Duplicate content - what to do?
-
Hi,
We have a whole lot of articles on our site. In total 5232 actually.
The web crawler tells me that in the articles we have a lot of duplicate content. Which is sort of nonsense, since each article is unique. Ah, some might have some common paragraphs because they are recurring news about a weekly competition.
But, an example:
http://www.betxpert.com/artikler/bookmakere/brandvarme-ailton-snupper-topscorerprisen
AND
http://www.betxpert.com/artikler/bookmakere/opdaterede-odds-pa-sportschef-situationen-pa-vestegnen
These are "duplicate content", however the two article texts are not the same. The menu, and the widgets are all the same, but highly relevant to the article.
So what should I do? How can i rid myself of these errors?

So! Have now made some changes.
I have removed the large number of links at the bottom and a single widget on the right. It seems to have lowerede the level of noise on the page.
We brandish our articles with keywords (but mostly new ones since the feature is new) such that only relevant articles are linked (in a widget which appears when relevant articles are found).
This change should cut it, right?

Rasmus,
Your description and keywords tags are exactly the same on both pages.
The description should be a summary of the content of each individual page
If you fix that, it may go some way towards fixing the problem.
If that doesn't help, then consider adding more text to those stories
- say a little more about each competitor, or at least the leader or the top 3.
Another thing you could consider is using a different template for that type of page, so you don't add all that stuff under the HR tag, and maybe drop off something from the right column, so the page is a little bit shorter and the story will be a larger percentage of the text.
You also have a lot of inline javascript and a lot of external javascripts.
I don't know if the bots or the ranking algorithms care, but it would be a lot nicer if you consolidated some of that.
-
Hey Rasmus,
The menu, widgets e.t.c all count as part of content as they are page elements, so ofcourse they would be considered.
This situation is abit tricky, however if you think you can merge them do so, maybe add slightly more content to each page; otherwise do nothing.
Just make sure and see whether both pages are ranking for the appropriate keywords.
Thanks,
Vahe

That is almost duplicate content. The % of the unique content on the two pages you've posted as example is small - only the actual content is different - the rest of the site wide boxes and boiler plates are the same.
So matematicly the difference in those two pages is very small.
The good thing is that you have the article in a good real estate location on the page - amnd that is good.
If your "score" as far as page views, Bounce rate, time on page, loyality is good then no need to worry about the crawler telling you about the duplicate issue. if the Bounce rate, time on page etc doesn't look good then yes, you nee dot worry about it.
My suggestion will be to cut out some or most of the boiler plate boxes in your site structure - it doesn't help you, it doesn't help your readers but it dose harm you with all those links per page as far as number (% of links vs text) and to be honest I am not 100% sure it helps your users with that aggressive approach: a lot of options.
Also there is a good approach not to use the same target for the link in the article as it doesn't counts - only the first one is taken in consideration as far as anchor text - as far as seo. If it has a good CTR then keep it but remember that even if only one counts as sending SEO signal (anchor text and link love) it dose count as far as number of links per page.
The bottom line is that if you cut about 50% of the boiler plates in those pages you will gain a lot of advantages for both the SEO side and you would also help your users (usability, navigation etc).
You don't have to take my advice for granted - do this for some of the articles and monitor ctr, serps for them and so on to see the improvements.
Hope it helps. If it didn't hopefully someone else will also post an opinion

Duplicate Content and Other Issues from Blog Tags and Categories
I have recently taken over the maintenance/redesign of our website and after setting up Moz I see many errors:
On-Page Optimization | | jgoethert
Duplicate content
Missing descriptions
Duplicate titles
etc. All are related to blog categories and tags. My questions are: are these errors hurting us? Should I simply remove tags/categories from the sitemaps or bite the bullet and create content for every single category page? Our site is https://financiallysimple.com/ and we are using Yoast plugin in Wordpress (if that helps)2 -
How best to deal with internal duplicate content
hi having an issue with a client site and internal duplicate content. The client has a custom cms and when they post new content it can appear, in full, at two different urls on the site. Short of getting the client to move cms, which they won't do, I am trying to find an easy fix that they could do themselves. ideally they would add a canonical on one of the versions but the cms does allow them to view posts in html view, also would be a lot if messing about wth posting the page and then going back to the cms and adding the tag. the cms is unable to auto generate this either. The content editors are copywriters not programmers. Would there be a solution using wmt for this? They have the skill level to be able to add a url in wmt so im thinking that a stop gap solution could be to noindex one of the versions using the option in webmaster tools. Ongoing we will consult developers about modifying the cms but budgets are limited so looking for a cheap and quick solution to help until the new year. anyone know of a way other than wmt to block Google from seeing duplicate content. We can block Google from folders because only a small percentage of the content in the folder would be internally duplicate. would be very grateful for any suggestions anyone could offer. thanks.

Gallery system creates duplicates
Hi, Does anybody know what can I do with those “duplicate content pages”? 1/ home page shows 4 different urls with different parameters. Should I use meta-robots tag to eliminate it? Or block it in robots.txt? http://screencast.com/t/xqNiowCYBwgh 2/ Also, there are dozens of duplicates created by the “gallery system”. Like this: http://screencast.com/t/qTq4YERG All showing for the same url. There are multiple pages for each location. Some people told me that it's irrelevant for rankings anyway. I suggested getting rid of flash website alltogether and getting a smooth wordpress installation, but it's not an option. Can you please help me with it? Best Regards, JJ

Duplicate Content when Using "visibility classes" in responsive design layouts? - a SEO-Problem?
I have text in the right column of my responsive layout which will show up below the the principal content on small devices. To do this I use visibility classes for DIVs. So I have a DIV with with a unique style text that is visible only on large screen sizes. I copied the same text into another div which shows only up only on small devices while the other div will be hidden in this moment. Technically I have the same text twice on my page. So this might be duplicate content detected as SPAM? I'm concerned because hidden text on page via expand-collapsable textblocks will be read by bots and in my case they will detect it twice?Does anybody have experiences on this issue?bestHolger

Duplicate Content Issues with Forum
Hi Everyone, I just signed up last night and received the crawl stats for my site (ShapeFit.com). Since April of 2011, my site has been severely impacted by Google's Panda and Penguin algorithm updates and we have lost about 80% of our traffic during that time. I have been trying to follow the guidelines provided by Google to fix the issues and help recover but nothing seems to be working. The majority of my time has been invested in trying to add content to "thin" pages on the site and filing DMCA notices for copyright infringement issues. Since this work has not produced any noticeable recovery, I decided to focus my attention on removing bad backlinks and this is how I found SEOmoz. My question is about duplicate content. The crawl diagnostics showed 6,000 errors for duplicate page content and the same for duplicate page title. After reviewing the details, it looks like almost every page is from the forum (shapefit.com/forum). What's the best way to resolve these issues? Should I completely block the "forum" folder from being indexed by Google or is there something I can do within the forum software to fix this (I use phpBB)? I really appreciate any feedback that would help fix these issues so the site can hopefully start recovering from Panda/Penguin. Thank you, Kris

Duplicate content issue in SEOmoz campaign.
Hi, We are running a campaign for a website in SEOmoz. We get a dup content issue warning: http://www.oursite.com and http://www.oursite.com/ are being seen as 2 different urls. Only difference among 2 urls is the trailing slash at the end of the second url. Why is this happening? I was aware of www vs non www but never heard of an issue related to the slash. Thanks for your help!
