Duplicate content? Not sure.
-
Good news! I have my first real SEO gig and now I have to be able to actually deliver. I'm up for it but I want to be sure I'm seeing what I think I am before suggesting any changes. I'm working my way throught Danny Dover's excellent book SEO Secrets and learning tons!
To see if there is duplicate content on the site, I've taken a sentence from one of the pages on the site and searched for it: i.e., site:storybooksforhealing.com "Some of the most quiet moments are often the most difficult after a loss. Mornings, late nights, time alone."
The SERPs show 7 pages that have this text on it. It seems like this is duplicate content, right?
This is a Wordpress website so what's happening is the actual page is here: www.storybooksforhealing.com/publish-cup-of-joy/ but there are several archive pages that show excerpts of this text, too.
If this is duplicate content (first question) then how would I go about remedying it? Should I set the canonical reference to /publish-cup-of-joy page?
Thank you for being patient with my NOOB questions.

Robert, thanks again for your patience and expertise. I think I'm clearer now. As long as these aren't considered duplicates, I'm happy. Thanks for the tip on All In One SEO plugin to not index the archive pages. I'll certainly get in there and do that.
Right now, I"m just trying to identify the issues my client needs to address and not make too many changes to things until we've had the opportunity to go over them together.
Your insight and instructions have been most helpful.
Thank you!!!!

You are being perfectly clear and these, in my opinion, are not duplicate content and I will endeavor to show you how I drew that conclusion:
First, in looking at your code, you have a feed that is throwing up the blog from 8/19 that has the above quote in it. That is why it shows on your home page.
On the next couple of pages they are:
story....com/tag/mugs title tag is mugs archivestory....com/tag/publishing title tag is publishing archive
story...com/tag/photo - photo archive
story...com/tag/memory - memory archive
then the post itself: http://www.storybooksforhealing.com/publish-cup-of-joy/
**then the blog pulled to the home page. **
So, your issue is really not one of duplicate content, per se. But, there is a way to fix it.
Since most of these are archives, go into all in one SEO (this is in your WordPress dashboard), Plugins (Yes it is there, I see it
You will see All In One SEO (I have attached screenshots to assist you)
The first image is just the top of All in one SEO, the second is scrolling down and the third is the one where you will see Use noindex for Archives:, No noindex Tag Archives:
Check each box.
Now, note that if you go do a Site: again it will still be there and you will need to give it time to fall away. You could likely resubmit the sitemap, etc. but don't need to. Just wait. This way Google will not index these and you will not have duplicate content issues. (I don't think you would have had an issue with it, but this will keep it clean for you.)
All the best,

Robert, thank you for responding so thoroughly. I'll definitely look into each of the items you wrote about. I still have my lingering question that I started with, however.
Is what I'm seeing when I do this Google search:
site:storybooksforhealing.com "Some of the most quiet moments are often the most difficult after a loss. Mornings, late nights, time alone."
The resulting list has 7 entries. Aren't these duplicates? Shouldn't I get rid of them somehow? Or are you saying the issues that the meta descriptions are the problem? I don't understand why the meta descriptions you refer to in your post above would be causing the duplicates to appear in the SERP.
Some of the pages listed are category pages or tag pages that are just listing all posts related to a category or tag. There is still only one unique post but it's getting replicated on the category or tag archive pages. Should these be considered duplicate pages?
I'm sorry for the confusion. I wish I could be clearer in how I'm presenting the problem to you.

Christi,
I think you have your meta description set site wide in WP. You need to change that first. Then, I think you are also putting a meta description in on each page so, when you try to use mozbar for page elements, it has none as a default as it is reading two.
Go into your WP dashboard (this will depend a bit on what plugins you are using) and under settings, look for All in one SEO, or Yoast SEO for wordpress, etc. If something else, let us know.
Here is a link for optimizing Yoast (this is one a lot of people use) meta description.
For All in one SEO here is their main page. If you fix that, I think you will be on the way. Also on the mozbar, when you click on the bookmark, the drop down has a highlighter for links. click on it. At the bottom of that will be a space where you can put in keywords and hit highlite and you will see the keywords. I put in "Some of the most quiet moments are" and nothing highlighted. I then picked a phrase I saw a couple of times "Start to Finish Guide." it showed up in the content and as anchor text. So, I am now 99% sure this is the issue.
If still having trouble, let us know.

Rel canonical it. That's what it was made for. Watch the master Matt Cutts' slideshow: http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/canonical-link-tag/

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I think the problem is that Wordpress (in this case) is taking the excerpt from the main page /publish-cup-of-joy/ and presenting it on other pages along with many other excerpts from other pages on the site. I think the content really only exists on that one page but is being presented in different ways and with different URLs depending on whether you select a category to show all related posts for a category or if you select a tag to show all posts with a certain tag, etc.
It may be that I just need to point all archive pages to one specific page on the website instead of letting the search engine index every archive page.
I'm just not confident about that approach so am looking for direction in that regard.
Thanks again for responding!

All of those occurrences are part of a marketing piece referencing a coffee cup. Due to the structure of the content, you are probably going to have to rewrite that piece. So, that will delete this exact phrase, but create a new one.
I would suggest not using a piece of the content from that article on every page of the website, and instead use a summary piece to describe the coffee cup. Not only will improve your click thrus, but you won't make people read something so depressing so often

Ecommerce product page duplicate content
Hi, I know this topic has been covered in the past but I haven't been able to find the answers to this specific thing. So let's say on a website, all the product pages contain partial duplicate content - i.e. this could be delivery options or returning policy etc. Would this be classed as duplicate content? Or is this something that you would not get concerned about if it's let's say 5-10% of the content on the page? Or if you think this is something you'd take into consideration, how would you fix it? Thank you!

