Sudden Change In Indexed Pages
-
Every week I check the number of pages indexed by google using the "site:" function. I have set up a permanent redirect from all the non-www pages to www pages.
When I used to run the function for the:
non-www pages (i.e site:mysite.com), would have 12K results
www pages (i.e site:www.mysite.com) would have about 36K
The past few days, this has reversed! I get 12K for www pages, and 36K for non-www pages.
Things I have changed:
I have added canonical URL links in the header, all have www in the URL.
My questions:
Is this cause for concern?
Can anyone explain this to me?
-
Maybe Google includes all sub-domains. I just tested my site, and got the following results.
site:handsomeweb.com 340 results (all have www)
site:www.handsomeweb.com 231 results (all have www)
The difference is the first query includes pages located at:blog.handsomeweb.com

I don't get both resolving, and yes, I did set a preferred domain in my Google account.
Any other ideas?
-
Have you done preferred domain in Google?
I don't know how you could have done the 301's and still get both resolving. Have you run xenu or some other program to insure the 301s are there?
-
We did the 301 redirects from non-www to www when we launched the site.
I have another site that I have done a 301 from www to non-www, and you get 0 results when you search "site:www.mysite.com".
They are both on the same platform, which makes it more confusing!!!

I have looked at several of our sites and see no change in results for site:
You stated: **Things I have changed: **
I have added canonical URL links in the header, all have www in the URL.
I believe what is happening (assuming you changed the canonical URL prior to the change in results of site:) is the change is the result of the canonical application you have added. However, I am not sure how you could still have an aggregate of 48K pages, are you sure this is accurate?
If, you are showing 12K of www, and 36K of non www, I would guess that the 12K were duplicated within the 36K. Therefore, you would have only 36K pages on your site.
Typically, when we encounter a site that has both www and non-www we select a preferred domain in WMT and do the 301 redirect in .htaccess file. Once this is done, over a short period, we will have only what we have chosen as the preferred domain www or non www.
So, if we started with 1,000 pages of www and 2,000 of non www, then if preferred choice is non www. We will end up with 2,000 pages total.
My suggestion would be to go into WMT and select a preferred domain and do the 301 redirect in the .htaccess file. Once that is done, I believe your problem will be resolved. rel=canon will not accomplish this in and of itself. Give it a few weeks and check your results.

This is something I've been noticing greatly over the past few months. I was literally just about to post this question:
site: command, y u no accurate?!
I feel like the site:domain.com command used to be very accurate in showing you total pages indexed. Recently, I've seen wildly varied results returned.
Of course, it varies based upon the inclusion of "www.", but even without it, I've seen such results as anywhere from 193k to 8million pages... and everything in-between.
Why the variance? Has anyone else seen this recently?

Rel canonical tag from shopify page to wordpress site page
We have pages on our shopify site example - https://shop.example.com/collections/cast-aluminum-plaques/products/cast-aluminum-address-plaque That we want to put a rel canonical tag on to direct to our wordpress site page - https://www.example.com/aluminum-plaques/ We have links form the wordpress page to the shop page, and over time ahve found that google has ranked the shop pages over the wp pages, which we do not want. So we want to put rel canonical tags on the shop pages to say the wp page is the authority. I hope that makes sense, and I would appreciate your feeback and best solution. Thanks! Is that possible?

Moving html site to wordpress and 301 redirect from index.htm to index.php or just www.example.com

1 duplicate I have recently transfered my old html site to wordpress.
To keep the urls the same I am using a plugin which appends .htm at the end of each page. My old site home page was index.htm. I have created index.htm in wordpress as well but now there is a conflict of duplicate content. I am using latest post as my home page which is index.php Question 1.
Should I also use redirect 301 im htaccess file to transfer index.htm page authority (19) to www.example.com If yes, do I use
Redirect 301 /index.htm http://www.example.com/index.php
or
Redirect 301 /index.htm http://www.example.com Question 2
Should I change my "Home" menu link to http://www.example.com instead of http://www.example.com/index.htm that would fix the duplicate content, as indx.htm does not exist anymore. Is there a better option? Thanks0 -
301 Externally Linked, But Non-Producing Pages, To Productive Pages Needing Links?
I'm working on a site that has some non-productive pages without much of an upside potential, but that are linked-to externally. The site also has some productive pages, light in external links, in a somewhat related topic. What do you think of 301ing the non-productive pages with links to the productive pages without links in order to give them more external link love? Would it make much of a difference? Thanks... Will Using Attributes For Landing Pages In Magento Dilute Page Rank?
Hello Mozzers! We have an ecommerce site built on Magento. We would like to use attribute filters in our layered navigation for landing page purposes. Each page will have a unique URL, Meta Title and Meta Description. For example: URL: domain.com/art/abstract (category is Art, attribute is Abstract) Title: Abstract Art For Sale Meta: Blah Blah Blah Currently these attribute pages are not being indexed by google as they are set in google parameters. We would like to edit google parameters to start indexing some of the attribute filters that users search for, so they can be used as landing pages. Does anyone have experience with this? Is this a good idea? What are the consequences? Will this dilute Page Rank? Could this destroy the world? Cheers! MozAddict

