Too Many On-Page Links
-
Hi All,
New to SEOMoz, so thanks in advance for any answers! Looking at our Crawl Diagnostics and "Too Many On-Page Links" is first on the list.
The site was build with the intention of users being able to quickly get to where they want to go with drop down menus (sub nav), so we built the navigation using bullet points/css.
Yes, agreed there are too many links on each page from our navigation, main nav cats are 4 with sub nav about 40, but what is the best way to resolve the problem other then removing most of the links (from the sub nav drop down)?
Could we just use the attribute rel=nofollow for the sub nav links?
TIA
-
Yep, so the only way to conserve is to cut back on the navigation from what I've gotten so far.
-
Nofollow doesn't conserve any juice anymore, any juice just evaporates through a nofollow. So if you have five links and four are nofollow, you don't get 100% of juice going through the one link, you still only have 20%. Does that help?

Hi Keri,
Great post..thanks! I now very much understand the limit and what it meant and what it means today.
I guess I should now re-phrase my question to something along the lines of; for SEO purposes would it be better to leave the sub nav links as is or use something like rel=nofollow to conserve the flow of "juice"..and what is the best practice for doing this?
-
Hi Shane,
I totally agree with you and that is what most SE's state in their best practices , but wanted to know for the sake of tightening up the "juice". Thanks!

For more background on how many links is too many, check out this post from earlier this year by Dr. Pete. http://www.seomoz.org/blog/how-many-links-is-too-many

So I am not totally sold that "Too Many on Page links" is a universal blanket metric.
What I mean specifically is....
If the links are useful, and benefit the user experience (navigability) I think that "Too Many on Page Links" does not necessarily apply.
I really in my opinion think this is mostly for Link farms, content farms ect...
If the links are necessary, relevant and help the user find what they need....
Then i am not sure it is a problem.
It would be good to get others opinions on putting rel=nofollow for the sub nav links, but personally I do not think this is a good idea, but others may have a different opinion as traditionally this would help you conserve "juice" so i think it could help, but have never tested.

Sitelinks to internal pages
Hi Moz Community, Is it only possible to get sitelinks to your main domain in the SERPs or can you also get them to internal pages in the SERPs? i.e. if this were to pop up in the SERP: www.mysite.com/page1

Can I get sitelinks such as the examples below:
Sitelink1: www.mysite.com/page1/page1a
Sitelink2: www.mysite.com/page1/page1b
Sitelink3: www.mysite.com/page1/page1c
etc. Just curious and I haven't really find anything like that on the internet. How can I set them up? Thanks.0 -
On page links
Hi I am really intrigued by Bloomberg strategy. if you look at their article pages they are full with internal links done with what I assume to be an automated process (too many pages to be done manually). it seems to work for them. I would love to hear your opinions.

Description tag not showing in the SERPs because page is blocked by Robots, but the page isn't blocked. Any help?
While checking some SERP results for a few pages of a site this morning I noticed that some pages were returning this message instead of a description tag, A description for this result is not avaliable because of this site's robot.s.txt The odd thing is the page isn't blocked in the Robots.txt. The page is using Yoast SEO Plugin to populate meta data though. Anyone else had this happen and have a fix?

Do we have too many links in our footer?
Hi guys, we have 41 links on our holiday(vacation) rental website, this seems too many when looking at best practice. 24 of these are links to community pages while 8 link to activities pages. The community and activity pages are also accessible from links on the top menu so they are not strictly necessary but do get 10% of site clickthroughs according to Google in-page analytics. I therefore do not want to remove the links if there is no good evidence that google will penalize us for this. What do you think would be best for our site? Thanks, John Tulley. footer.jpg

Excessive Internal Links & links to same location
Hi, When Google is counting internal links on a page and it comes across two links to the same url, do both of the links count towards Excessive Internal Links? The reason I ask is that on our website we allow users to navigate through the website in different ways (either by dropdown menus or side menu or through breadcrumbs); which cause some links to appear multiple times on the same page. Any thoughts? K.

Page title
So if we have a main category page on our site (mines an ecommerce site), do we go for more than that main keyword phrase for that category of products, or is it better to just keep it by itself, and not utilize the 65-70 characters available?