Duplicate products - is this fix acceptable?
Hey Mozzers, Questions around this have been asked time and time again. But i have a specific example I would like some advice on. I have 2 products, Product 1: https://goo.gl/Gzo1WC
On-Page Optimization | | ATP
Product 2: https://goo.gl/VbrHQJ As you can see, the products are almost identical bar some technical specifications. The owner of the business wants them listing as 2 products, combining them into a single listing with configurable options is not an option. As such I have simply made one a canonical of the other. Whilst not ideal this seems to be the best "SEO" fix. Option 2: My second option is to rewrite the descriptions to they are different - not too hard on this product and a future options when i have more time, however.... I am presented with a similar problem for another product where there are 23 versions of the same product, i cannot rewrite the same info this many times. They are different sizes, ranges, capacities, resolutions and accuracies and must be listed separately but contain all the same features and basic product information. The basic info is too important not to talk about, and talking about all the technical specs would be too much and teaching the customers likely to buy them to suck eggs. As such I have taken the 23 products and broken them down into 5 similar groups of 2 to 6 products. I have then picked 1 product from each group and written a unique description and changed all similar products in its group to match choosing 1product in each group as the canonical for all the others. So 23 same products become 5 unique products with 18 duplicated products pointing to them as canonicals. Any product pointing to another only differs in technical info, 95% of the page is the same. Whilst obviously not ideal, Is this an acceptable use of canonicals?0 -
How do I fix duplicate page issue on Shopify with duplicate products because of collections.
I'm working with a new client with a site built on Shopify. Most of their products appear in four collections. This is creating a duplicate content challenge for us. Can anyone suggest specific code to add to resolve this problem. I'm also interested in other ideas solutions, such as "don't use collections" if that's the best approach. I appreciate your insights. Thank you!

Is it better to create more pages of content or expand on current pages of content?
I am assuming that one way of improving the rankings of current pages will be to create more content on the keywords used... should this be an expansion of the content on current pages I am optimising for a keyword or is it better to keep creating new pages and if we are creating new pages is it best to use an extension of the keyword on the new page – for example if we are optimising one page for ‘does voltage optimisation work’ would it then be worth creating a page optimised for ‘does voltage optimisation work in hotels’ for example and so on? I am guessing maybe both might help, this is just a question I have had from one of my clients.

Duplicate Page Titles and Duplicate Content
I've been a Pro Member for nearly a year and I am bound and determined to finally clean up all the crawl errors on our site PracticeRange.com. We have 180 errors for Duplicate Page Titles and Duplicate Content. I fixed many of the pages that were product pages with duplicate content. Those product descriptions were edited and now have unique content. However, there remain plenty of the errors that are puzzling. Many of the errors reference the same pages, for example, the Home Page, Login Page and the Search page (our catalog pages).

In the case of the Catalog Page errors, these type pages would have the same title every time "Search" and the results differ according to category. http://www.practicerange.com/Search.aspx?m=6
http://www.practicerange.com/Search.aspx?m=15 If this is rel=canonical issue, how do I fix it on a search result page? I want each of the different category type pages to be indexed. One of them is no more important than the other. So how would I incorporate the rel=canonical? In the case of the Home Page errors, I'm really confused. I don't know where to start to fix these. They are the result of a 404 error that leads to the home page. Is the content of the 404 page the culprit since it contains a link to the home page? Here are examples of the Home Page type of crawl errors. http://www.practicerange.com/404.aspx?aspxerrorpath=/Golf-Training-Aids/Golf-Nets/~/Assets/ProductImages/products/Golf-Training-Aids/Rubber-Wooden-Tee-Holder.aspx http://www.practicerange.com/404.aspx?aspxerrorpath=/Golf-Training-Aids/Golf-Nets/~/Assets/ProductImages/products/Golf-Training-Aid/Impact-Bag.aspx Thanks , Alan WillsPracticeRange.com0 -
Duplicat contents on wordpress
I ran a crawl error and found that I have many pages with "tag" i.e. http://www.soobumimphotography.com/tag/70-200-2-8-is/ What's the best way to deal with this problems? Is it worth to visit all of them and fix? Delete? Could you give me some suggestions?

Is there any benefit in on-site duplicate content?
I have about 50 internal pages on my site that I want to add a "Do it yourself tutorial" to in an effort to build the quality of the pages. Is this going to de-value the content if I put it on all 50 pages? It's difficult to write similar content 50 different ways.

Filtered Navigation, Duplicate content issue on an Ecommerce Website
I have navigation that allows for multiple levels of filtering. What is the best way to prevent the search engine from seeing this duplicate content? Is it a big deal nowadays? I've read many articles and I'm not entirely clear on the solution. For example. You have a page that lists 12 products out of 100: companyname.com/productcategory/page1.htm And then you filter these products: companyname.com/productcategory/filters/page1.htm The filtered page may or may not contain items from the original page, but does contain items that are in the unfiltered navigation pages. How do you help the search engine determine where it should crawl and index the page that contains these products? I can't use rel=canonical, because the exact set of products on the filtered page may not be on any other unfiltered pages. What about robots.txt to block all the filtered pages? Will that also stop pagerank from flowing? What about the meta noindex tag on the filitered pages? I have also considered removing filters entirely, but I'm not sure if sacrificing usability is worth it in order to remove duplicate content. I've read a bunch of blogs and articles, seen the whiteboard special on faceted navigation, but I'm still not clear on how to deal with this issue.
