Caninical issue
-
Hello all,
I have a problem related to "canonical issues" that I would like to get your view on:
The issue:
Our site: http://www.texaspoker.dk/ has a "canonical issue" with the home page.
We added a redirect to www.texaspoker.dk, but this hasn't solved our problem.
In the latest "too many on page links" analysis made with SEOmoz' exelent SEO tool, we get the following error:
http://www.texaspoker.dk(101 on page links)
http://www.texaspoker.dk/?page=2 (on page links)
So, made simple, the analysis tells us that both http://www.texaspoker.dk and http://www.texaspoker.dk/?page=2 has too many on page links. How do I eliminate / remove the unwanted http://www.texaspoker.dk/?page=2 and how did it, in the first place, get there?
Thanks a lot!

Hi again,
I managed to fix it for the frontpage using the folowing PHP code:
if(isset($_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'])){
$get_uri = $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'];
if($get_uri!="/"){ $url = "/"; header('Location: ' . $url, true, 301);
}
}
?>

Hi @SEOConsult,
Will the .htaccess fix you mentioned affect other paginated pages on our site?
-
Hi again,
Thanks a lot for your answer and the solution to fix the problem on the front page.
We use Nginx as web server software but we can setup the .htaccess stuff in the .conf file. However we have other paginated pages on our site. Will the above mentioned solution affect all paginated pages on our site?

No problem Do you have a .htaccess file within the root directory? If not, create a new .htaccess file and add this rule:
RewriteRule ^page?=(.*)$ / [L,R=301]
I'd suggest that you add a canonical tag to all pages too.

Hi again,
Thanks for your advice - the thing is that this is what I have already tried. The problem here is that the site apparently allows one to write: http://www.texaspoker.dk/?page=3
http://www.texaspoker.dk/?page=4
etc.Do you - or anybody else - have an idea how I can stop this?
Thanks a lot, your advice is very much appreciated.
-
You're correct, that is a canonical issue. I'd suggest that you 301 redirect ?page=2 back to the root.
Good luck!

Hi SEOConsult,
Thanks a lot for the answer. I will try to get some of the links removed, as they are not all "necessary."
This being said, I still believe that it's a problem for my site that there are access to two different homepages (?):
and:
http://www.texaspoker.dk/?page=2
Thanks a lot, all suggestions are very much appreciated.

Hi there,
Firstly, I think it's important to note that the tool isn't telling you that the site has canonical issues. Canonical issues are basically when you can view the same page from more than one version of the URL.
The "too many links" issue is, as it suggests, the page has too many links.
At the moment the homepage (http://www.texaspoker.dk/) has 102 links, which is acceptable however you should look at removing any unnecassary links on-page. Generally, you should look at having few than 100 links on a page. Having 102 is fine but obviously if you can remove unnecessary links, do it.
The fewer links on the page the better
Hope that helps/clears things up!

Recovering from Sitemap Issues with Bing
Hi all, I recently took over SEO efforts for a large e-commerce site (I would prefer not to disclose). About a month ago, I began to notice a significant drop in traffic from Bing and uncovered in Bing Webmaster Tools that three different versions of the sitemap were submitted and Bing was crawling all three. I removed the two out of date sitemaps and re-submitted the up to date version. Since then, I have yet to see Bing traffic rebound and the amount of pages indexed by Bing is still dropping daily. During this time there has been no issue with traffic from Google. Currently I have 1.3 million pages indexed by Google while Bing has dropped to 715K (it was at 755K last week and was on par with Google several months ago). I know that no major changes have been made to the site in the past year so I can't point to anything other than the sitemap issue to explain this. If this is indeed the only issue, how long should I expect to wait for Bing to re-index the pages? In the interim I have been manually submitting important pages that aren't currently in the index. Any insights or suggestions would be very much appreciated!

I have multiple URLs that redirect to the same website. Is this an issue?
I have multiple URLs that all lead to the same website. Years ago they were purchased and were sitting dormant. Currently they are 301 redirects and each of the URLs feed to different areas of my website. Should I be worried about losing authority? And if so, is there a better way to do this?

