A reasonably large ecommerce site I am working with has multiple duplicate content issues.
On 4 or 5 keyword domains related to site content the owners simply duplicated the home page with category links pushing visitors to the category pages of the main site.
There was no canonical URL instruction, so have set preferred url via webmaster tools but now need to code this into the website itself.
For a reasonably large ecommerce site, how would you approach that particular nest of troubles. That's even before we get to grips with the on page duplication and wrong keywords!

Thanks EGOL, that's in line with what I thought. One of them does produce a small flow of visitors. My inclination is to recommend editing the content on that satellite to reflect its keyword and only link in to the couple of relevant sub categories at the main site. All other non relevant content would be removed
The others I would redirect to the appropriate internal page of the website.

I would see how much human traffic is coming into those satellite sites. If very little I would redirect them to main site. Then I would place all of my efforts into the main site.
The owners might not like that recommendation because they thought making the satellite sites was a kickass idea. But if you show they are producing zero traffic or that the traffic bounces off of main site then the sale will be much easier.

Duplicate Content/Similar Pages
Hello, I'm working on our site and I'm coming into an issue with the duplicate content. Our company manufactures heavy-duty mobile lifts. We have two main lifts. They are the same, except for capacity. We want to keep the format similar and the owner of the company wants each lift to have its own dedicated page. Obviously, since the layout is the same and content is similar I'm getting the duplicate content issue. We also have a section of our accessories and a section of our parts. Each of these sections have individual pages for the accessory/part. Again, the pages are laid out in a similar fashion to keep the cohesiveness, and the content is different, however similar. Meaning different terminology, part numbers, stock numbers, etc., but the overall wording is similar. What can I do to combat these issues? I think our ratings are dropping due to the duplicate content.

Duplicate content issue with Wordpress tags?
Would Google really discount duplicate content created by Wordpress tags? I find it hard to believe considering tags are on and indexed by default and the vast majority of users would not know to deindex them . . .

404 and Duplicate Content.
I just submitted my first campaign. And it's coming up with a LOT of errors. Many of them I feel are out of my control as we use a CMS for RV dealerships. But I have a couple of questions. I got a 404 error and SEO Moz tells me the link, but won't tell me where that link originated from, so I don't know where to go to fix it. I also got a lot of duplicate content, and it seems a lot of them are coming from "tags" on my blog. Is that something I should be concerned about? Duplicate content with same URL?
SEOmoz is saying that I have duplicate content on: http://www.XXXX.com/content.asp?ID=ID http://www.XXXX.com/CONTENT.ASP?ID=ID The only difference I see in the URL is that the "content.asp" is capitalized in the second URL. Should I be worried about this or is this an issue with the SEOmoz crawl? Thanks for any help. Mike

Duplicate Content - That Old Chestnut!!!
Hi Guys, Hope all is well, I have a question if I may? I have several articles which we have written and I want to try and find out the best way to post these but I have a number of concerns. I am hoping to use the content in an attempt to increase the Kudos of our site by providing quality content and hopefully receiving decent back links. 1. In terms of duplicate content should I only post it on one place or should I post the article in several places? Also where would you say the top 5 or 10 places would be? These are articles on XML, Social Media & Back Links. 2. Can I post the article on another blog or article directory and post it on my websites blog or is this a bad idea? Duplicate Page Content and Titles
A few weeks ago my error count went up for Duplicate Page Content and Titles. 4 errors in all. A week later the errors were gone... But now they are back. I made changes to the Webconfig over a month ago but nothing since. Duplicate content across multiple domains
I have come across a situation where we have discovered duplicate content between multiple domains. We have access to each domain and have recently within the past 2 weeks added a 301 redirect to redirect each page dynamically to the proper page on the desired domain. My question relates to the removal of these pages. There are thousands of these duplicate pages. I have gone back and looked at a number of these cached pages in google and have found that the cached pages that are roughly 30 days old or older. Will these pages ever get removed from google's index? Will the 301 redirect even be read by google to be redirected to the proper domain and page? If so when will that happen? Are we better off submitting a full site removal request of the sites that carries the duplicate content at this point? These smaller sites do bring traffic on their own but I'd rather not wait 3 months for the content to be removed since my assumption is that this content is competing with the main site. I suppose another option would be to include no cache meta tag for these pages. Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.