SEO structure question: Better to add similar (but distinct) content to multiple unique pages or make one unique page?
Not sure which approach would be more SEO ranking friendly? As we are a music store, we do instrument repairs on all instruments. Currently, I don't have much of any content about our repairs on our website... so I'm considering a couple different approaches of adding this content: Let's take Trumpet Repair for example: 1. I can auto write to the HTML body (say, at the end of the body) of our 20 Trumpets (each having their own page) we have for sale on our site, the verbiage of all repairs, services, rates, and other repair related detail. In my mind, the effect of this may be that: This added information does uniquely pertain to Trumpets only (excludes all other instrument repair info), which Google likes... but it would be duplicate Trumpet repair information over 20 pages.... which Google may not like? 2. Or I could auto write the repair details to the Trumpet's Category Page - either in the Body, Header, or Footer. This definitely reduces the redundancy of the repeating Trumpet repair info per Trumpet page, but it also reduces each Trumpet pages content depth... so I'm not sure which out weighs the other? 3. Write it to both category page & individual pages? Possibly valuable because the information is anchoring all around itself and supporting... or is that super duplication? 4. Of course, create a category dedicated to repairs then add a subcategory for each instrument and have the repair info there be completely unique to that page...- then in the body of each 20 Trumpets, tag an internal link to Trumpet Repair? Any suggestions greatly appreciated? Thanks, Kevin

Dropped 50 places for Page Title Change
Hey Guys, I've got a keyword set that is really annoying me. You see on the 19th July I changed my page title for the home page to what I thought would be something more competitive and instead of climbing from rank 9/10 I dropped out of the top 50. So I waited 2 weeks to see if it changed and it just stayed out of the top 50. After two weeks I changed it back again and I've been out of the top 50 ever since. I havnt made any real significant changes to the site as I've held off waiting for the keyword ranking to return but I dont think it will. I was trying to improve the keyword phrase "bahamas all inclusive" for the website www.smallhope.com. I'd managed to get on to page 1 rank 9/10 depending. I changed the title; from "Bahamas All Inclusive - Andros Bahamas Hotel - Bahamas Vacation - Small Hope Bay Lodge All-Inclusive" to "Bahamas All Inclusive Vacation - Small Hope Bay Lodge All-Inclusive" This is really bad for us and I'm not sure what to do. I had a whole plan in place starting with the Title and moving on to the H1 tags, but now I'm not so sure. I've put everything on hold. If this was you what would you do to get back to page 1? Thanks, Adam

Should the sitemap include just menu pages or all pages site wide?
I have a Drupal site that utilizes Solr, with 10 menu pages and about 4,000 pages of content. Redoing a few things and we'll need to revamp the sitemap. Typically I'd jam all pages into a single sitemap and that's it, but post-Panda, should I do anything different?

Pop Up Pages Being Indexed, Seen As Duplicate Content
I offer users the opportunity to email and embed images from my website. (See this page http://www.andertoons.com/cartoon/6246/ and look under the large image for "Email to a Friend" and "Get Embed HTML" links.) But I'm seeing the ensuing pop-up pages (Ex: http://www.andertoons.com/embed/5231/?KeepThis=true&TB_iframe=true&height=370&width=700&modal=true and http://www.andertoons.com/email/6246/?KeepThis=true&TB_iframe=true&height=432&width=700&modal=true) showing up in Google. Even worse, I think they're seen as duplicate content. How should I deal with this?
