    Hi, Just been reading up on theme pyramids, I have seen these before but found a good article on the subject going into quite some detail. http://www.canonicalseo.com/theme-pyramids/ Using the word 'Pyramid' does scream black hat to me but looking at the structure, this must be the best way for internal linking. Even the keyword structure looks good, Example: homepage - shoes category - red shoes sub category - size 7 red shoes Building anchor text links for shoes, red shoes or size 7 red shoes will benefit all 3 terms. Negative/Positive comments please.

    We are currently migrating our site to a new CMS and in part of this migration I'm getting push-back from my development team regarding the HTML sitemap. We have a very large news site with 10s of thousands of pages. We currently have an HTML sitemap that greatly helps with distributing PR to article pages, but is not geared towards the user. The dev team doesn't see the benefit to recreating the HTML sitemap despite my assurance that we don't want to lose all these internal links since removing 1000s of links could have a negative impact on our Domain Authority. Should I give in and concede the HTML sitemap since we have an XML one? Or am I right that we don't want to get rid of it?

    I have about 10 - 15 URLs that are redirecting to http://www.domainname.comwww.domainname.com/. (which is an invalid URL)The website is on a Joomla platform. Does anyone know how I can fix this? I can't figure out where the problem is coming from.

    Hi, Since January, the Google rankings for one of our sites has been jumping around. Sometimes it's on page 1, then it disappears and comes back around 1 month later. It's strange because it's only a small section of the site that it's happening to. Every other section of the site is doing really well. Just wondered if anyone else is having this problem, or has had it and can suggest any fixes. There are no technical issues, no changes have been made to the site, all I can think is it's Google messing around with their algorithm? Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Karen

    I've been working diligently to remove page errors that appear after each scan of my website. I was down to 3 or 4 errors after the last crawl, now this week I'm getting 80 plus. I haven't changed anything since last week (page titles, etc.) so what's up?

    Hi there, I have over 150 Duplicate Page Title errors showing up in SEOMoz but on closer inspection these are related to the 'Sort By:' functionality on our ecommerce site that allows customers to sort our products by Price, Alphabetically etc. To give an example: http://www.parklanechampagne.co.uk/park-lane-champagne/special-occasions/easter Is showing as being duplicated by this page: http://www.parklanechampagne.co.uk/park-lane-champagne/special-occasions/easter?productlisting_page=1&sortorder=Price Does anyone know how I can resolve this?     I work on an e-commerce site and for many of the products we sell, we rank #1 for "product name + item number" related searches. We decided to add product videos to some of our products in the hopes of getting an additional listing in the SERP's (regular listing + video listing in universal video results) Instead.. What we've noticed is that sometimes we are not getting 2 listings but just a regular listing with a video thumbnail that ranks somewhere on the middle of the first page. The video thumbnail is great.. but I'd rather the #1 position. I don't think Google likes to show video results as the #1 position for obvious product searches. What do you think? Did we lose our #1 position because of adding the videos to our product pages? Any advice or similar experiences? ~~ Additional information: On some of those queries, Google had decided to ignore our video and we have maintained our #1 ranking. Thanks!

    I have a website that contains some products and the old structure of the URL's was definitely not optimal for SEO purposes.  So I created new SEO friendly URL's on my site and decided that I would use the canonical tags to transfer all the weight of the old URL's to the New URL's and ensure that the old ones would not show up in the SERP's.  Problem is this has not quite worked.  I implemented the canonical tags about a month ago but I am still seeing the old URL's indexed in Google and I am noticing that the cache date of these pages was only about a week ago. This leads me to believe that the spiders have been to the pages and seen the new canonical tags but are not following them.  Is this normal behavior and if so, can somebody explain to me why? I know I could have just 301 redirected these old URL's to the new ones but the process I would need to go through to have that done is much more of a battle than to just add the canonical tags and I felt that the canonical tags would have done the job.  Needless to say the client is not too happy right now and insists that I should have just used the 301's.  In this case the client appears to be correct but I do not quite understand why my canonical tags did not work. Examples Below- Old Pages: www.awebsite.com/something/something/productid.3254235 New Pages: www.awebsite.com/something/something/keyword-rich-product-name Canonical tag on both pages: rel="canonical" href="http://www.awebsite.com/something/something/keyword-rich-product-name"/> Thanks guys for the help on this.

