Renting Directory Listings

Is anyone aware of services that allow the renting of directory listings? Someone explained the concept to me and I am trying to find a good source for directory rental links.

Both Casey and Ryan have good points here. A slight clarification that Google doesn't like buying links for the purpose of passing page rank (which is the main reason it's done).

When you "purchase" a directory link, you are often paying for a limited time such as 1 year. In effect, you are renting the link for a year. Is this what you mean?
Be VERY careful paying for any directory links. Most directory links offer no value at all, and many are potentially harmful to your site.

I dont think I have ever heard of "renting" a directory listing, you can buy directory listings though which might be what they were talking about. This form of link building can be helpful in the right circumstance, but it certainly isn't worth paying money to buy a link from a directory. Plus buying links are against Google's TOS.
If you do end up creating directory links, just make sure that your doing so to related in topic directories.

Rss Directories Worth the time? If so Which ones?
All I could find was a bunch of ancient posts on RSS directories. Just getting a new site set up and I want it distributing content as far as possible all white hat. Are Rss directories even worth my time these days. I was thinking of submitting to the top 10. We blog about 2-10 posts per week. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

Making a custom web directory
I am wondering if it is beneficial to launch a social bookmarking website based on Semantic Scuttle [http://semanticscuttle.sourceforge.net/demo] in order to gain inbound links. For the sake of example, say my industry is ebooks. I would of course add links to all of my products to the site. In addition, I would want to add links to competitors products to the site to make the site actually useful and not look like spam. On the face of it, is this a good idea? Secondly, I of course wouldn't want to be helping out competitors, so would any of these actions be advisable? add nofollow links to all links except those pointing to my site. ads or featured listings pointing to my links. I make it so only voted on links are dofollow. Thus, competitors could actually get links from my site. Naturally, I would vote on all my submissions. The idea of the site would actually be to provide a meaningful service. Once it's done I would want to get people linking to it. Any advice? Thanks! Edit: I added scenario #3 which I think is probably the best option, if this is even a good idea. I would also make some static content to really make this a good resource!

Is it risky to be on too many .edu link lists?
I recently heard someone say that if your site is on a lot of link lists (example "Useful Links" pages) this can hurt you. How likely is a Google penalty if your site is listed on tons of .edu link lists?

Directory Submissions = Negative?
I see that a lot of SEO companies offer a large 5,000 directory submission package with slow, 160 day submissions. I don't mind spending the money to have this done, but my question is... would they help, or would they actually hurt my rankings? Since a lot of these directories are basically just copies of each other on different domains. As an added question, would it be worth submitting to all of the general directories on this list? http://www.seomoz.org/directories

Unable to build google local listings, are citations still useful?
Hello Google seems to be unhappy about letting us build google local profiles around our 'virtual locations, for each of which we have a dedicated page. We have approximately 100 'virtual locations' with addresses. I was wondering if, despite not being able to build google local profiles, it would still be worth it to build yahoo, bing, and utilize citation building services to each of those virtual locations. Would these citations in any way help bing or yahoo rank higher locally? Would the locally optimized city page rank higher as a result of all these citations? This is a service-industry based website btw.

Directories are Paid links right ?
How are directories ok for buying links ? How can the funds be claimed to be used to review your submission when everyone knows you are basically buying a link ? What experiences have you had god and bad with directories ? Is it a free for all any directory will do or should you be more selective in your approach. If so what are the signs to look out for on a top quality directory.

Help me understand the gap between DMOZ and the Google Directory?
I have seen other sites showing up in OSE with backlinks from both DMOZ and Google Directory. We are in DMOZ, and our backling is showing for that in OSE, but i don't understand how to get added to the Google directory? When i go to the appropriate category, and click "submit link" it just takes me back to DMOZ! Is there something i'm doing wrong here? This is the page we are on in DMOZ And this is the page i believe we should be on in the google directory As a side note, i would love to hear your opinions if this really even matters? does google really use it's own directory as part of its search algorithm?
