawling. Mostly robots.txt will be used for website and expect all the pages to not getting indexed. But there is a condition here that any page from website can be indexed by Google even the site is blocked from robots.txt; because crawler may find the page link somewhere on internet as stated here at last paragraph. I wonder if this really the case where some webpages have got indexed. And even we use meta tags at page level; do we need to block from robots.txt file? Can we use both techniques at a time? Thanks

Can we add header tags followed by header tags without text in-between? Best practice?
Hi all, I need clarification on this. We are adding new pages where H2 is followed by few bold bullet point headings with plain text description under each bullet point. I am just wondering whether we can given these bold bullet points as H3 tags as just leave as text. In the below example, can "**Good for website" **and "**Good for visitors" **be H3 tags or not? Benefits of SEO (H2) Good for website: Followed for best practices to show in search results Good for visitors: Will give better user experience. Number of H3 tags followed by a H2 is fine? In fact header tags followed by any header tag if Okay without plain text in-between? Thanks

More pages or less pages for best SEO practices?
Hi all, I would like to know the community's opinion on this. A website with more pages or less pages will rank better? Websites with more pages have an advantage of more landing pages for targeted keywords. Less pages will have advantage of holding up page rank with limited pages which might impact in better ranking of pages. I know this is highly dependent. I mean to get answers for an ideal website. Thanks,

Using a sites custom code for multiple websites: good or bad?
Is it bad to utilize a custom codebase for multiple websites? Does that play a factor within Google? Also, what about hosting sites with the same custom codebase on the same dedicated server?

Why a terrible website ranks number 1??
Hi, I'm an SEO newbie. A couple of months ago I launched a new E-Commerce website for my client : http://www.corporategiftsshop.co.za The site has over 1000 pages indexed in Google. I've done some link building and on-page SEO for the keyword terms : corporate gifts

promotional items
promotional gifts Currently the website ranks number 31 for "Corporate Gifts" in Google.co.za What I cannot comprehend, is that the site which ranks number 1 is simply shocking! http://www.corporategifts.co.za/ It is a single, static webpage with all links pointing to another website : http://www.promogifts.co.za It has 1 back link and a page rank of zero, yet it still ranks number 1? Can anyone give me a reason or some insight into this as it has me stumped.. Some of the other sites in the top 5 are also poor, yet they still rank high. Our site has a Page rank of 5 and 67 unique domains which links to it ( according to our webmaster tools ) yet it still only manages a 31 ranking?? Any advise would be greatly appreciated as I need to make sense of this, otherwise hang up my SEO gloves.. Regards, Marnus.1