    I am wondering, what effect does geo-targeted "cookie cutter" content have on SEO. For example, one might have a list of "Top US Comedians", which appears as "Top UK Comedians" for users from the United Kingdom. The data would be populated with information from a database in both cases, but would be completely different for each region, with the exception of a few words. Is this essentially giving Google's (US-based) crawler different content to users? I know that plenty of sites do it, but is it legitimate? Would it be better to redirect to a unique page, based on location, rather than change the content of one static page? I know what the logical SEO answer is here, but even some of the big players use the "wrong" tactic. I am very interested to hear your thoughts.

    I have modified a the URL structure of a whole section of a website and used mod_rewrite 301 redirect to match the new structure. Now that was around 3 months ago and I was wondering how long should I keep this redirect for? As it is a new website I am quite sure that there are no links around with the old URL structure but still I can see the google bot trying from time to time to access the old URL structure. Shouldn't the google bot learn from this 301 redirect and not go anymore for the old URL?

    I am a web designer but a bit of an SEO noob (trying to get better at both). I am working with one particular client on a site I inherited with existing structure.  This client has about 10 products on 2 pages.  On every page there is a product list that is basically the same list sorted in 2 ways: 1st by product, 2nd by usage.  These all link to internal anchors so this might be an example on www.site.com Cleaner X1 - links to www.site.com/cleaners.php#x1
    Cleaner X2 - links to www.site.com/cleaners.php#x2
    Cleaner X3 - links to www.site.com/cleaners.php#x3
    ...
    Cleaner For Brick - links to www.site.com/cleaners.php#x1
    Cleaner For Marble - links to www.site.com/cleaners.php#x2
    Cleaner For Stone - links to www.site.com/cleaners.php#x3 Obviously this adds about 20 links on every page on the site (including the actual pages these products are on). What are your thoughts on this?  Good idea or bad to have on the site?  Should I remove the redundant links on the actual page that product falls on...or is this bad and should be removed altogether?

The popular alternatives are: Annotum (new, based on Wordpress and containing scholarly articles) Wordpress.com Blogger Although those could work I am seeking out other viable alternatives.     How many links with page authority do I need to beat or get closer to competitor with page score 78 and domain authority score 72, if we already score 68 on page and 62 domain authority. This is in one of many beauty product markets. I ask because there is a company offering me for $80 each 10 links with higher than 70 page score (up to 80) and higher than 74 domain score (up to 86). All the other factors: number of links and social are almost the same for our website and the competitor's

    I have a client who is a acupuncturist and operates clinics both in Chester and  Knutsford  in Cheshire the site performs well for  Chester based terms such as "Chester acupuncture"  this is the primary location the client wishes to focus efforts on but would also like to improve rankings for the Knutsford  clinic and area. I have setup local places pages for each clinic  and registered each on different local directories. Both clinic addresses are placed on each page of the website and have a map to each on the contact page. Most of the on-page SEO elements such as page titles, descriptions and on-page keywords mainly focus on the term "Chester" over "Knutsford"  is it advisable to target both  locations in these page elements or will local search have an effect on this and will reduce/ dilute overall rankings for Chester clinic? I haven't setup and separate page for each clinic location as this might help in terms of SEO for improving ranking for both locations but from a user point of view it would just duplicate the same content but for a different location and also would create duplicate content issues. Any advice/ experience on this matter  would be greatly appreciated.

    It's a while ago that (i thought) I read the following information on the Google badge. Here https://developers.google.com/+/plugins/badge/ we have the implementation guide, however I was under the impression the Google badge could be thereafter extracted into SERPs so the user could follow etc... direct from SERPs. I can't find anything confirming this. I think that it might clash with authorship data which does a similar job, but where a site page is not relevant to authorship at all, I would have thought linking back to the G+ page from SERPs was a sensible option. Can anyone confirm the Google badge can appear in SERPs?

    Hi All I have been looking in the Google webmasters tools account for a client and from out of nowhere they suddenly have 42,000 links last time I checked it was just over 4,000. It looks to me like some of our affiliates have links showing, they are formatted so it goes via a php script that looks like accomtracking.php?estid=1234&ref=123 this link appears 3 times in the source code of the page that is linking to my client but Google webmaster tools thinks it is linking 12,000 times. I assume this is a problem with the database where the link points to, issuing a unique link for each visit or something similar but I am not sure how to explain it to my client and how to correct it / stop it happening again. There are around 37,000 links like this to the site from just 6 referring sites and the client have had an unnatural link warning so I am anxious to get this fixed. Any help gratefully received.     Moderate Link:Content Ratio = Directory Site
    Relatively High Link:Content Ratio = Normal Website
    Very High Link:Content Ratio = Article page or Blog Do you think Google is using it, especially during Panda Update? I am trying to find a reasonable cause of many situations like the PR of deep links or category pages in Directory sites has vanished. And if that has something to do with it.

