What to do with Deleted Posts?
-
Hi Guys,
To give way to the implementation of Google Panda, I have deleted some of my wordpress blog posts with low quality content.
Now, I am seeing some errors in my Webmasters Tools. What needs to be done so that these errors will be fixed?
Thanks....
-
If they have links pointing to them I agree with you, but if they dont, you should let them 404 or remove them though WMT,
-
Try this plugin to manage redirects from the WP admin panel.
I agree with several others that you should point users either to the homepage or main blog page after deleting those posts. The system will eventually realize what's going on and those errors will go away for you in Webmaster Tools.
-
Absolutely. If there isn't a relevant page then 301 to the home page.. eventually the old page will get removed out the respective indexes
-
I say to the relevant pages, as Duane Forresters of bing said that mass 301's to the one page will be discouned.
-
Thanks Simon...

Hi Michael
As there are no suitable alternative pages to 301 redirect them to, then yes, the Homepage will be fine, that will remove the broken links and provide a destination for anybody that clicks on one of the links.
Regards
Simon

Agree with all these responses.. add 301 redirects via .htaccess (or relevant technology applicable to your server) that will permanently redirect humans & crawlers to, at least, the home page or a relevant page with similar content.
Some of the deleted pages may still be linked from other sites or internal pages within you site...
-
Hi Simon,
The errors are 404 (Not found). Is it wise to 301 redirect them to the home page? as there are no suitable page for them.
-
Hi Allan, Yes I am referring to thin content and some that are duplicate.
Thanks for the advice, will try removing those in WMT.
-
Hi Michael
That depends on what the errors are that you're seeing in Google Webmaster Tools.
Broken Links (Pages not found) could well be one; if so, identify pages that are still linking to those old blog posts and remove those links or change them to a page that does still exist.
Or you could place a 301 redirect on those old blog post pages to a suitable page that is still live (which would have been good to do originally rather than just deleting the old posts, though you may have implemented 301s already, I don't know what your errors are).
Perhaps those old blog posts are still included in your sitemap.xml; have a look and if so, remove them from the sitemap.
You could also request through GWT that the old blog post URLs be removed from Googles index.
So a few things to have a check of there. Best of luck,
Simon

What do you mean by low quality?
unless it was duplicate or very thin content, i would not worry.
but since you have delete them, you need to do nothing, those errore will eventualy go away, but if you have links to those posts, then you might want to do a 301 rediret to a relevant page to keep the link juice. If they were low quality the chanses are they did not have any links to them, so do nothing.
You can go to WMT and remove them from the index immediately, but its is not necessary

Should we set up redirects for all deleted TAGS?
We recently found our site had 65,000 tags (yes 65K). In an effort to consolidate these we've started deleting them. MOZ is now reporting a heap of 404 errors for tag pages. These tag pages should not have links to them so not sure how come they're being crawled. Any suggestions from experience in this area would be useful.

Thanks and health, Elliott

Should we change the publish date in WordPress when updating a post?
Hi everyone, We're going through some of our old posts in our WordPress blog and updating them, adding new information, new links, and photos. My question: If we update the posts significantly, should we also update the "published" date to today? If we only correct some typos or a dead link, we don't touch the date. However, if we've done some real work on the post, we'd like to update the published date in order to bring it to the top of our blog feed and draw new attention to the post. However, I'm a little nervous that this could be seen by Google as spammy, as it's not technically a new post and the URL already exists in Google's index of our site. Here's an example of a post that was published several years ago and then updated a few week's ago with new information (and a new date stamp): http://www.eurocheapo.com/blog/barcelona-tip-five-cheap-eats-under-e6.html Any thoughts on this? Thanks, Tom

How to delete video rich snippets?
Hi mozzaholics, At first I was very happy to have video snippets appear in Google (200 pages), but now after 6 months I see a drop of almost -30% in traffic, whilst the average rank stayed the same, compared to the star snippets I have for other pages. So I want to remove the video snippets and have the old rich snippets back. I tried removing the videositemap and google's the structured data tool doesn't show video snippets. Does anybody know what else I can do to remove the video snippets? Is there anybody who succeeded deleting them? Please share your wisdom. Ivo

Delete 301 redirected pages from server after redirect is in place?
Should I remove the redirected old pages from my site after the redirects are in place? Google is hating the redirects and we have tanked. I did over 50 redirects this week, consolidating content and making one great page our of 3-10 pages with very little content per page. But the old pages are still visible to google's bot. Also, I have not put a rel canonical to itself on the new pages. Is that necessary? Thanks! Jean

Additional product information: the product's sales page or a blog post?
I want to go in-depth about different customizations for custom caps, which is one of the products we offer. I just don't know whether it would be better--from an SEO perspective--to expand the caps sales page we already have or to write a blog post to give the site another valuable indexed page. From a user standpoint, I don't think it's as important, because if I do it the blog way, I can't just put a link on the page saying, Want more customizations? Visit our blog post. Any opinions?

Which do you believe & why? Wordpress posts or pages?
I hear a lot of conflicting opinions regarding when to use pages over posts. If you were using wordpress mainly as a static site and less of a blog would you use pages over posts? Let's say it is a yacht review site. Would you set up most of the content (boat review pages) as pages or posts? I hear some say in that case you would want to use mostly pages and use posts for news related items. Then there are others that suggest only making the few (contact, about, privacy, terms) as pages and everything else created as posts organized into categories. Any thoughts? Also, is there a tool to find out if a website that is not yours is using a page or a post? Thanks
