  • Hi all, I have a quick question about the proper use of permalinks. Let's say that I have a website about sports and I want to create an internal page dedicated to shoes. I know that the keyword "shoe" has 15.000 monthly visits, while the keyword "shoes" has 1.000 monthly visits. How do I have to name the internal page? http://www.example.com/shoe or http://www.example.com/shoes (with a final 's')? I would think that by naming the URL http://www.example.com/shoes, the search engine would consider that page for the keywords "shoe" and "shoes", but I am not sure about it. Should I create a URL that only focuses on one specific keyword ("shoe", in this example) or a URL that may encompass more than one keyword ("shoe" and "shoes")? I hope this is clear. Thank you for your time and help. All best, Sal

  • Hello Guys, I need the community's help. I want to estimate the number of visits per month that I will have to generate in order to reach a particular revenue target(monthly). There are three brackets (income channels) in which I can divide this total number of visits - ORGANIC, CPC & ADVERTS. There are two parts to this question. Part A> What percentage of the three income channels should I give to ORGANIC??? Part B> What is the conversion rate I can achieve? Basically... I want to find out what is the general conversion rate that you guys normally achieve for your clients and what percentage of your total visits are through pure SEO and Social Media. I have done most of the calculation assuming that I will be able to achieve 4% conversion rate (but the answer scared me real bad :)).... do you think this is low??? or do you think it is alright? I will appreciate prompt response because I have to  give my client the forecast report in a few hours... I have done a lot of research and have finally turned to you guys for an answer... RAND... can u pitch in man??? That would be awesome 🙂 Thanks in advance for your input guys. Best Regards, Talha

  • Hi, So I have created my first campaign here and I have to say the tools, user interface and the on-page optimization, everything is useful and I am happy with SEOMOZ. However, the crawl report returned thousands of errors and most of them are duplicate content warnings. As we use Drupal as our CMS, the duplicate content is caused by Drupal's pagination problems. Let's say there is a page called "/top5list" , the crawler decided /top5list?page=1" to be duplicate of "/top5list". There is no real solution for pagination problems in Drupal (as far as I know). I don't have any warnings in Google's webmaster tools regarding this and my sitemap I submitted to Google doesn't include those problematic deep pages. (that are detected as duplicate content by SEOMOZ crawler) So my question is, should I be worried about the thousands of error messages in crawler diagnostics? any ideas appreciated

  • Unfortunately, Google has taken bits and pieces of my business and combined it with non-existent businesses and other rogue information.  So now my business has 3 locations. One proper listing that I created and manage. One that uses my website address but nothing else is correct in the listing. One that contains my name(incorrectly), but the address and everything else about it is incorrect. I have reported these places many times but they continue to hang around and I am lost/confused on what to do next. Please advise.

  • Hi Mozzers- We started a WordPress blog for one of my clients to help improve the domain authority, increase visits, etc. a few months ago. I ran a crawl report a few days ago and noticed that the /trackback/ pages are getting redirected to the appropriate page using a 302 redirect not a 301 redirect. I've search through the forum looking for other similar questions and found one. The answer suggested that I use the TAC plugin and check for any malicious code. I did this and found nothing. Another response suggested using the Redirection plugin. I haven't tried this yet. Has anyone encountered this and if so, how did you deal with it. Thank you! LHC

  • I am managing an online pharmacy website which has thousands of pages. I'm creating title tags for the pages that currently have automated tags.
I generally choose a word, find the next best alternative and merge them in the title.
Often this results in repetition of 2-3 words. Examples below:-
Title:- Skincare Treatment, Buy Skincare Products Discounted at Online Pharmacy Title:- Nebulisers, Buy Nebulisers UK Discounted at Online Pharmacy Title:- Electronic Dictionaries, Buy Best Electronic Dictionaries Discounted at Online Pharmacy Title:- Cat Skin Care, Buy Cat Skin Care Products Discounted at Online Pharmacy Are these OK or would Google penalize us for it?

  • Hello, I have a blog for one year now and in the overwall is going great. In all this time it was an awesome way to discovery some SEO mysterious and learn with experience wich in my point of view is the best way to do it. Now my observation is about links to other sites and what does that do. At the present I have about 35 keywords in the 3 first places in Google, bing e Yahoo. All good. I notice that the posts that I have links (dofolow) to other sites are performing better then those ones that only have internal-links. And Its curious that this change as starting to surface in Dezember of 2011. Now the confusion is about the SEOmoz observation towards external links. "You should avoid having too many (roughly defined as more than 100) hyperlinks on any given page. When search engine spiders crawl the Internet they are limited by technology resources and are only able to crawl a certain number of links per webpage. In addition, search engine algorithms divide the value of some popularity metrics by the amount of links on a given page." Now hell with this observation I say. Its working for me and for now on I will actually apply this SEO strategy when Im talking about a subject in a post:) What do you guys think? Whats your experince on this? Regards, Pedro M Pereira

