Title missing or empty on non-html downloadable files?
-
My site, www.cnccookbook.com, has lots of links for downloading files. These files are not html and they don't have .htm or .html extensions. So why does SEOMoz flag them for missing titles? Is there some other way these files should be handled for better SEO?
-
Hi Robert,
The SEOmoz crawler is set to ignore title tags on certain non-html files, such as pdfs. That said, there are still some errant file extensions out there that it will attempt to read. These are rare, but it does happen.
From an SEO point of view, there's nothing you really need to do with these files. If you wanted, you could place a rel="nofollow" on any link that you didn't want robots to crawl, or block them with robots.txt, just to be sure. But from a search point of view, Google and the other engines are pretty sophisticated with these types of files so this is probably unnecessary.
As a side note, Google is getting increasingly good at reading some types of non-html files, like pdfs, so it's often advantages to have these indexed.
If you are seeing errors in your campaign caused by these files, feel free to contact the help team (help@seomoz.org) and let them know.
Hope this helps! Best of luck.

I am not sure about SEOMoz, but other tools report this if the link is broken, once they can read the file they then work out it does not need a title.

Crawl report shows Title Element too long but they aren't
Hi, My latest crawl report says that I have a stack of pages with Title Element Too Long on them - e.g. Build My Ride - charity team building event with real purposeBuild My Ride - charity team building event with real purpose http://www.teamelevate.co.nz/events/build-my-ride1.html You can see that it shows the title element as doubled-up. When I look at the title element on the live page it is not double. GWT shows that there are no issues with long title elements. Any ideas anyone...? Chris

Crawl diagnostics incorrectly reporting duplicate page titles
Hi guys, I have a question in regards to the duplicate page titles being reported in my crawl diagnostics. It appears that the URL parameter "?ctm" is causing the crawler to think that duplicate pages exist. In GWT, we've specified to use the representative URL when that parameter is used. It appears to be working, since when I search site:http://www.causes.com/about?ctm=home, I am served a single search result for www.causes.com/about. That begs the question, why is the SEOMoz crawler saying there is duplicate page titles when Google isn't (doesn't appear under the HTML improvements for duplicate page titles)? A canonical URL is not used for this page so I'm assuming that may be one reason why. The only other thing I can think of is that Google's crawler is simply "smarter" than the Moz crawler (no offense, you guys put out an awesome product!). Any help is greatly appreciated and I'm looking forward to being an active participant in the Q&A community! Cheers, Brad

Domain.com and domain.com/index.html duplicate content in reports even with rewrite on
I have a site that was recently hit by the Google penguin update and dropped a page back. When running the site through seomoz tools, I keep getting duplicate content in the reports for domain.com and domain.com/index.html, even though I have a 301 rewrite condition. When I test the site, domain.com/index.html redirects to domain.com for all directories and root. I don't understand how my index page can still get flagged as duplicate content. I also have a redirect from domain.com to www.domain.com. Is there anything else I need to do or add to my htaccess file? Appreciate any clarification on this.

Crawl Diagnostics and missing meta tags on noindex blog pages
Hi Guys/Gals We do love the Crawl Diagnostics, but do find the missing meta tags ("Missing Meta Description" Tag in this case) somewhat spammy. We use the "All in One SEO Pack" for our blog and it does stick in noindex, follow (as it should) on the pages that is of no use to us. "2008/04/page/2/" and the likes. Maybe I'm wrong but should the Diagnostics tool not respect the noindex tag and just ignore any warnings, since it should really mean that these pages are NOT included in the search index. Meaning that the other meta tags are really useless. Any thoughts?

Why is Roger crawling pages that are disallowed in my robots.txt file?
I have specified the following in my robots.txt file: Disallow: /catalog/product_compare/ Yet Roger is crawling these pages = 1,357 errors. Is this a bug or am I missing something in my robots.txt file? Here's one of the URLs that Roger pulled: <colgroup><col width="312"></colgroup>
