  • I'm in the process of creating new product specific URLs for my company. Some of our products have decimals in them for their names as a unit of measurement. For example - .The URL for a 050" widget would be something like: http://www.example.com/product/category/.050-inch-widget My question is - Can I use a decimal in the URL without ticking off the search engines, and/or causing any other unexpected effects?

  • Hello, A long time ago we set up an Adwords campaign for our company on my sister's personal Adwords account. My sister would like us to set up a new account under a business email for the new Adwords keyword research we want to do. Is using a $100 coupon appropriate for our new account? I honestly don't want to use it if it's against Google's policy. And is there anything else I need to keep in mind as far as fees or requirements in setting up a new account and/or using the coupon? Thanks!

  • Hi, We are coming to a bit of a crossroads at our company. Our current website www.revolutioninc.co.uk is ranking half decently in some of our main keywords and is moving in the correct direction. However. There is talk of us now producing a different website for each of our services Web Design, Graphic Design, Marketing and Print. I think I see the benefits of doing 4 seperately in terms of bounce rate probably improving, being able to produce a more concentrated amount of content per site, etc. We have a meeting on it tomorrow and I do have a good few key points to discuss regarding the advantages. Initially however, does anybody here have an opinion of the potential pitfalls/benefits of following this route. I'm thinking also in regards to the direction google is heading. Any opinion is appreciated, good or bad, as I want to put as informed decision as possible across.

  • Is it a good idea to outsource social media optimization or is it something that has to be done in-house? I understand the question is kind of vague, but what I had in mind was to have an offshore contractor post daily about individual products and try to increase our following on twitter/facebook (i.e "social footprint").

  • I am doing a variety of SEO link building techniques. I am doing: guest blog posts article submissions directories bookmarks web2.0 properties link acquisition I don't expect much from the article submissions, web 2.0, and directories, so I am using these methods for the long tail and less competitive keywords. Is this a good idea? When we talk about a link profile, is it per page or for the whole site? Does it matter if you have a more diverse link profile for a single page or does it have to be diverse for the whole site? Appreciate any informed comments!

  • Newbie so this may be SEO 101... Quick back story: My wife Lauri is a Dream Expert who has been on over 5,000 radio shows, TV shows like Good Morning America, the Today show, the View, in major magazines and newspapers, the list goes on and on, I'm not bragging actually the opposite. Lauri barely exists online and to top it off we don't seem to be getting any "link juice" from some big sites that have linked to us. Here is just one example of many: Our site: theDreamZone.com Here is a page on Dr Oz site that links to us, anchor text at top right "Click here": When you use On site Explorer this link isn't there, what are we doing wrong? Our plan is to build a new site (LauriTheDreamExpert.com) and get these links and many others pointing to us correctly so she can get the exposure she's earned. Lauri was also on the Dr Oz TV show : Watch it if you like. Thanks for any wisdom, Mike

  • Hi, my website http://www.in2town.co.uk/Holiday-News is about bringing travel and holiday news to our readers of our lifestyle magazine but i am having problems at the moment with the layout. What i mean by this is, i have written content on the page as an introduction so google knows what this section of the site is about but to be honest it looks rubbish with having the introduction there and i would like to know if i am doing the right thing by having the content there for google to know what my site is about. I have tried taking it away and noticed i dropped in the rankings and when i have put it back up i go up in the rankings, can anyone please give me some advice over this issue

  • Hi Guys, So here's the deal, my team and I just acquired a new site using some questionable tactics. Only about 5% of the entire site is actually written by humans the rest of the 40k + (and is increasing by 1-2k auto gen pages a day)pages are all autogen + thin content. I'm trying to convince the powers that be that we cannot continue to do this. Now i'm aware of the issue but my question is what is the best way to deal with this. Should I noindex these pages at the directory level? Should I 301 them to the most relevant section where actual valuable content exists. So far it doesn't seem like Google has caught on to this yet and I want to fix the issue while not raising any more red flags in the process. Thanks!

  • A deep page is ranking for a competitive and essential keyword, I'd like the home page to rank. The main reasons are probably: This specific page is optimized for just that keyword. Contains keyword in URL I've optimized the home page for this keyword as much as possible without sacrificing the integrity of the home page and the other keywords I need to maintain. My main question is: If I use a 301 redirect on this deep page to the home page, am I risking my current ranking, or will my home page replace it on the SERPs? Thanks so much in advance!

