Temporarily Delist Search Results
-
We have a client that we run campaign sites for. They have asked us to turn off our PPC and SEO in the short term so they can run some tests. PPC no problem straight forward action, but not as straight forward to just turn off SEO. Our campaign site is on Page 1, Position 4, 3 places below our clients site. They have asked us to effectively disappear from the landscape for a period of 1-2 months.
Has anyone encountered this before, the ability to delist good SERP for a period of time?
Details: Very small site with only 17 pages indexed within google, but home page has good SERP result.
My issues are,
-
How to approach this in the most effective manor?
-
Once the delisting process is activated and the site/page disappears, then we reverse the process will we get back to where we were?
Anyone encountered this before?
I realise this is a ridiculous question and goes against SEO logic, get to page 1 results only to remove it, but hey, clients are always presenting new challenges for us to address.....
Thanks

SEOJellyfish,
There is no way that you can turn off the site, wait 1 to 2 months, turn the site on, and expect to be anywhere near where you were.
So, have you asked any more questions around the "testing" they need to do? I am assuming you are an affiliate and not an agency since you state a line between their site and your "campaign" site.
Are they just tired of paying affiliates?
What do they want to achieve with this?
How are they going to compensate you for going black for up to 2 months?
What are they going to test?
If you do this and the test finishes and you cannot readily regain your ranking, what changes in your relationship?
I think I would clarify all of this before moving to turn your site off.

JellyFish,
i think the best way to approach this is to use every possiblity provided by Google Webmaster including blocking Googlebot to crawl your pages. Then it should take some time to dissapear. You could also 301 redirect your pages (17 is not that bad) to other pages you want to rank higher with.
- if you ever get back to were you where is not certain and can't be said by anyone. I think their is a good chance that you can get your position back but i't can't be said for sure.
I never encountered this before but i can image the problem your client is having.
hope this helps
kind regards

Search Console - Best practice to fetch pages when you update them?
Hi guys, If you make changes to a page e.g. add more content or something is it good practice to get google to fetch that page again in search console? My assumption is this way, Google can review the updated page quicker, resulting in faster changes in the SERPs for that page. Thoughts? Cheers.

On-site Search - Revisited (again, *zZz*)
Howdy Moz fans! Okay so there's a mountain of information out there on the webernet about internal search results... but i'm finding some contradiction and a lot of pre-2014 stuff. Id like to hear some 2016 opinion and specifically around a couple of thoughts of my own, as well as some i've deduced from other sources. For clarity, I work on a large retail site with over 4 million products (product pages), and my predicament is thus - I want Google to be able to find and rank my product pages. Yes, I can link to a number of the best ones by creating well planned links via categorisation, silos, efficient menus etc (done), but can I utilise site search for this purpose? It was my understanding that Google bots don't/can't/won't use a search function... how could it? It's like expeciting it to find your members only area, it can't login! How can it find and index the millions of combinations of search results without typing in "XXXXL underpants" and all the other search combinations? Do I really need to robots.txt my search query parameter? How/why/when would googlebot generate that query parameter? Site Search is B.A.D - I read this everywhere I go, but is it really? I've read - "It eats up all your search quota", "search results have no content and are classed as spam", "results pages have no value" I want to find a positive SEO output to having a search function on my website, not just try and stifle Mr Googlebot. What I am trying to learn here is what the options are, and what are their outcomes? So far I have - _Robots.txt - _Remove the search pages from Google _No Index - _Allow the crawl but don't index the search pages. _No Follow - _I'm not sure this is even a valid idea, but I picked it up somewhere out there. _Just leave it alone - _Some of your search results might get ranked and bring traffic in. It appears that each and every option has it's positive and negative connotations. It'd be great to hear from this here community on their experiences in this practice.

Local Showroom Tel Showing Up in SERP for Branded Term Search?
We encountered an issue: when user search for a branded term in UK on Google UK, one of the showroom got listed in SERP under site links as a location with Location icon and takes over a few lines - their address and phone number are displayed. This caused confusion for user as it's only one of our showrooms and we don't want to direct calls to the showroom this way. I'm suspecting somehow the localization factor came into play but not sure how to remove the showroom phone number from being displayed. Anyone has any insight/experience with this? Thanks

Why is this page not being delivered for Google search result?
Hey folks, Figured I would try to get an experts insight on this. On google search result for BLACK TITANIUM RINGS + TITANIUM-JEWELRY.COM the page that I "think" should show up is this one: http://www.titanium-jewelry.com/black-titanium-rings.html However, it does not. Imho, this page is highly relevant. I used Rank Tracker here on seomoz.org and the page is not even in top 50 of search engine results for google. Our 'About Black Titanium Rings' page ranks #2 (http://www.titanium-jewelry.com/about-black-titanium.html) but the /black-titanium-rings.html page doesn't even rank. Any suggestions on what I could look at to figure out why this page is being penalized? We are not under a manual penalty (anymore!). Thanks! Ron

Block search bots on staging server
I want to block bots from all of our client sites on our staging server. Since robots.txt files can easily be copied over when moving a site to production, how can i block bots/crawlers from our staging server (at the server level), but still allow our clients to see/preview their site before launch?

Sudden drop in ranking for major search terms
Site bumpbabyandbeyond com au. Help! We have been operating for six years and had steadily built up our ranking for major terms like maternity clothes, maternity clothing, maternity wear, reaching highs of 6, 8 and 10 respectively for AU sites AU wide about six months ago that we have steadily maintained. All of a sudden we have dropped away. A week ago I noticed we had dropped from 6 to 12 for maternity clothes. This morning we are 21! I can't see any obvious reason for this, but believe the eCommerce module of our inventory/pos software has had a recent update - I'm awaiting answers on this. We haven't actively had anyone link building or working on SEO after being badly bitten and shelling out a small fortune for an AU company to do very little over six months - rankings improved rapidly when I sacked them and did some on page minor work myself. But I don't have the time or knowledge to look after the seo, and am on the hunt for reputable white hat assistance. Is there anything obviously wrong that I need to fix ASAP? Any help would be much appreciated 🙂

Universal Search vs Local Organic
Hi, My web site has high rankings in universal SERP's. However, in my city organic search the competitors’ web sites that even don’t show up in universal Serp’s have higher rankings than mine. Not sure what I’m doing wrong. Thanks for any insight.
