Young site trying hard, but banging head against the wall -- Site Review
-
Hi All
New to PRO but we're seriously committed to getting this working. And firstly thank you to anyone who offers any useful thoughts and insights.
We've launched a new site, unfortunately late to the market for the season and are really struggling to get search engine recognition.
Site: http://www.ignitehats.co.uk/
We're continuously adding new content, slowly gathering more links and working hard to promote socially.
But even on our clearest search terms like "Ignite hats" we're down on page 4.
Both GWT and the Seomoz tools highlight no big problems (a few titles that are too long) but otherwise nothing.
Maybe wrongly we requested that the Google spam team review our site incase it was being penalised, but got a template response saying the site was not in their spam system (phew, there wasn't a reason it should be we believe).
We're wondering if this is just that our site is just too young? It's been live for 6 weeks. But worry maybe this is not the case. We've had success with another site we run much sooner than this.
Any help or pointers would be really appreciated. Similar stories and what others have done, at least to give us some confidence to carry on would be great.
Thanks for reading.

Hi Dan
Thank you for the detailed and well explained response.
Yea we found the filter results pages and the issue of so many appearing and made a change to stop this. Google doesn't seem to of updated that yet. I wonder if it's worth going through and removing these from Google?
We're working on content. The site is pretty new and there are only so many hours
but we'll keep pushing on with more content.
I'll look at the full report for the keywords and then work through that, thank you.
Regards
Zac

Hi
Few things I saw right off the bat:
- Doing a site: search in Google (site:ignitehats.co.uk) I see LOTS of duplicate meta descriptions, and LOTS of pages that look like empty search results getting indexed. (like this one)
- Google has 6,000+ pages in the index for the site, but screaming frog only found 700!!
The other answer about backlinks might have merit to it, but none of that's going to help until you get these technical issues fixed.
I would honestly proceed this way;
1. Get a complete site audit done by a professional
2. Make the technical changes needed
3. Fill out then content some more. The site overall is very "thin". Not much text, especially important pages that should carry authority like the home page and category pages.
4. Wait for Google to re-crawl
5. The use this tool to answer the question "why does a site rank where it does?" Make sure to run the full report.
6. Then work on backlinks.

ALSO - your site is loading with AND without the www and /index.html does not redirect. All possible variations of the homepage should redirect to only one.

Yes the sites listed are all from us.
Thanks for your response. I guess we'll keep plugging away

Think i see some problems there with the links ...
melikeshoes.co.uk
grendhaflipflops.co.uk
riderflipflops.co.uk
likeshoes.co.uk
ignitebeanies.co.ukmelbymelissaflipflops.com
melbymelissa.netAre they from the same owner because all the footers looking the same. Why i am asking this is because google probably does not think it is wurth much all the same kind of link from pages of your own.
I would focus on getting good links and believe me for your site that aint going to be a problem. Maybe write somne blogs with links to your site.

First i wanna say...cool site really nice design...
Now comes the shitty part when i go to open site explorer i see that there i NO Link to your site.
Here i placed a link look for your self:
At your question about if it is because your site is Young .... Yes it is..Ranking takes time. There really are no short cuts or none that will last anyway. Just try to get some good links to your site and make sure the link have good ancher texts to. Over time you will see the changes.
Hope it helped a little..

Similar pages on a site
Hi I think it was at BrightonSEO where PI DataMetrics were talking about similar pages on a website can cause rankings to drop for your main page. This has got me thinking. if we have a category about jumpers so: example.com/jumpers but then our blog has a category about jumpers, where we write all about jumpers etc which creates a category page example.com/blog/category/jumpers, so these blog category pages have no index put on them to stop them ranking in Google? Thanks in Advance for any tips. Andy

Verifying hreview reviews
Hi all, I'm trying to get all the microformats done for reviews on a few sites, and would like clarification for aggregate reviews. Specifically, if I create an aggregate reviews page and put that a product or company has a 9 out of 10 rating, with 15 reviews (counts) am i correct in thinking that I then need to make sure that there are indeed 15 individual reviews on the same page, each listing their own score (votes) to ensure that the figures for the average come out right?

Can we use our existing site content on new site?
We added 1000s of pages unique content on our site and soon after google release penguin and we loose our ranking for major keywords and after months of efforts we decided to start a new site. If we use all the existing site content on new domain does google going to penalized the site for duplicate content or it will be treated as unique? Thanks

Site dropped after article submissions
I have a site about back pain. The name is lower back pain relief. It has a lot of content on how to treat back pain with natural remedies. I paid for botw.org and yahoo directories as well as submissions from submit edge. My site was doing well within a few months. I was floating around at the bottom of page two for "lower back pain relief" and lower back pain. I found out about Unique article wizard. I started using that to write and submit articles. Now, my website is not ranking anywhere. I submitted a request for reconsideration to Google. They said no manual action had been taken. The question: How long does this penalty last? Is that website toast now? I think it was penalized for using the anchor text too much or adding too many links at once. It has been penalized for about 6 weeks now.

Purchasing a site for a 301 Re-direct
Hi Mozzers, I have a question regarding a tactic I'm considering for a client. My client has a web hosting company and is ranking well for his keywords and in position 3 for his main term. There is a site available on flippa that is a keyword rich domain and has a decent link portfolio and domain authority and the price is attractive. I'm considering buying it to 301 it to his domain but I've never done this tactic before. Is this grey/black hat? Has anyone done this before and to what extent did it work? Thanks Bush

Index forum sites
Hi Moz Team, somehow the last question i raised a few days ago not only wasnt answered up until now, it was also completely deleted and the credit was not "refunded" - obviously there was some data loss involved with your restructuring. Can you check whether you still find the last question and answer it quickly? I need the answer 🙂 Here is one more question: I bought a website that has a huge forum, loads of pages with user generated content. Overall around 500.000 Threads with 9 Million comments. The complete forum is noindex/nofollow when i bought the site, now i am thinking about what is the best way to unleash the potential. The current system is vBulletin 3.6.10. a) Shall i first do an update of vbulletin to version 4 and use the vSEO tool to make the URLs clean, more user and search engine friendly before i switch to index/follow? b) would you recommend to have the forum in the folder structure or on a subdomain? As far as i know subdomain does take lesser strenght from the TLD, however, it is safer because the subdomain is seen as a separate entity from the regular TLD. Having it in he folder makes it easiert to pass strenght from the TLD to the forum, however, it puts my TLD at risk c) Would you release all forum sites at once or section by section? I think section by section looks rather unnatural not only to search engines but also to users, however, i am afraid of blasting more than a millionpages into the index at once. d) Would you index the first page of a threat or all pages of a threat? I fear duplicate content as the different pages of the threat contain different body content but the same Title and possibly the same h1. Looking forward to hear from you soon! Best Fabian