  • I'm putting together a link prospecting csv (very basic/simple).  I'm doing my own manual hunting for link prospects and compiling them in a list in that excel doc.  Once I'm done with that, I want to pull OSE data on a larger scale (MozRank, PA, DA, etc.). I know Niel Bosma's SEO tools for Excel exists, but I have a Mac, and it's not available for that.  And I can't really pay for any of the big tools right now (ie BuzzStream).  Does anybody know of a good tool or way of going about pulling this data in a way that will save time?  As opposed to pulling data for each URL one by one.  ANY tips would be GREATLY appreciated.

  • Hello SEOMOZ, I have a couple of questions that I am hoping you all can answer for me. 1. We have heard that having anchor text links in article directories that are identical actually hurts our rankings and is considered spam at this point. We have hundreds of articles posted to various article directories throughout the web with this consistent identical anchor text.  If we go into these articles and change the anchor texts, will the search engines recognize this change and give us credit for the new varied anchor text or will the credit stay with the original anchor text the article was posted with? 2. From here on out if we write unique stories with different anchor texts pointing to our website pages is their any gain to it and additionally will this even out our link profile? Or are placing anchor text links in article directories not the way to go?

  • Hi, If im researching a keyword in Google using the MozBar, and the first 5 results have stats like: PA:1 - MR:0 - MT:0 - DA:90 - Linking Root Domains:2 They are all pretty much the same, no power apart from the root domain which will be anywhere between 70-90. Does this mean ranking for this keyword will be a walk in the park? Or because the root domain is so strong its actually going to be a task. Cheers

  • We're closing down one of our eCommerce sites. What is the best approach to do this? The site has a modest link profile (a young site). It does have a run of site link to the parent site. It also has a couple hundred email subscribers and established accounts. Is there a gradual way to do this? How do I treat the subscribers and account holders? The impact won't be great, but I want to minimize collateral damage as much as possible. Thanks.

  • We are looking to use a 3rd party customer review provider and I have been told by their rep that it has a feature which allows us to display reviews placed with them about us on our website via JSON feed  or XML feed (I have limited technical knowledge so have no idea what this is but am hoping our developer does!) I wanted to ask whether providing data in either format has any SEO benefits? My initial thoughts to provide customer reviews was to be useful to the customer and be useful for search engines as it will be continually updating user generated content (?) Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

  • In implementing Schema with a site using CSS and containing existing tags, I want to be sure that we are (#1) using the tags effectively when used within a product detail template and (#2) not actually harming ourselves by telling Google that all products are named or described by the SS tag and not actually the product name or description (which obviously could be disasterous). An example of what we are looking at implementing is the following: Old: <ss:value source="$product.name"></ss:value> New: <ss:value source="$product.name"></ss:value> Old: <ss:value source="$product.description">New: <ss:value source="$product.description"></ss:value> Basically, is Schema at the point where the SS tag be replaced (in the eyes of the search engines) with the actual text and not the tag itself?</ss:value>

  • Hi, I'm just starting a backlinking campaign on a new website and am focussing on one deep page for client  - focussing a lot of good quality backlinks on that one page. I'm aware that most of the other pages, including homepage, lack good backlinks. Can I go ahead and focus powerful backlinks on that one 'deep' page without a problem, or may that approach result in negative impacts on other pages' SERPs.

  • Hi Guys, Really new to SEO, but i'd like to think learning quickly. The question: I really want to build up the linking profile for our website but  I don't really know how to go about it. We have many good relationships within the industry and i'm sure I could obtain some reciprocal links. The things is - where do I display the links on our website? I could create a 'hidden' page for purely links, but is this a bad practice and frowned upon? Also is this the best way to obtain good, authoritative links? I am assuming that linking to people with a root authority of 30/40+ would be beneficial. Or am I just plain wrong/out of my depth?! Honestly any help at all would be so appreciated.