  • So, I have about 100 different blogs that I am starting to organize into a list of potential guest blog opportunities.  I wanted to see how many subscribers each blog had to their site to better help identify the top influential blogs.  The only way I know how to do this is to search for the site inside of Google reader.  I was wondering if anybody knows of a tool or knows a way to scrape the blog subscriber count from Google docs, or something more scalable. Thanks, Jason

  • Many months ago, a fellow marketer at my company introduced me to Pintrest, claiming that it would be good for our business. Pintrest was very much unknown by many just a few short months ago. Since then, I have seen it take off like wildfire, with excessive media coverage, registrations, and people putting the button on their sites. It must have thousands more backlinks now than it did six months ago--high quality ones too, as it's had coverage in virtually every major new media outlet. I want your opinion as to why it has remained a PR6 site this entire time. It was a PR6 site then and it still is now. I know the increase in PR is algorithmic, but come on! Can people share their experiences they've had link building for those higher PR sites? How much harder does it get?

  • Hi! This follows on from my last question. I'm trying to improve the page load speed for http://www.gear-zone.co.uk/. Currently, Google rate the page speed of the GZ site at 91/100 – with the javascript being the only place where points are being deducated. The only problem is, the JS relates to the trustpilot widget, and social links at the bottom of the page – neither of which work when they are deferred. Normally, we would add the defer attribute to the script tags, but by doing so it waits until the page is fully loaded before executing the scripts. As both the js I mentioned (reviews and buttons) use the document.Write command, adding this would write the code off the page and out of placement from where they should be. Anyone have any ideas?

  • I know Matt Cutts suggestions we allow bots to crawl css and javascript folders (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNEipHjsEPU) But what if you have lots and lots of JS and you dont want to waste precious crawl resources? Also, as we update and improve the javascript on our site, we iterate the version number ?v=1.1... 1.2... 1.3... etc. And the legacy versions show up in Google Webmaster Tools as 404s. For example: http://www.discoverafrica.com/js/global_functions.js?v=1.1
    http://www.discoverafrica.com/js/jquery.cookie.js?v=1.1
    http://www.discoverafrica.com/js/global.js?v=1.2
    http://www.discoverafrica.com/js/jquery.validate.min.js?v=1.1
http://www.discoverafrica.com/js/json2.js?v=1.1 Wouldn't it just be easier to prevent Googlebot from crawling the js folder altogether? Isn't that what robots.txt was made for? Just to be clear - we are NOT doing any sneaky redirects or other dodgy javascript hacks. We're just trying to power our content and UX elegantly with javascript. What do you guys say: Obey Matt? Or run the javascript gauntlet?

  • Hi, I have an italian domain (.it) for an italian hotel, it is an old authoritative domain (1997) and it is well optimized for the keywords that include the city the hotel is in, now the page is decently positioned in Google Italy. There are many problems to have the same rank for German version (in google.de, google.at). The German version is in the /de folder. The hotel has another .com domain, much less authoritative (2007), in a German server, but it was and is only a simple redirect 301 (by code) to the German version in the .it domain. (obviously the rank for this domain is almost nonexistent). Do you have any suggestion? Thank you.

  • Hello, Is it possible that a website gets penalised by Google because your hosting company blocked you from sending emails? Basically I got a message from my hosting company saying that they were blocking me from sending emails from our server and domain because too many had mistakes or were complained about. The same day we dropped from 2nd on a keyword to about 600th while still being ranked for other keywords. The drop was for our main keyword. Can the fact we sent “bad emails” be related to a rank drop? For the record, those were confiormation emails for account creation, they were legit, not spam. That's off-topic though.

  • I just paid someone to submit me to a few directories and I saw were I was listed on one of them today.  The url page authority of where I was listed was a "1" with zero moz trust and zero moz authority.  The root domain authority is a "69".  Is page authority or domain authority the most important for links? I believe all the directories I was submitted to have url page authority of "1". ( I watched a video yesterday and I think the head guy said that page authority was most important but I am not sure.

  • I am trying to figure out how to best use SeoMoz tools to do some competitive analysis of inbound links. With the site explorer tool I can "compare Link Metrics" I see that a competitor is beating me on External Followed Links and Total Linking Root domains. I want to dig further into this data and see how these are distributed. What I am really after is which root domains are sending them the most links. Knowing that 20k of their links are coming from 5 specific root urls would be great to know. Is there anywhere that I can see this data. Ideal column headers would be: Linking Root Domain of Followed Links (from this root domain) Linking Domain Authority The ability to drill down from there into specific links would be mind blowing. Is there any way to browse this type of data in SeoMoz?

