Is it Panda?, how to deal with AP etc newswire articles
-
A site I have lost 30% of its traffic in June then another 10% in July, is it Panda?
The site has 10's of thousands of AP or other syndicated articles on it, they are not there for SE benefits, they are categorized and relevant to the people who read them, the site gets half of its traffic from type ins/bookmarks.
Should I nofollow the articles or rel="canonical" them? what can help......
Cheers

Thanks again, I guess I will have to look through keywords and see what traffic these news pages are still getting from google, then weigh up whether to tag them.

Panda isn't a penalty per se. It is a algorithmic change to how Google ranks sites and pages. If your site has duplicated content on it, you will need to fix all of it. Once your site has been cleaned up, it will can take a month or more for Google to fully re-index your entire site and see all of the duplicated content gone or properly handled (i.e. noindex or canonicalized).
It's not as if you have 1% of duplicated content that your site is affected but no one knows for sure what exact percentage triggers this effect, so your best course of action is to clean it all up.
By using the canonical tag, these pages will be removed from the index for your site. The "harm" would be that if someone searches for the pages your site wont be listed unless you have relevant comments for the search query.

Thanks, is there any way that I could trial this on the site by just adding the tag to a few pages or sections? Is it domain level metrics google is using, they have decided that the site is junk now as it has so much duplicated content?
The articles are slightly changed and there are comments on them.
What harm could I cause by trialing the canonical tag? if I took it of there later could there be some recovery time?
thanks a lot

If this content is merely duplications of articles which exist elsewhere then yes, you can add the canonical tag pointing to the source.
You would definitely not want to "nofollow" these pages. By adding a nofollow tag you are telling search engines not to flow page rank to the other links they find on the page. That is not the result you desire.
You could noindex the pages as well. Prior to doing such I would ask if you are offering comments or other user generated comments. If you are not, then the noindex tag is fine. If you do offer UGC, then I would recommend the canonical tag.

On our site by mistake some wrong links were entered and google crawled them. We have fixed those links. But they still show up in Not Found Errors. Should we just mark them as fixed? Or what is the best way to deal with them?
Some parameter was not sent. So the link was read as : null/city, null/country instead cityname/city

Combining variants of "last modified", cache-duration etc
Hiya, As you know, you can specify the date of the last change of a document in various places, for example the sitemap, the http-header, ETag and also add an "expected" change, for example Cache-Duration via header/htaccess (or even the changefreq in the sitemap). Is it advisable or rather detrimental to use multiple variants that essentially tell browser/search engines the same thing? I.e. should I send a lastmod header AND ETag AND maybe something else? Should I send a cache duration at all if I send a lastmod? (Assume that I can keep them correct and consistent as the data for each will come from the very same place.) Also: Are there any clear recommendations on what change-indicating method should be used? Thanks for your answers! Nico

Backlink Profile: Should I disavow these links? Auto-Generated Links etc
Hello Moz Community, At first I wanted to say that I really like the Q&A section and that I read and learned a lot - and today it is time for my first own question 😉 I checked our backlink-profile these days and I found in my opinion a few bad/spammy links, most of them are auto-generated by pickung up some (meta) information from our webpage. Now my question is if I should dasavow these links over webmasters or if these links shouldn't matter as I guess basically every webpage will be picked up from them. Especially from the perspective that our rankings dropped significantly last weeks, but I am not sure if this can be the real reason. Examples are pages like: https://www.askives.com/ -Auto-Generates for example meta descriptions with links http://www.websitesalike.com/ -find similar websites http://mashrom.ir/ -no idea about this, really crazy Or we are at http://www.europages.com/, which makes sense for me and we get some referral traffic as well, but they auto-generated links from all their TLDs like .gr / .it / .cn etc. -just disavow all other TLDs than .com? Another example would be links from OM services like: seoprofiler.com Moreover we have a lot of links from different HR portals (including really many outdated job postings). Can these links “hurt” as well? Thanks a lot for your help! Greez Heiko

My Article Post Title in both the h1 and the h2 are the same. Is this good seo?
I'm seeing a common practice in wordpress themes where the h1 tag for a page has the logo in it, then the h2 would be the title to the article. I've decided to place the title in the h1 dynamically, like this: - Joe's Auto Store where '' is the actual title to the post - the logo is still being used as a background image in the h1... So for example, the page would show this: How install a car battery - Joe's Auto Store I think this is good seo still, but the other issue is that the first, subsequent also has the exact same title because this is the actual post title, which uses the first h2 on the page to display the title. So the code would look like this: - My Company paragraph content text stuff an example would be How install a car battery - Joe's Auto Store How install a car battery At Joe's we teach how to install batteries on site. There are mor...(etc.) Is this an issue since the post title in both the h1 and h2 are nearly the same (except for the company name)? Is this good seo still?

Doing SEO for site that publishes articles everyday?
Hi, I was wondering on the best way to do SEO for a site that publishes articles daily. In other words, I add a new url to my site daily. How should I ensure that the new pages are optimized? Do I need to submit each new site to search engines? Any tips?

Ensuring Assets (PDFs, PowerPoint Files, Word Docs, etc.) are Indexable on Site
Hi there - I'm working on an educational site in which users will be able to search our repository of PDF articles, PowerPoint files, and so on through an on-site search engine. What is the best way to ensure each of these documents/assets are indexable by Google since they technically don't reside on an HTML page....they are just pulled up if the user searches for them? The site itself is just a few pages, but the files, articles, and videos in the repository are in the hundreds. Should I just name and tag them properly and make sure they're all included in an XML site map? Anything else suggested? Thanks very much!
