Best Way To Host Images For Image Optimization
-
I need an image optimization expert to tell me whether or not we are hosting images properly for SEO. Currently, we upload all images to Picasa and then call them out with a webpart in our content management system. See example here - http://www.tennisnow.com/Photos/2011-BNP-Paribas-Open-Day-5.aspx
Here's an example of the url that is attached to each image - http://lh5.ggpht.com/_1Oyc-Zgkrpk/TX5H-Pfyd7I/AAAAAAAARbc/nG3Cw-G5tsY/s400/1215548409_FU9xA-L.jpg
We have a lot of images, and we've hosted them on Picasa for speed purposes based on a recommendation from our developer (makes the pages load faster).
I've read that Google can now factor page load time into its ranking parameters. We are not seeing the images from each photo gallery being indexed on images.google.com. We are torn. What should we do to rank for these images?

Hey Guillaume,
Thanks for pointing out the alt tags, can't believe I forgot to mention that (doh!).
Good points with how to address the speed issues.
Cheers,
Josh

Hi,
I totaly agree, you should also add content to the alt tag of the images. About the speed optimization, I would not only look into the images, but also look at the code of the page itself.
There are a lot of inline CSS and JavaScript that could be move to external files and you could also combine and minimize your external JavaScript and CSS files.
There is also this 28772 character long token generated by ASPX that take a while to be generated and loaded. You could also replace your menus by
There are a lot of improvement that could be done on your website that would make your website load faster and have greater effect than hosting your images elsewhere.
Best regards,

I will take a stab at it and someone more knowledgeable than me can correct me if I am wrong :).
I would host the pictures on your own server and address the speed issues with caching, compression, etc. As long as the pictures are optimized for the web correctly you can mitigate the cost in speed and gain the opportunity to be able to control your image optimization plan.
Right now your links point out and are not descriptive of the content at all. If they were hosted on your site you are referencing your own domain and can control the URL much easier. Instead of the link you currently have you could have a specific url that describes the picture (www.example.com/photos/Rafael-Nadal-wimbledon-2011.jpg). Please note that I am no tennis expert so this is just an example :). this would give you a descriptive url that points to your site, and by optimizing the alt and title tags you tell the search engines what your image is about. When those picture are indexed and show up in google or bing it is your site that gets the traffic and credit not a 3rd party host.
Hope that helps, personally as searching trends towards more visual cues I want to make sure that any pictures that are found of our products are optimized fully and point to our site.

What is the best way to resolve duplicate content issue
Hi I have a client whose site content has been scraped and used in numerous other sites. This is detrimental to ranking. One term we wish to rank for is nowhere. My question is this: what's the quickest way to resolve a duplicate content issue when other sites have stolen your content? I understand that maybe I should firstly contact these site owners and 'appeal to their better nature'. This will take time and they may not even comply. I've also considered rewriting our content. Again this takes time. Has anybody experienced this issue before? If so how did you come to a solution? Thanks in advance.

Keyword optimization of main keyword across site.
My site is optimized for keyword "payment gateway" but it seems for each keyword only one page should be optimized as per good SEO. So if I've a page about Paypal then how should I spread the keywords? Here the main will be Paypal and site keyword will be payment gateway. It means site should have more Paypal than payment gateway. But can payment gateway be in 3rd or 4th position in density? Similarly how should I create other pages? How search engines determine the site authority based on keyword? ( let us ignore the external backlinks, context of them and anchor texts).

Best way to do a 301 redirect when the incorrect page has rank and FB likes
Due to a site structural problem with our CMS we have alot of duplicate content pages (1 page, with multiple urls). We are in the process of setting up 301 redirects to correct the problem. Meanwhile; one of the pages with the "incorrect" URL happens to be the page google favors and also has about 100 FB "likes". The question is: Are we better off keeping the "incorrect" URL for that particular page and redirect the other url to it? Both have a page rank of 3. Thanks

On-Site Optimization and Repeat Customers
Hello, One of my clients has repeat customers. All of his surface level categories are optimized. None of his 2nd or 3rd level categories are optimized at all. Is there any harm in optimizing these 2nd or 3rd level categories. Is there any way it could cause a problem with repeat customers? I didn't think so but I want to make sure. Thanks!

This is a real dumb question about on page optimization
I've been reading the docs for using this site and am puzzled by the on page optimization reports, and the tactics for creating the reports. In no place can i find that you first must use the keywords you have identified to track in the campaign on pages on your web site. Am i missing something? From just reading how to do your campaign, it would appear that you never have to touch your pages with the keywords you want to track, all 500 of them for one page, if that's what you want to do. Not knowing how the application works, it is possible to imagine anything, including not needing to do the obvious steps of writing a well optimized page first. I want to presume that first you optimize your pages with the keywords you want to track, then go ahead and run your campaign. Although this is the obvious thing, I don't see that part of the seo puzzle being mentioned in any of the docs. Where do i hunt for that part of the equation?

Image files names - should each be different ?
Hi SEOs I have created a page on my website with a certain tutorial - let's say "How to change a tyre in your car". I have Grade A from On-page report using SEOmoz tool. I have put a relevant alt description for each photo I have put in that tutorial and I have used relevant keyword as a name for each image. So for example this would look like that: changing-tyre-1.jpg changing-tyre-2.jpg My question is should I name these file differently according to their content ? For example if on my photo there is some tool I have to use to change the tyre should the file have the name relevant to the subject of the article/tutorial on the page or to the content of the image ? Is that a stupid question ? Or am I getting too fussy ? Thanks