    Hi guys, Ive been doing local seo for quite some time and had great results from both organic listings and local maps listings (and a merged listings). However ive noticed time and time again that local maps listings dont appear in serps on all local searches, even the most popular local search terms. Take the phrase "marketing company glasgow" local phrase,local intent but no maps results. But if you click on maps on the laft hand side, theres clearly tons of mpas results. Any ideas why google dont display local businesses on certain local intent phrases? Is there any way around this? Even with good on page seo, and good rankings organically, it would be great to get the maps listing on page 1 too. Thanks Robert

    HI, I have a client that I recently took on and I run a SEOmoz crawl on the website and a minor error was that .. 1. web pages have more than 200+ interlinks, reason for this is becuase the client offers a service to every place in the world and then has links to contact us/about us etc those kind of pages. is this something we need to strongly avoid? 2.     One of my domain names is not showing on Google's search results, when I type the URL in nothing appears. I notice something to do with blocked, but I couldn't find the message again. When I type in the actual URL in the search box it comes up  with the message that the domain is up for sale for $32 the year, but the strange thing is it is still registered to me and it's definitely not up for sale? I find this very strange has anybody got any ideas whatbn could be happening?     Hello, We are a UK based company. Our Google Analytics account is showing a rise in Avg Visit Duration for 'Direct traffic' since we started using SEOMoz. Are any other users experiencing this issue? We tracked it down to City Seattle, and when doing an Advanced filter by removing Seattle, the results are normal again. What does SEOMoz or other users recommend we do besides continuously using advanced filters? We have enquired about excluding Roger's IP address, but have been told that Roger uses the Amazon cloud, so the IP is not static. When you enter a term in Google it predicts what your trying to enter but I wonder what is influencing the order of the phrases. For example when you enter cms website the terms it autofills are not alpahabetical eg: cms website

Using the pai for PR distribution services has always been a great way to build backlinks but I just wonder whether these will be considered over-optimised in future?

    Hi, I've just created a campaign for my new wordpress blog and found 11 301 redirects which I was not aware of. It looks like wordpress has created them automatically. Does any one know how wordpress handles this issues or where are they stored so I can delete them? They are of no use for me. 9 of these redirects point to the same url with an added '/' and are in pages 1 is on a post. I've been changing the permalink and some urls several times and maybe one of these times the Wordpress has automatically created the 301 redirect. But why? I do not want to keep the old url. the last redirect is very strange it goes from http://www.mydomain.com/folder to http://www.mydomain.com where folder is the folder where I installed wordpress. But again, I want no one to type the url with the folder name or even know this folder exists. Any comment on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot, David

    I'm facing some issues after the google's recent update, been using blog networks, blog comments, web 2.0 submissions, directory submissions etc What techniques works now? i don't see any improve from web 2.0 these days may be we need to get enhance ? may be curated content? to what extent i understand this, i think they all are low quality backlinks which all the other blackhat markets use previous, and it even gets worst if we keep on doing this --- for the last 1-2 weeks i've stoped linkbuilding just searching for something concrete with this regard, because backlinks that are DoFollow is necessary to have! any thoughts on working techniques that won't harm my rankings?

    So I am a new blogger that has been submitting guest blog posts to a number of different blogs. It was recommended that I use the MBG Tracker so I can track the back links. The problem is that I am totally lost on how to use this tool. As I said before I am new to this whole thing and I am not really sure what constitutes a "base link" and a "back link."     I often use bit.ly or Google URL shortener in links when other websites post my articles so I can track clicks. However, I am thinking this may HURT my SEO given that it is taking away a back link to my website. Is that logic correct ? If so, what is a good way to be able to track clicks if a website posts your article without jeopardizing the SEO value?

