Why are inbound links not showing up?
-
I'm new to SEOmoz but have a question regarding inbound links that I don't see posted in the forum.
In order to become more familiar with SEOmoz tools, I've been checking out sites that friends and family members have created as practice. Things have been going really smooth until I came across a 2+ year old page that should have included an inbound link from wsj.com but said link is not appearing in OSE for this page.
Background: A friend of mine has a (basically) defunct blog that had a pretty well trafficked posting in 2009. However, when I use OSE to check out both the domain and page inbound links, I don't see the aforementioned inbound link from wsj.com.
Why is that? Or, it's insanely late - am I missing something?
Friend's blog posting:
http://bcclist.com/2009/04/21/craigslist-killer-megan-philipcom-removed/
WSJ posting with a link to my friend's blog (4th paragraph...anchor text = "taken down"):
http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2009/04/21/who-is-megan-mcallister/
No rush. Again, I'm doing this as practice and being new to the site, I figure I'm overlooking something. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Should I suggest my friend build a few links on his blog to the WSJ posting in question?
No. If he did then it becomes more of a link exchange which is not the desired outcome.
Or, does building links to the page mean that he needs to create a blog elsewhere, make content relevant to Megan McAllister, and build links to the WSJ posting?
Most of the time you want all the links you build to be pointed at your site. An undiscovered link from the WSJ is a reason for an exception. You don't want to build a new blog for this purpose as that would be manipulative. Instead, locate other sites which may be interested in this article and let them know about it so they may link to it.
One final note. Performing these steps will help the SEOmoz crawler locate the article, but Google already has the page indexed. If you search Google.com for "who is megan mcallister" you will notice the page is the second result.

That (act like a web crawler and see if you can get to the link) is great advice. Thank you!
I may need to apologize in advance for this question but...

Hi ICM,
Your question is quite logical. There are two possibilities:
1. (Less Likely) There is an issue with the Linkscape Index where it missed this record. You can submit this example to help@seomoz.org and request the issue be investigated.
2. (More Likely) The link is buried too deep. The WSJ is an outstanding site from which to earn a link. Even the top ranked sites have a limit to how deep you can travel before running out of juice. There are links on DMOZ, for example, which are not indexed because they are simply buried too deep.
Question for you - If you go to the main page wsj.com, how many clicks would it take you to open the page? Don't use the site's search function, but instead move through the site the way a web crawler would, by clicking links.
From the home page I went to the blog page. From there I am stuck. I tried the sitemap but could not locate a link to the archives. There is a section at the bottom of the blog page titled WSJ Blog Archive but I was unable to locate any helpful link. There is an alphabetical index on the page and I tried "W" for the article title as well as "M" for Megan McAllister. Neither were helpful.
I am not a savvy user of the WSJ site so perhaps I am missing something. Otherwise it is possible the archive section from 2009 is not reachable via links in which case that would be the problem. If that is the case, you can help resolve the issue by building links to the page which could then be discovered on a future crawl.

Open Site Explorer and link numbers
I know this question has been asked many times in this forum but I still can't work it out. Why does this link: http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?page=1&site=www.bookpal.com.au&sort=page_authority&filter=&source=external&target=subdomain&group=0 Which is showing all links, external, to pages "on this sub domain" show 1,935 external links but this link: http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?page=1&site=www.bookpal.com.au&sort=page_authority&filter=follow&source=external&target=subdomain&group=0 which is exactly the same but this time shoing followed + 301 links, says "showing 1 - 50 external links) but won't show the total links (and I know the mouse-over on the question mark says it's won't show the total links, but I don't understand why it can't show the total links when it could show the total links when I requested to see "all links" instead of just "followed+301" links.) but it actually lists 700 links (14 pages, 50 results each page). I know the link list is limited to 25 links per domain but then it means you can NEVER know the total link count unless you download the full report. This makes using OSE to know numbers of links (internal, external, or otherwise) impossible. And if anyone uses the API, why the API (external+follow) returns 1,451 links? I'm sure it's an ongoing issue with people trying to get their head around all of this and I've never really been able to. Any insight would be much appreciated!

One Follow Link from each subdomain/domain best for SEO?
Hi there, we have a lot of customers linking to our homepage from a subdomain of our domain or from an external domain. From SEO point of view is it best that they all only have one DoFollow Link and the rest of the links are NoFollow? Or does this have no matter at all? The problem is that we have like 900.000 links but only from round about 1000 different root domains. If we put like half of the links on NoFollow our ratio of links/ different root domains gets better. Thanks for answering! Sebastian

How do I get a link in my blog bio signature on my Youmoz posts?
I've done several Youmoz posts and only recently noticed for some reason that other authors have included author links and links to their websites in their bio section at the end. I edited mine with a full URL but it only shows up as text. No editor there when you edit your profile so no way of adding a link. Anyone know how this is done?

Inbound Link Discrepancy: Campaign vs Open Site Explorer
Hello, I am getting starkly different inbound link amounts from Open Site Explorer and my Campaigns tab. Domain 1
Moz Pro | | truckguy77
Campaigns: Total links = 10,895,942 Open Site Explorer - Links = 224,000 Domain 2
Campaigns: Total links = 25,670,287
Open Site Explorer - Links = 157,000 Why would these be so different? For reference, the "Historical Domain Analysis" shows these sites getting exponentially more links starting in February. This is of concern to me. I didn't do anything different in February to get so many more links (especially not in the millions). If anything, I am hoping the "Campaigns" section is simply wrong about this.0 -
Discrepancies in link reports from SEOMoz and OSE
Hello, I am trying to understand the link profile of my site. In the competitive analysis from SEOMoz, it shows 22K+ of links, with about 900+ being external followed links and 800+ internal. Webmaster tools shows a similar number of external followed links, but the link report from OSE only shows about 150 external followed links. This brings up several questions: Where is this 22K total links coming from? Why is there such a difference in the SEOMoz competitive analysis and the OSE report? Why does the OSE report show some links as not followed, while Webmaster tools lists them as followed? Am new to the off-page aspects of SEO, and I have to say the discrepancy in data from different tools is by far the most challenging thing for me. Would welcome general advice on this topic as well. Thank you!

Best way to count number of inbound links to a subfolder?
What's the best way to count and track the number of inbound links to a subfolder like http://www.domain.com/folder ? I've tried using open site explorer but I can't seem to get it to show just inbound links for things under a subfolder. i.e. links to domain.com/folder domain.com/folder/subfolder etc. Thanks!
