Am I losing link juice with 302-redirected faceted navigation?
-
My site has faceted navigation that allows shoppers to filter category page results by things brand, size, price range, etc. These pages 302 redirect to the same page they came from, which already include canonical meta tags. I added the rel="nofollow" attribute to the facet links and added the line "Disallow: /category_filter/" to robots.txt.
One of our SEO consultants told me that this is likely diluting the potency of the page's link juice since they are divided among all the page's links, including the links I am instructing crawlers to disregard.
Can anybody tell me whether I am following the best practices for links that redirect to the same page?
-
I considered this but our shopping cart software is has a lot of "black box" features including this one, so I have no control over how this feature is handled. Also, we use SLI search with site champion, which does a very similar auto-generated landing page function for category facets so including this function again would be redundant and possibly dilute our indexed results.

Why are you 302 redirecting in the first place? Doesn't make much sense to me.
Why aren't your filter links simple hyperlinks?
The correct way to do this would be:
- Set urlrewrite's that match your filter expressions (e.g. /category1/brand, or /category3/xxl)
- In your category results page have hyperlinks that point at the rewritten urls (you build these dynamically)
This will avoid 302's completely and stop any redirects.
An alternative to this would be to server side filtering of data on page postback and avoid redirects this way.
I'm not sure how correct your SEO consultant is about the link juice being divided amongst all links inlcuding those that are nofollowed. My understanding is that if it is nofollowed, the search engine essentially ignores it.

It sounds to me that you are in the clear. The use of the canonical tag would prevent pagerank dispersion, the use of the nofollow tag would as well, and the robots.txt file should prevent the spidering of those pages. Is google indexing any of the category filter pages?

Question regarding Site and URL structure + Faceted Navigation (Endeca)
We are currently implementing the SEO module for Endeca faceted navigation. Our development team has proposed URLs to be structured in this way: Main category example: https://www.pens.com/c/pens-and-writing/ As soon as a facet is selected, for example "blue ink" - The URL path would change to https://www.pens.com/m/pens-and-writing/blue-ink/_/Nvalue (the "N" value is a unique identifier generated by Endeca that determines what products from the catalog are served as a match for the selected facet and is the same every time that facet is selected, it is not unique per user). My gut instinct says that this change from "/c/" to "/m/" might be very problematic in terms of search engines understanding that /m/pens-and-writing/blue-ink/ as part of the /c/pens-and-writing/ category. Wouldn't this also potentially pose a problem for the flow of internal link equity? Has anyone ever seen a successful implementation using this methodology?

What Links to Disavow?
I am looking through my website's link profile that I pulled directly from Google Webmaster Tools. What is the best way to determine the links to disavow? Maybe the Webmaster Tools list is not the best list for this process but I really need to clean up the links that are hurting the site's SEO. Does anyone have any insight?

Multilingual Redirection
Hey there awesome Mozzers, I have a site that it automatically redirects people by using geolocation ( i know that probably is not good ) to the various languages of the site. I just wanted to know Is 301 or 302 the best option? ( I've heard that for language re-directions 302 is the best case scenario ) My main page for example is www.example.com and it automatically redirects with a 301 to www.example.com/en for any language that is not there. What is the best case scenario? Leave it to redirect to /en or just leave it go to the root page www.example.com.

Do links to PDF's on my site pass "link juice"?
Hi, I have recently started a project on one of my sites, working with a branch of the U.S. government, where I will be hosting and publishing some of their PDF documents for free for people to use. The great SEO side of this is that they link to my site. The thing is, they are linking directly to the PDF files themselves, not the page with the link to the PDF files. So my question is, does that give me any SEO benefit? While the PDF is hosted on my site, there are no links in it that would allow a spider to start from the PDF and crawl the rest of my site. So do I get any benefit from these great links? If not, does anybody have any suggestions on how I could get credit for them. Keep in mind that editing the PDF's are not allowed by the government. Thanks.

Wordpress: Too Many Links + Trackback 302
Hey, I see that all the blogposts that we have done to date (6) are being showing as having too many on page links in the seomoz crawl but I am quite confused about this as I cannot count more than 30 (including side bar, footer and header) per post. Can anyone shed any light on why this may be occuring and/or how I can check which links are being picked up? Secondly I have a number of temporary redirect warnings all related to the blog. The 'trackback' URL of each post to date has a 302 direct to it's respective blog post. What is the best solution here? Change to a 301 possibly? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
