Keyword Strategy for an E-Commerce Site
-
I've seen this touched on in other posts but have read conflicting answers and am hoping to get some clarification. What should my keyword strategy be for an e-commerce site in an industry that has moderate to high competition for it's short-tail keyword phrases?
Should I try to optimize my homepage for the highly competitive, short-tail keywords, while going after the long-tail, and less competitive (but less traffic, too) on my product pages? What's a good rule of thumb as far as the number of keyword phrases to target per product?
Thank you

By SEA I mean paid search in general.
I would pick Google AdWords and use search query reports combined with conversion data.
-
Rick, by SEA I'm assuming you mean Adwords, right?

Thanks, Ryan.

"It is challenging enough to climb to #1 for an exact keyword or phrase. The next challenge would be to rank for slight variations of that phrase such as the plural version or a more clarified version."
To find out which keyword you should start with, use Google AdWords and an unlimited budget to find out exact search volumes for a list of possible keywords.

In my opinion you should be testing keywords with SEA first to find out which words are the best in terms of 'search volume' and 'revenue'.
For example: for our own webshop I se-up a list with keywords I thought that would work. After that I tested them using Google AdWords. I also found out exact search volumes, which no other tool will tell you. When my results were significant, I picked the combinations te optimize using SEO.
Another advantage of SEA is that you can test several different ads. This way you can test several styles and phrases to find out what works best. This will learn you what to use in your SEO descriptions (and titles).

In a competitive market you should only target one keyword per page. Once you earn the # 1 ranking for your target keyword, then you can consider broadening your reach. Until then, you are climbing the ranking mountain. By adding additional keywords you are weighing yourself down and making it harder to make that climb.
Try searching Google.com for "sacramento real estate" and comparing the results to "sacramento california real estate". Intuitively you would expect the results to be the same, right? They are not.
Now try again searching for "childrens book" and compare the results to "childrens books". Again, the results are different.
It is challenging enough to climb to #1 for an exact keyword or phrase. The next challenge would be to rank for slight variations of that phrase such as the plural version or a more clarified version.

Authority site targeting multiple similar keywords
Hi! I found a niche I'd really like to work on. I was initially targeting a longtail keyword but there are so many available for this niche I decided to just make an authority site instead. My plan is to have multiple pages with each page targeting a separate long tail keyword in the niche. There's probably going to be over a 100. Let's say for example it's an organic gardening niche. The website will be setup for the entire niche and the page titles will be structured as such: Best Organic Gardening Soils Best Organic Gardening Tools Best Organic Gardening Seeds I'd prefer it to be setup this way so I can target traffic for the term with and without "best". I'm wondering if this sounds a bit spammy or is acceptable? Any other ideas as far as targeting similar longtail keywords in the same niche on a single site? Thanks so much!

How do you check keyword rankings for your sites?
The other day I used Rank Tracker form SEO PowerSuite and SEO small tools ranking checker http://smallseotools.com/keyword-position/ to check a keyword ranking. Both said that my clients keyword is not in top 50, but when I used Rank Tracker from Moz.com it showed that my client's keyword ranks #30 ! What's the tool that works for you all the time and is 100% reliable?

Identifying Keywords - Longtail
I need some clarification as to how exactly keywords work. I learned that I should focus on more specifically targeted long-tail keywords. However I am uncertain of how this actually works. Say I decide to use the longtail keyword "online dyslexia test for children". Will my page only be found by people when they enter that exact search term or will it also be found when people search for any of the other terms containing the same words? For example like all the phrases below: free online dyslexia test

how do you test for dyslexia in children Also if I have a page that I optimize for "online dyslexia test free" can I create another page for "free dyslexia test online" or will this be creating competition? In other words are these both unique keywords that will independently rank. Last question about keywords is are they still important and what is the search volume you should be targeting with your keywords. (Allot of my long tail keywords only have around 20 monthly US searches) Thanks! Joy0 -
Keyword difficulty report - am I stupid??
Hi, Im a programmer but SEO newbie and I am trying out Moz Pro. To be honest I feel really disheartened right now, I find the world of SEO very difficult and full of conflicting information. Anyway, I am trying to get my head around the Keyword difficulty tool in order to determine what keyword I want to go after and what I would need to do in order to outrank the competitors. The website with the highest PA, most external links to the domain (4000 versus around 80-90), the most linking root domain and the best on page optimasations ranks nr 5. The website that ranks 1 is the only one with good social signals. All of the websites has the keyword in the page title. What am I missing? This makes no sense to me. Is this Keyword tool reliable? VERY grateful for any help from you guys.. /Emma

Where to start with keyword research for a telecom company?
Hey, I'm a brand's person with no SEO experience, yet I'm in a position where I have to carry out an SEO audit of our telecom company's website. Though our website is up and running for some years now, nobody bothered to undertake keyword research. From the little I've read over months on SEOmoz, I've just done the following: took out keywords bringing organic traffic on to our website and checked our rankings for those keywords on major search engines. My observation is that most of these words are long-tail keywords. Since we only have product/service information related to our offerings, most of the head terms we've used for packages/offers/services pages are branded keywords. My understanding is that we need to rank top for our branded keywords (a must) and try to rank as high as possible for long tail. In addition, we can use those keywords in our copy so that the right page ranks top for the respective keyword. Am I missing anything here? What else do I need to do?

How reliable is GWT's keyword data & what is the most accurate way of determining keywords you currently rank for?
I have been monitoring the query data (keywords, average position, CTR, etc.) in GWT, but sometimes the ranking data seems off. I filter the dates for the past week, so it is the most recent. I manually check some of the rankings and they are way off. Does anyone have feedback on this? If you have access to multiple domain data, that would be great. What is the most accurate way of determining keywords you currently rank for? I have also used keywordspy, and that is off too!
