Multiple country site versions and hosting
-
If I intend to have 5 versions of an e-commerce site, one for each countries marketplace, would it be best to:
a) Host each site in its own country
b) Host all sites from 1 server/1 country
I'm presuming that hosting in each country is better? But how quantifiable is this, and is it worth the extra hosting and management costs?
Any advice gratefully received..

Thanks guy, lots of what you say make great sense and has given me lots to think about and research further.
Much appreciated.

Make sure they all have their own tld, and you will not have no duplicate content problems.
make sure you use the correct dataing formats and currencey formats for each countries, spelling alsoSee what Matt Cutts has to say.

Rand does a great job with this issue here: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/international-seo-where-to-host-and-how-to-target-whiteboard-friday
This is worth a read too: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2010/03/working-with-multi-regional-websites.html
Every situation is different but it can be more beneficial to host everything on a .com with subfolders for each language - e.g. www.somewebsite.com/es, www.somewebsite.com/fr etc. Each subfolder URL can be geotargeted in Google Webmaster Tools. This would be much easier than maintaining 5 separate websites.
I don't agree with Zsolt - if you have a .fr you wouldn't need to host in France as the .fr covers it, the same with .de, .it or any extension. Some people prefer to click on a website with their native domain extension in the URL, probably more so with e-commerce sites (something to do with trust, easy shipping and so on) - so that's something to take into consideration. I can't remember if Rand mentions this in the above video.

Hello Gary,
The better solution for sure is to host sites in their own county like mentioned here: http://www.dirjournal.com/articles/multilingual-seo/
At the mean time you should take the product into consideration as well. If it has low serch traffic and not really competitive in the target country you can give it a try with one page, as a tld for english sites does not prohibit it to rank in France for example, so traffic and competition matters, but different tld and hosting are better choice in the long run.
If you are doing it with one site you can implement a content delivery network so that you pages are loading faster in target areas and taht is good for seo, however it does not replace the signal the local server gives to google about the target area.

New site. How important is traffic for a new site? And what about domain age?
Hi guys. I've been building a new site because i've seen a real SEO opportunity out there. I'm a mixing professional by trade and so I wanted to take advantage of SEO to help gain more work. Here's the site: www.signalchainstudios.co.uk I'm curious about domain age. This site fairly well optimised for my keywords, and my site got pretty good content on it (i think so anyway). But it's no where to be seen on the SERP's (link at all). Is this just a domain age issue? I'd have though it might be in the top 50 because my site's services are not hard to rank for at all! Also what about traffic? Does Google want to see an 'active' site before it considers 'promoting' it up the ranks? Or are back links and good content the main factor in the equation? Thanks in advance. I love this community to bits 🙂 Isaac.

English Site ADDING Spanish Version
I have an English wordpress site that I'd like to duplicate and translate in Spanish...does anyone recommend using a subdomain (espanol.xyz.com) or something like a .com/es/ format? I'm also interested in any SEO issues that might arise and want to keep SEO in mind while building this segment of the site. Any other tips or things to think of?

Reindexing a site with www.
We have a site that has a mirror - i.e. www.domain.com and domain.com - there is not redirect both url's work and show pages so basically a site with 2 sets of URLs for each page. We have changed it so the domain.com and all assorted pages 301 redirect to the right URL with www. i.e. domain.com/about 301's to www.domain.com/about In the search engines the domain.com is the site indexed and the only www. page indexed is the homepage. I checked in the robots.txt file and nothing blocking the search engines from indexing both the www. and non www. versions of the site which makes me wonder why did only one version get indexed and how did the clients avoid a duplicate content issue? Secondly is it best to get the search engines to unidex domain.com and resubmit www.domain.com for the full site? We are definately staying with the www.domain.com NOT domain.com so need to find the best way to get the site indexed with www. and remove the non www. Hope that makes sense and look forward to everyone's input.

How To Handle Duplicate Content Regarding A Corp With Multiple Sites and Locations?
I have a client that has 800 locations. 50 of them are mine. The corporation has a standard website for their locations. The only thing different is their location info on each page. The majority of the content is the same for each website for each location. What can be done to minimize the impact/penalty of having "duplicate or near duplicate" content on their sites? Assuming corporate won't allow the pages to be altered.