  • Dear Seomoz expert, I have signed up for a free trial account for SEOmoz Pro. Im testing available SEO software to see which one is gonna make me work more efficient for my clients. Right now im doing technical analysis by hand which costs alot of time but gives me the ability to deliver high quality advices. One of the things i always thorougly check is the way a website is structured (code). I see a lot of relevant criteria for crawl analysis but dont see flash or frames. This is kind of important because on a full flash website there is no content for the Google spider to crawl. Frames can also cause issues looking at internal linking structure and all. How is this integrated in SEOmoz Pro? Greets, S.

  • Hi Mozland, We are going to have a new Nav Bar for our site built from the horror that we currently have to up with. We want to make it a simple affair, similar to The Guardian two-tier Nav Bar - main menu which will drop down to the 2nd tier according to what you clicked on in tier one. Regular stuff, I think. Any suggestions, from your experience, about how best to implement this, what to include, what not to do, what can be included and done to make it as best it can be to get people to peruse our site as easily as possible? • Running a keyword analysis in SEOMOZ it shows my the folowing information "Local Search Volume (Dec)". I compared the data for the specific country , language and keyword with the adwords keyword tool and it exactly showed me the same numbers. The adwords keyword tool shows: "Local Monthly Searches: This column shows the approximate 12-month average number of search terms matching each keyword" http://support.google.com/adwords/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=25148 So if the numbers are the same in google keword tool and  SEOMOZ why is SEOMOZ saying  that for a specif month? If the data is the same one of both can not be right or probaly I didn't get the point. See screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/GyaaW7EkwV Thanks for help

  • Hi, On the 'Viper chill' blog (some may of heard of this blog) he talks about interlinking content in an attempt to build up link juice to get more from the content and pass more PR to the target website. Here is the link to the post, a few scrolls down and your see a diagram. http://www.viperchill.com/link-trio/ I have also attached the image to this post, so we can discuss in more detail by referencing to it. Now this guy knows what his talking about, lots of big players back him up, but does this method actually work better then having one link from each article pointing to the target website? If an article links to another article surely the PR flows into other links on the page as well as your own down grading the power of it? If the answer is yes, would this work for guest blogging? link-triage.png

  • As Rand says on the Whiteboards, "Howdy SEOmoz fans", I am obsessed with Wordpress, but wanted to spread my wings a bit and have been playing around with Drupal.  I really like it. I had the idea for a new site that would have a Drupal set up (in the front end for pages and training) with a Wordpress blog on the subdomain or a directory for the Social Media integration I like to do with Wordpress. I'm just brainstorming a couple questions: 1. Would you guys and gals recommend sticking to just one or the other for SEO or does this not really matter as long as they are deep linked well? 2. Also, would you recommend subdomain or directory for WP? Have a good one, Jared

  • Hi, I am just wondering what the best practice is for marketing a business in two separate countries? I have a new client that wants me to create their website targeted at the UK market which for me is normal but they also want to target Australia (Probably couldn't get any further away) My initial thoughts are that the business would need two separate websites. The first one in the uk and the second website hosted on servers in Australia with different content. Is this correct? or does anyone have any advice which may simplify getting this thing off the ground. Thanks in advance.

Also what SEO considerations do i need to think about when adding this to my website. Thanks in advance for any help.

  • I'm looking or keywords that I may have failed to target.  It would seem that the traffic data SEO MOZ provides could be  a source for that. I thought I'd look at: URLs Receiving Entrances Via Search and URLs Receiving Entrances Via Search but I can only find the top 10 results or each.  I already know my most popular keywords, I need to find ones that are not getting as much traffic as they could. Is there a way to dig down deeper into this? I'm having trouble finding the value in this information for the top 10. What am I missing? Thanks!

  • From what I understand, if you search for a keyword say "blue widgets" and you click on a result, and then spend 10 seconds there, and go back to google and click on a different result google will track that first result as being not very relevant. What I don't understand is what happens when (and this happens all the time, i did it today) you click on a result go to that page, find it (not?) relevant and then get distracted, phone call, or someone calls you into another room in the office.  You end up accidentally leaving the tab open all day long, and never go back to the google search.  So your time on site to google is what? infinity? there must be an upper cap here? at some point they must say, ok, the user is gone, time on site = our maximum = 5 minutes?!? Get me? any insight?
