Google local question - over optimization?
-
I run a law firm with multiple practice areas (bankruptcy, probate, estate planning, personal injury). I have a google places page with those categories listed. I recently spoke with an seo company (that cold called me...) that told me that it was "black hat" to try to optimize a local campaign for more than one of those practice areas. That doesn't seem right to me. Any thoughts?

Hi Jared,
Thanks for coming to Q&A with your good question. I'm the Local SEO Associate here in the forum and will do my best to understand and answer your query. Here are my thoughts:-
Firstly, don't trust SEO companies who cold call you. That's just one for the ages
-
Secondly, here are Google's complete written guidelines for categories:
Categories: Provide at least one category from the suggestions provided in the form as you type. Aim for categories that are specific, but brief.
- Categories should say what your business is (e.g. Hospital), not on what it does (e.g. Vaccinations) or things it sells (e.g. Sony products or printer paper). This information can be added in your description or as custom attributes.
- Categories should not contain location-based information (for example, Dog Walker Los Angeles is not permitted).
- Only one category is permitted per entry field. Do not “stuff” entry fields with multiple categories.
- Thirdly, there is absolutely nothing wrong with picking categories that represent your practice areas on your Google Place Page, provided they meet the above guidelines of saying what your business IS instead of what it does. So, this means you are a DUI Lawyer...not just 'DUI'. This distinction is important, and I believe the categories you have given as examples will need to be edited so that they list you as 'bankruptcy attorney, personal injury attorney' etc. *I strongly recommend that at least the first two categories you choose be Google's pre-set choices. If you'd like to see what possible pre-set category choices there are, use Mike Blumenthal's Google Places Category tool at:
http://blumenthals.com/index.php?Google_LBC_Categories
Be sure that your categories meet all of the guidelines and that you have listed no more than 5, and you should be fine.
- Thirdly, I have no idea why the cold-calling SEO said it was 'black hat' to optimize a local campaign for more than one area of practice. This is not logical. Perhaps there was a communication breakdown, or perhaps the caller simply didn't know what they were talking about. At any rate, it is very common for local business owners, be they dentists, lawyers or restaurant owners, to have different areas of specialization, and while it isn't okay to create a separate Place Page for each area of specialization, it's perfectly acceptable to categorize yourself in a variety of ways, so long as you are adhering to the guidelines.
Hope this helps!
Miriam

Hi Jared
I agree it's not right, in fact listing the specific categories is best practice (as long as you do offer those services). Also, rather than picking random categories, confirm that each category type you pick triggers a Places SERP.
Location 'stuffing' in categories has been know to be bad, but I assume they weren't referring to that.
Actually there was a moz webinar on Places last week
Thanks
Stuart

What Google+ URL to Take?
I could go with my Domain Name (/+tallahasseedefense) for simplicity sake and ease of remembering. However, would there be any SEO benefit to using a Google+ with both "Attorney" and "Tallahassee" in the URL (/+Casey&TorresAttorneysatLawTallahassee)? cna4R08

Any Legit Local Address Services Out There?
I have a client who lives in the UK but runs a US ecommerce site. I'd still like to get him some local trust signals but he has no options when it comes to getting an address here. Has anyone found a reputableplace where you can rent an address that isn't already being used by umpteen other companies?

Multiple Businesses in One Location + In One Google Places Account Under Review
HI, My Problem: Multiple businesses in one location, under one Google Places account, one being reviewed. My Question: see very bottom of this post Background: I am trying to help a client get both of his businesses ranking in Google Places. The problem is the office building has multiple doctors/practices in the same building and gave no business suite numbers to doctors that rent office space. Here is the list of the other businesses in the office: http://www.fullcirclefamilycare.com/health_care.htm. The problem escalates because the doctor I am trying to help has a chiropractic business & a spinal decompression business, both legal entities, both different registered company names, different phone numbers, and websites, but both located in this office building. He rents two offices (they should be suites) in the building. The problem escalates even more because the doctor has registered both locations (see below) in his Google Places account: Westchester Spinal Decompression Center

jointeffortchiro.com The first (spinal decompression) was registered a long time ago and ranks #1 for "spinal decompression white plains NY." The second he just confirmed the Google Post card a few weeks ago and has been under review since. More research so you can help me better: The "The Shop for Holistic Health / The Shop at Full Circle", a businesses location in the same office building has verified their account and ranks #1 for "women's health care white plains NY" and "midwife white plains NY." Another business,in the same office building "Keras-Donaghy Melissa S", has not claimed their listing and ranks #1 for "Women’s Health physical Therapist white plains NY" Another business, "Kuhl Josephine MD," has not claimed their listing ranks in the top 10 for "Adolescent Psychiatrist white plains NY." My Question: What do I do, wait it out and see if Google will remove the "under review" under his current Google Places account or do I add a suite number now and see if Google will send another post card? Or do I create a new account, add the business, add a suite number this time, and see if they will confirm it. I don't want to do this because the doctor already has 12 reviews on this Google Places account. If I do do this, what do I do with the Google Places account under review?0 -
Google Maps Service Areas
Hi, is there a limit on the number of service areas I can choose for my Google place/map listing.? For optimization purposes should I include the whole state, or each specific city. My keyword for google maps is not very competitive and I want to cover a few different states , I have the time to put specific cities just not sure if there is a restriction on number of service areas. Cheers

Will linking to my citation sources help google recognize them / credit my places account?
Or will those sources be discounted by google then similar to how google discounts link exchanges? I have noticed some pages, like mapquest, don't really have a directory, so google might not be aware of their content unless it is linked too??? In this type of a case, would it help to link to mapquest's search results? then the citation will get picked up by google? Example: http://www.mapquest.com/?hk=6-i30tP49i