  • Hello Moz Community! I'm really struggling trying to decide on an improved site architecture. I run an online proofreading & editing website.  This leaves us targeting many different niche keywords. For example: blog editing/proofreading, essay editing/proofreading, book editing/proofreading, resume... you get the point.  I feel like editing & proofreading are similar enough to target on the same page(s). However, the issue is that I'm also having to deal with what I'm calling derivative keywords. For example, when I try to optimize for 'essay editing/proofreading', I also have to think about: paper editing, paper editor, paper correction, edit my paper, etc. I would have no problem optimizing the page for 'essay editing' in the title, H1, etc. and then targeting these words as secondary keywords within the body text, etc., however, I keep thinking 'a large slice of a small pie is better than a small slice of a big one.' You see, the keyword 'essay correction' has only about one-third the monthly searches as 'essay editing', but it is 50% less competitive.  The same is loosely true for the rest of the 'derivative' keywords. I'd have no problem building specific pages for these derivative keyword groups, however, I'm very concerned how this would effect my site from a user experience perspective.  I don't want to have a master "services" page with links to book editing, resume editing, essay editing, etc. and then also show paper editing, essay correction, etc.  To me, this would be confusing... "What's the difference between essay editing and paper editing?". Any guidance is much appreciated.  This has got my head spinning! Thanks!

  • OK, so I am not going to worry now about being a purist with the htaccess file, I can't seem to redirect the old pages without redirect errors (project is an old WordPress site to a redesigned WP site). And the new site has a new domain name; and none of the pages (except the blog posts) are the same. I installed the Simple 301 redirects plugin on old site and it's working (the Redirection plugin looks very promising too, but I got a warning it may not be compatible with the old non-supported theme and older v. of WP). Now my question using one of the redirect examples (and I need to know this for my client, who is an internet marketing consultant so this is going to be very important to them!): Using Redirect Checker, I see that http://creativemindsearchmarketing.com/blog --- 301 redirects to http://www.creativemindsearchmarketing.com/blog --- which then 301 redirects to final permanent location of http//www.cmsearchmarketing.com/blog How is Google going to perceive this 2-step process? And is there any way to get the "non-www-old-address" and also the "www-old-address" to both redirect to final permanent location without going through this 2-stepper? Any help is much appreciated. _Cindy

  • We are in the jewelry industry, and for Google product feeds, we list our products under "Apparel & Accessories > Jewelry". As of the new Google feed requirements, they are saying that we have to choose a gender and color for each product that is in the Apparel category. While this makes sense for clothes, it doesn't exactly for jewelry because many items are for both men and women, and there's not always a color associated with each product. I can enter some of these fields manually, but with 5,000+ products, it makes it difficult w/ each update. Anyone have solutions for this? Or a way around it? Can we just include those fields but leave them blank? Any other solutions?

  • I couldn't find this elsewhere in Q&A...so here goes. I recently (a couple of months back) shelled out $300 for a Yahoo Directory listing. My site got included, but my PageRank didn't budge. Figuring it may take a while, I kept on checking Google's index for the link - still nothing. Now it seems as if some Yahoo & other directory categories are excluded from the Google Index, rendering the links useless from a PR point of view. Anything I can do about this? I've heard of suggestions like linking to the specific page of the category where I'm listed, in the hope Google will crawl and re-index, but I don't know. Any thoughts / suggestions? BTW the directory category link is: http://dir.yahoo.com/Business_and_Economy/Business_to_Business/Communications_and_Networking/Telecommunications/Wireless/Software. Thanks in advance...

  • Hi everyone, I'm new to the group and can't find this question answered anywhere else. I have a dynamic site that we aim to rewrite the URLs removing parameters and making it easier for the engines to index us and users to recall URLs. The issue that worries me relates to canonical tags. If I put a canonical tag on a directory.. http://www.abc.com/spain (index page) and then point all variations of that page to the index page will it stop/pass juice for those pages at the next directory level to the index page rather than properly index and rank those pages appropriately. ie. http://www.abc.com/spain/Malaga.html will it pass any link juice I have for the second level to the first level? It concerns me that it will as I had a conversation with someone who lost all visibility on her site and it turned out to be the canonical tag on the home page that was causing it. Thanks in anticipation

  • My predecessor left me a gift of what is arguably the worst kind of Youtube channel name: Our company's name condensed to an acronym with some additional gibberish that may or may not have meant something to her. In short: Our channel name will never be searched for, will never provide any ranking boost. Now our Youtube success has been very marginal so far: 31 subscribers, 7,300 video views. Given that situation, should I seriously consider scrapping my channel and starting  something new with a keyword targeted channel name? Or does channel name matter so little that I should hold on to my 7300 video views?

Recently one of our clients requested us to publish the PR on their website as well as blast it out using PRWeb and Marketwire. I think that this is not going to be a duplicate content issue for our client's website since I believe that Google can recognize which content has been published first, but I will be more than happy to get some of the Moz community opinions. • Ok. My site has been running as whitetail-mafia.com for about 3 years now. I recently switched to a new host (had to say good bye to godaddy). In the change I switched the site to whitetail-mafia.net I have whitetail-mafia.com, whitetailmafia.com, and whitetailmafia.net set for a 301 redirect to whitetail-mafia.net. I have recently transferred all of these to the same host now. However, during my first run at OpenExplorer I found that the old site whitetail-mafia.com was carrying some good weight. Did I shoot myself in the foot? Should I transfer everything back to .com and redirect to it since it has some history? Will my rankings for .com transfer over to the .net with the 301 redirect? looking for the best advice here before I spend too much time having to rebuild...
