Which domain should I use?
-
I own a couple domains that are specific to a product and would like to know which one folks on here recommend.
Primary Google Search Term Example: "Tax Bond"
Example Domain 1: www.taxbonds.net
Example Domain 2: www.tax-bond.net
I've done research on here before and have come to the conclusion that hyphenated domains aren't bad (no more than 2 hyphens though). So, do I go for the EXACT search term with the hyphen or do I go for the pluralized search term without the hyphen, even though most people will not add the "s" in the Google search?
Thanks, Alex

Hyphens work without problem and are not considered spammy, as long as other spam signals are low.
I just ranked a domain with two hyphens, from nowhere in the search engine positions, to positions 5 on page 2 in 6 days with as little as a dozen backlinks and 30 pages of good content, for a search volume of 100 000.That's on google.fr but it applies to google.com as well imho.
Check a simple search such as "Investment Banking" and see for yourself : how many domains on 1st page have hyphens ? I see "careers-in-finance.com" as #5. Matt Cutts once said "hyphens are treated as separators".
I would also suggest you to watch this video : Matt Cutts about branding versus keyword laden URLs : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAWFv43qubI&feature=related
However in the example, I would go for taxbond.net because it is simpler. And of course buy tax-bond and redirect. I would not buy the pluralized search though, as Google would always prefer the simpler version, all things equal.

Still i would go without hythens
Search engines will still be able to make out the words, and your conversion will be better.

I'd like to clarify a little bit. This is not our core site. Our core site is a branded domain (www.suretegrity.com). There are some individual products that i'm creating microsites for. I am not a fan of hyphenated domains either but these will not get put on the radio, or even get placed in much marketing material. It will be loaded with great content but the big difference here is just that the domain is now product specific. It's a search results only play.
-
hythens look spammy and hard to explain, just imaging a radio add calling out your domain with hythens
-
I agree, the ranking aspect isn't as important of consideration, but the CTR can be benefited from an exact match: http://searchenginewatch.com/article/2086693/Exact-Match-Domains-Can-Double-Clicks-on-PPC-Ads
-
I personally don't like hypens in domains but I imagine your choices here won't have very much difference in terms of your initial rankings. Just because you have the exact match domain doesn't mean you will rank well for the query of "Tax Bond" -- you will need to get links pointing to your site and optimize the content. The anchor text of these links will play a much larger role in getting the rankings you desire than the domain itself. While the domain is pretty clutch, it's a small part of the important aspects that you need to focus on to rank well.
Does that answer your question?
-
The search volumes look about the same for either one (currently 110-74), and the difficulty level is about the same for either phrase. So, I would choose the top one since it would be easier for a customer to just type in if they recommend it to a friend.

Hundreds of Subdomains under a powerful domain
Hello, I own a domain FeedsPortal - com As you can see from the link profile, it has some fantastic referring domains and links. Because of this, it has a DA of 86, with a good CF/TF. The problem is that nearly all of these powerful links are for the sub domains under the main domain. For example, it has a link on this page on MSN... https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/offbeat/finland-home-of-the-dollar103000-speeding-ticket/ar-AA9GA9i?ocid=ansAtlantic11 On this MSN article, it has a link to http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/TheAtlantic/~3/PK4bw0Tkkps/story01.htm (a link under Google.com), which then forwards to my domain under a sub domain http://theatlantic.feedsportal.com/c/34375/f/..... I have many hundreds of sub domains like this. I have a feeling redirecting all non-existent sub domains to the homepage would be a bad idea for SEO. Does anyone else see of a way to do this without harming my SEO? I suppose the only way to do it properly would be to write articles about each subdomain. For example, http://theatlantic.feedsportal.com, write an article about The Atlantic, then forward all traffic meant for theatlantic.feedsportal.com to feedsportal.com/10-reasons-why-the-atlantic-is-great/ Does anyone else have an idea of how to at least get a list of the non-existant sub domains that have links so I can maybe create articles for each sub domain? Or is there a simpler way to do this. Thanks!

Domain Forwarding - SEO Impacts?
I have a site that has been active for years - thinkbiglearnsmart.com. Awhile ago I had purchased about 50 domain names that were relevant to my company. I still have those urls and would like to use them to point to different pages on my site - just because they have good key words in the URLs. For example - one is dreamweavertrainingclassesonlinelive.com. Currently they are all redirecting to my homepage. A. is that hurting me? B. I would like to redirect to the more relevant page. ie the page dedicated to Dreamweaver training (http://thinkbiglearnsmart.com/dreamweaver-creative-cloud-training-course/ ) Will this hurt my Dreamweaver keyword for example because there is already a 301 redirect on that page from a very old Dreamweaver link which was something like thinkbiglearnsmart.com/dreamweaver C. On my hosting account where I can select where the URL forwards to - it has an option for "Location forwarding" and "Frame forwarding" - currently they are set to Frame forwarding - which one is best? Any help is much appreciated!!! Thank you!

Does it make sense to buy a domain to be used in a year or so?
Hi guys We all know domain age is a big win in domain authority, although I am thinking - does it make sense to buy a domain to be used later on for one of our future product lines? We can publish some content on it, link it from a few sites, however use it heavily after a year? All help will be much appreciated! Lily

Subdomain and domain authority
I have Domain A (main content site, lots of content), with a domain authority of 91, and Domain B (blog of the first site, lots of content), with a domain authority of 82. I'm merging the blog into the main domain. Would it be best to keep it as a subdomain, or under a directory?

Using a 302 instead of a 301
I am trying to figure out the best way to garner the most amount of link value. We have an app that lives on a sub-domain ... For the purposes of this question, let's call it app.mydomain.com. We provide a service with this app that requires clients (with very high ranking websites) to link into app located on the sub-domain. Would I garner more authority if had the high ranking client website link into a url that wasn't a sub-domain and redirect it using a 302? For example: What if I created a 302 that was www.mydomain.com/app and have it redirected to the sub-domain version of app.mydomain.com? Additionally am I correct to assume that a 301 would merely pass that value to the sub domain and NOT provide much value to the root?

Change of domain procedure
Hi Guys, I have been tasked with conducting a change of domain for our company website. The website will be exactly the same, just change from www.jamesburfield.co.uk to www.burfieldcreative.co.uk. This was attempted before but my boss got cold feet and switched back after he saw a drop in rankings. (He put in the redirects and went through the change of domain procedure with google). I have told him that I think its possible with minimal disruption and we have agreed even with some disruption it will better in the long run for the company. Here is the process I intend to follow: 1. Copy and upload site to new domain 2. Redirect all pages with a wildcard or individually - possibly drop the www also 3. Follow the change of domain procedure in webmaster tools 4. Change the href of as many as possible back links to point at the new domain Please let me know your thoughts on my plan and if there is anything else I can do to ensure we maintain our rankings. Any help is appreciated as this is my suggestion and my neck is on the line! Thanks guys! Gareth

301 from penalized domain to new domain
I have a client whose site isn't necessarily penalized since they still show for many terms in the SERPS, however at one point they did an xrummer blast of 13,000 links for two anchor texts they were trying to rank for. They have purchased a new domain and have gone white hat and want to 301 some of the old site to the new purely for the users sake so past visitors still find them at t the new location. Will creating 301 redirects pass on to the new domain any bad Karma from the old one in Google's eyes? Thanks for the help.
