Question regarding back link analysis and anchor text
-
Hello,
I am looking at my competitors back link analysis and comparing a range of link based metrics from the top 10 SERPS. I am then putting this data into excel and comparing our back link profiles.
When looking at the anchor text distribution i am not sure whether to look at exact match anchor or phrase match anchor. For example, one of the companies I am looking at holds positions 3 and 4 in the SERPS. Looking at their linking profile I can see that only 1.7% of their links use the exact match anchor 'widget'.
Looking at their phrase match anchor is an entirely different story, 93.5% of anchor links contain 'widget' somewhere. i.e. 'cheap widgets', 'widget sale', 'buy widgets at www.examplewidget.co.uk' etc.
Obviously their exact match and phrase match anchor distribution tell a completely different story. THIS IS TRUE FOR MANY OF THE TOP 10 SERPS. Therefore, should I be looking at phrase match anchors instead of exact?
Side note: would people recommend targeting anchors with 'brandname widget' based on predictions of Google giving weighted anchor more weight.
Robert.

As with the panel, I would look at phrase also. Exact is too narrow, and you never want to get all your anchor as exact anyway as this looks a bit manipulated.
Put those broad phrases into Google's keyword tools and see where the most hits comes from and move forward from there.

Observe your natural link profile and you will notice people don't always choose to use exact match anchor text - in fact that's pretty rare when it happens. Google knows this and if you stick to an exact match you will create a suspicious backlink profile which would bite you back later on. My recommendation is to diversify anchor text and mix it with brand and variation of the phrase.
Example:
exact match
brand exact match
exact match brand
partial match
exact match: www. url. cometc.

You shuld try to match phrase.

Sudden and dramatic decrease in External Followed Links and Total External Links
I'm not sure how or why this has happened but from a span of a week my client's site went from 518 total external links to 97. I also saw a dramatic decrease in traffic for that week as well. I'm new to the SEO game but I have not made any changes to their content other than importing old blog posts that did not get migrated to their new host. Any thoughts? www.cobbcountyattorneys.com Thanks! JC

Question about the Playback Locations report in YouTube Analytics
We have several hundred YouTube videos. In the Playback Report section in YouTube analytics, I can see a list of sites where people have viewed our videos. Some of the sites listed are competitors. The report does not show the URL of the page where the video is embedded. Is there a way to find this information? I have already tried using Google to search for the URL, but I'm thinking this isn't going to search the source code and the video URL isn't going to appear on the page anywhere. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi, Not sure if someone can help me out. OSE only show the best mozrank data but i might have some links under that benchmark. Therefore anybody with a Majestic account that can filter new links from April 2012 to date. Payment not a problem. WMTools isnt showing data that i expected, so maybe its not there. Need a secondary opinion of the data from another source. Ive contacted some SEOmoz Recommended Companies...no response. Clearly have better things to do maybe.

C Block Links in Open Explorer
Hi there, Wondering if anyone can help me with understanding the advanced reports in Open Explorer. I'm looking to create a list of competitors links to go after but don't want to create loads of links from the same c blocks for blog posts, articles etc. In open explorer it says my competitor has 451 linking C Blocks but when i download csv's using advanced reports with the filter of 'links that come from the same C block', the csv only has 26 links. The same happened with the filter 'from the same ip address'. How can i download and analyse the links so I can see all the linking C blocks and know which sites I want to use and which ones I want to avoid? Thanks, Ross

Business Directories and Spammy Link Profile
Hi, have been reading a lot about submissions to directories and posting spamming blogs and forums and how they're a bad idea, saw a great post on it by Rand in a white board Friday lecture, the only thing is I've been analysing a company and that appears to be what makes up its entire link profile, all the links point to their home page with their primary phrase as the anchor text. Just wondered how a company with some 4k links the majority being follows, hasn't been penalised for what are a really bad set of back links. Should add that this is an insurance company, they're no light weights in their industry but certainly not one of the big boys. Thanks, Lee Example here

Why are links not being added to my Domain Authority
I have just compared my domain authority with competitors and I can see that they are outscoring me on links from YouTube etc. Even though I have same set-up with regard YouTube and Squidoo etc and am also featured on Dmoz... these are not being added to my domain authority. Any ideas?
