Should I use the Root domain as a landing page for 2 languages?
-
Dear Sirs,
I am developing a site www.mysite.com , this site has content in spanish www.mysite.com/es and in english www.mysite.com/en
I would like to know if for SEO purposes if it would be good to have an enter page (landing page) at the root of the domain www.mysite.com where the users can choose the language, so I can get backlinks from both languages to the home page in this case the enter page.
The thing is for spanish I dont see many seo resources so this way I can get links for the homepage www.mysite.com from english and spanish resources.
and then focus in each folder language to get links for each one, english link sfor /en and Spanish Links for /es
Thanks in advance,
David

Thanks a lot Simon for answering, my site wont have any geo target , just english and spanish speakers, one of my concerns for example is about submitting to directories, if I dont have a landing homepage for language selection, so should I submit the spanish version with this url www.mysyte.com/es to directories in spanish and my english version with this one www.mysyte.com/en to directories in english , but this way my root domain wont gain strenght from the directories links. Thanks in advance, David

Hi David
Two answers for you here:

If the Spanish version of your site is actually for people who live in Spain rather than say Spanish people living in the US, then your best approach from an SEO perspective would be to host the Spanish version of the site in Spain, with a .es tld, eg. www.mysite.es
-
If your site is for say just US residents, those living there that speak American English and/or Spanish, then by all means have your site available in both languages.
In this instance, I would not recommend having a landing page instead of a proper homepage (e.g. at www.mysite.com) because that will be a barrier to your main content, plus most links to a site usually point to the homepage, they would be wasted links to a homepage that's just a landing page for language selection with no valuable content on it, a fake homepage if you like.
For this scenario, have your website default to the main language (probably American English) with an obvious and prominent option for Spanish speakers to easily choose to change the language of the site to Spanish.
Hope that helps,
Regards
Simon

Root Domain Link for Affiliate's Link
It seems my affiliate link: http://www.hrmsplugins.com?partners=21 is not being considered as a "root domain" backlink when this link is used on their website. Is there a reason for this?

Is it better to link back to the root domain, or the specific page you're optimizing for?
I'm working on a project our site - building links for iPhone Repair. For the term "iphone repair miami" - is it more ideal to link to the root domain (xxx.com) or to the subpage that is about iPhone Repair (xxx.com/iphone-repair)? I would imagine the latter - but obviously that page has less authority than the root. Thanks!

About to get my competition domain, how what I can do?
Hello, I'm trying to get a domain from what it used to be my main competition, if I get this domain can I forward the domain to my website? because they have good local ranking that I don't have and also a lot of links. I don't really want to use that brand name, I just want to take advantage of the links they already created if that possible. Or can I do something else with the domain or just buy it and keep it so nobody else can buy it? Thank you

Is traffic useful without links?
We have many articles on our sites that bring in a large volume of traffic but bring no links. As an example we wrote an article about the hottest cities in the world. The article brings in over 1000 hits a month on Google and people spend an average of 4 minutes on the page and never return and never link to it. The article also doesn't bring in business because the company sell Air Conditioning. From an SEO point of view should we focus any time at all on writing articles that are useful for the internet community that bring in traffic but don't bring in many (any) links?

Domain Authority and nofollow links?
Hello, I'm wondering, are 'nofollow' links from websites with high domain authority beneficial? Would they boost our own DA? In essence, I'm wondering if there is added value (other than visitors clicking the link) to being linked to by a 'nofollow' link. Thanks!

Should I 301 Redirect The index.html Page?
Hello, As an experiment I am trying to work with an SBI site but am noticing index.html is being forced on me as the homepage. As I understand it's good practice to 301 redirect the index.html page to the to the actual home page. Can someone please confirm that I am right in thinking this? Here is an example: http://www.anguilla-beaches.com/index.html

http://www.anguilla-beaches.com/ According to yahoo 773 links are pointing to the index.html page and 771 links are pointing to the / page. I'm sure Google knows that these are the same pages and does not consider them as duplicate but surely the index.html page should be redirected right? am I going mad here? Now if we look at this site: http://www.jugglenow.com the homepage has 198 links according to yahoo
http://www.jugglenow.com/index.html this page also has 198 links? now I am confused, are these 2 the same page? On this page: http://www.jugglenow.com/juggling-balls.html notice how there is no link to the actual homepage but there is a link to the index.html page. Am I missing something here because I can't figure it out, surely there should be just 1 homepage without a index.html page. Any help would be appreciated0