Development Website Duplicate Content Issue
Hi, We launched a client's website around 7th January 2013 (http://rollerbannerscheap.co.uk), we originally constructed the website on a development domain (http://dev.rollerbannerscheap.co.uk) which was active for around 6-8 months (the dev site was unblocked from search engines for the first 3-4 months, but then blocked again) before we migrated dev --> live. In late Jan 2013 changed the robots.txt file to allow search engines to index the website. A week later I accidentally logged into the DEV website and also changed the robots.txt file to allow the search engines to index it. This obviously caused a duplicate content issue as both sites were identical. I realised what I had done a couple of days later and blocked the dev site from the search engines with the robots.txt file. Most of the pages from the dev site had been de-indexed from Google apart from 3, the home page (dev.rollerbannerscheap.co.uk, and two blog pages). The live site has 184 pages indexed in Google. So I thought the last 3 dev pages would disappear after a few weeks. I checked back late February and the 3 dev site pages were still indexed in Google. I decided to 301 redirect the dev site to the live site to tell Google to rank the live site and to ignore the dev site content. I also checked the robots.txt file on the dev site and this was blocking search engines too. But still the dev site is being found in Google wherever the live site should be found. When I do find the dev site in Google it displays this; Roller Banners Cheap » admin <cite>dev.rollerbannerscheap.co.uk/</cite><a id="srsl_0" class="pplsrsla" tabindex="0" data-ved="0CEQQ5hkwAA" data-url="http://dev.rollerbannerscheap.co.uk/" data-title="Roller Banners Cheap » admin" data-sli="srsl_0" data-ci="srslc_0" data-vli="srslcl_0" data-slg="webres"></a>A description for this result is not available because of this site's robots.txt – learn more.This is really affecting our clients SEO plan and we can't seem to remove the dev site or rank the live site in Google.Please can anyone help?

Penality issues
Hi there, I'm working on site that has been badly hit by penguin. The reasons are clear, exact match blog network links and tons of spammy exact match links such as comment spam, low quality directories, the usual junk. The spammy links were mainly to 2 pages, they were targetting keyword 1 and keyword 2. I'd like to remove these two pages from google, as they dont even rank in google now and create one high quality page that targets both the keywords, as they are similar. The dilemma I have is these spammy pages still get traffic from bing and yahoo and it's profitable traffic. Is there a safe way to remove the pages from google and leave them for bing and yahoo? Same Video on Multiple Pages and Sites... Duplicate Issues?
We're rolling out quite a bit of pro video and hosting on a 3-party platform/player (likely BrightCove) that also allows us to have the URL reside on our domain. Here is a scenario for a particular video asset: A. It's on a product page that the video is relevant for. B. We have an entry on our blog with the video C. We have a separate section of our site "Video Library" that provides a centralized view of all videos. It's there too. D. We eventually give the video to other sites (bloggers, industry educational sites etc) for outreach and link-building. A through C on our domain are all for user experience as every page is very relevant, but are there any duplicate video issues here? We would likely only have the transcript on the product page (though we're open to suggestions). Any related feedback would be appreciated. We want to make this scalable and done properly from the beginning (will be rolling out 1000+ videos in 2010)

Sitemaps - Format Issue
Hi, I have a little issue with a client site whose programmer seems kind of unwilling to change things that he has been doing a long time. So, he has had this dynamic site set up for a few years and active in google webmaster tools and others, but is not happy with the traffic it is getting. When I looked at webmaster tools I see that he has a sitemap registered, but it is /sitemap.php When I said that we should be offering the SE's /sitemap.xml his response is that sitemap.php checks the site every day and generates /sitemap.xml, but there is no /sitemap.xml registered in webmaster tools. My gut is telling me that he should just register /sitemap.xml in webmaster tools, but it is a hard sell 🙂 Anyone have any definitive experience of people doing this before and whether it is an issue? My feeling is that it doesn't need to be rocket science... Any input appreciated, Sha

WordPress Duplicate Content Issues
Everyone knows that WordPress has some duplicate content issues with tags, archive pages, category pages etc... My question is, how do you handle these issues? Is the smart strategy to use robots meta and add no follow/ no index category pages, archive pages tag pages etc? By doing this are you missing out on the additional internal links to your important pages from you category pages and tag pages? I hope this makes sense. Regards, Bill