    I get "form letter" type requests for links all the time from companies whose product has absolutely no relationship to mine.  I always decline them.  But I really want to build up link juice, and I'm wondering how to begin.  Is the "form letter" all right to send or should it be more personal?  I sell tablecloths; I assume I should go to home decor companies?     Hello. I am curious to better understand what I've been told are "shadow pages" for Flash experiences. So for example, go here: 
    http://instoresnow.walmart.com/Kraft.aspx#/home View the page as Googlebot and you'll see an HTML page. It is completely different than the Flash page. 1. Is this ok?
    2. If I make my shadow page mirror the Flash page, can I put links in it that lead the user to the same places that the Flash experience does?
    3. Can I put "Pinterest" Pin-able images in my shadow page?
    3. Can a create a shadow page for a video that has the transcript in it? Is this the same as closed captioning? Thanks so much in advance, -GoogleCrush

    I've set up a new campaign for a website specifically targetting a service offered in a specific UK city. It's on a .com domain, and we've managed to get a few powerful links and while its only been going for a few weeks it's starting to get decent rankings in Google.com but is nowhere to be seen in Google.co.uk. It's getting good traffic but not traffic that converts probably because it's targeted to the UK and most visitors are from the US. I've just set up Google places, changed geo targeting to the UK, I've moved over to a UK host and we're targetting UK sites for links. I think while things are still at an early stage it would be a good idea to move everything that's on the .com over to the .co.uk with a 301 redirect and send all new links over to the .co.uk. What do you guys think? Is this a good idea? Thanks

    I have noticed that the sites in my niche that were at the top of the SERP's are still at the top of the SERP's after panda. I have also heard people theorizing that links are no longer important, its now all about bounce rates, time on site, etc. Is there any consensus about how important links are after Panda? thx Paul

    Hi there! In our website, we have a few text boxes that users need to use to complete the goal. The boxes aren't search boxes, but it's still important to us to track what people type on it. I'm looking for a way to track the data through the "event" feature in Google Analytics, but it seems that this tracker can only calculate clicks, or video views etc. Does anyone knows how to track do it?

    Hi all, New to SEO Moz and this is my first question... I have a site that I am writing a 'widget' calculator for with the idea that the user can embed the results of the calculation on their website / blog. I currently convert the calculation html to an image and save it on the server and then also display the code for them to embed the image (including a text link back to my site). In order to try and get as many people to embed the results on their site I am not asking them to login / register on the site before they get access to the embed code. Is no login / registration the correct way to go? It means I won't be able to track if people have copied the image without including the text link. Is saving the output as an image the best way to enable the user to embed the content on their site and provide me with a link? The only alternative I can think of is to give them the html in an IFRAME code to embed it but the IFRAME would have to rank to pass on on the link back to our site. As well as giving an embed option I am also giving a 'link to these results' option in the format:
    http://mydomain.com/calculator/result.aspx?ID=20 I am doing this with the result ID in the querystring) so that instead of having (hopefully) hundreds of links each pointing to a page with one incoming link I would have one page with hundreds of links pointing at it and use a canonical tag to state that all these different results should be indexed as
    /calculator/result.aspx Does this sound like the best way to do it? Is it ok to use the canonical tag even though the results / page content will be different for each querystring variation? cheers.

    Hello everyone. I'm new to SEOMOZ and sort of a beginner with this SEO stuff but this does seem like the place to be to learn things. I spent quite a bit of time reading the blogs and found them very helpful - including everyone's comments. I'm not sure what to make of a couple of my campaign reports. I'm going through my campaign reports and  have a few questions. I guess the easy way is to break this down. Question 1: Crawl Errors: I"m getting duplicate content/page errors for the following pages. http://www.njsigncrafters.com and http://www.njsigncrafters.com/index.php Am I losing a bit of google points because of this and do I fix it by using a redirect? Question 2: When I look at my on-page analysis I'm getting grades of A-F. I'm figuring maybe I should have some recommendations about what to do but SEOMOZ gives me a grade and then leaves it at that. Besides reviewing my on-page factors am I missing something simple that I"m supposed to click on to see recommendations? I suppose once I get used to the way things work I'll get this SEOMOZ site figured out.

    Hi, I have a website http://goo.gl/IrJz4 and currently it was ranking well in Google US serps. And now i want to rank well it india too. Does doing more links will bring the results or do i need to do any on page seo ? Please advice me.

    Google is king, but it seems as though there is a significant source of traffic and revenue from Bing.  What is the preferred strategy?  Optimize for Google and hope it filters to Bing?  An obvious concern would be that if we change tactics to please Bing, we could stand to lose our rankings with Google.  Any opinions/thoughts/feedback/suggestions would be appreciated.
