Country domain: Seo for other languages

Hi,
I have an italian domain (.it) for an italian hotel, it is an old authoritative domain (1997) and it is well optimized for the keywords that include the city the hotel is in, now the page is decently positioned in Google Italy.
There are many problems to have the same rank for German version (in google.de, google.at). The German version is in the /de folder.
The hotel has another .com domain, much less authoritative (2007), in a German server, but it was and is only a simple redirect 301 (by code) to the German version in the .it domain. (obviously the rank for this domain is almost nonexistent).
Do you have any suggestion? Thank you.

Ah, I apologise. I knew someone from South America who targeted a .co (Colombia's TLD) subfolder to Brazil, so I thought it was okay to do that for others. I've just looked it up and Google started to allow .co to be geotargeted in 2010, so I must have missed that. The clues are even in at least one of those links I provided. Slaps forehead
I don't think you want to mess with 301 redirecting the .it to a .com and risk losing some of the authority that's built up - would you say there's also a chance Italians prefer to click to a .it rather than a .com? Do you see yourself expanding to target other countries in future? If so it might be worth using the .com and geotargeting a .com/de, .com/fr etc. You also have to consider whether you have the resources to keep more than one website updated.
Other than that I can only think it's best to continue in your current form and do everything else you can to get the /de ranking higher in German speaking countries - obviously the language (use a native to write your content as well as help with the keyword research), and if possible include an address based in the country you're targeting on localised pages, is it possible to include some German information on your Google Places listing (if you don't have one, set one up!)?
Get inbound local links (maybe encourage German-speaking visitors to post on local review sites?) and get listed on every review, booking and tourist information site you can in the target country. Maybe you could get some German travel guides written for your city if you haven't already, perhaps something that could act as link-bait if there's anything unique or quirky you could come up with (a top 10?) or get guest posts written for German-speaking sites with a link to your /de subfolder?
The upside of doing this over the .com solution is all the links you get from Germany etc. will go towards the overall Domain Authority, rather than it being spread between the .com and .it. Of course all this helps even if you can geotarget.

When I add www.example.it/de/ to my GWT sites, it don't ask about verification (because the main domain was already verificated**).**
In Setting/Geo Target there is:
Destinazione geografica Il dominio del tuo sito è già associato alla destinazione: Italia
Translated: Geo target the domain is already associated to target: Italy
the same is for the root domain.
Geo target is only for generic domains (and some other particular domain)
bye

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying - it is possible.
When you add a site in Google Webmaster Tools, just add http://www.example.it/de/ as the site and upload the verification file (if you verify that way) to the de folder.

Have you targeted the /de folder to Germany (assuming Germany is your preference over Austria) in Google Webmaster Tools?
No, unlucky it is not possible for Country domains.
Did the .com used to be the German version of the site?
No, there is only the index.html 301 redirected on the domain.it/de
Thank you for the links.

Have you targeted the /de folder to Germany (assuming Germany is your preference over Austria) in Google Webmaster Tools? That will help immensely. You need to add it as a new site. It'll also help if you get links from the countries you want to target.
Did the .com used to be the German version of the site?
Here are some (I'd say must-view) links on the subject of international SEO:

Google displaying root domain instead of country locale
Hi, For many months now, Google refuses to display the relevant locale in many markets, and instead shows the root domain as number 1 result. The country locale isn't even in the SERP in some countries(!). This only applies for branded searches. It appears Google is treating the root domain as an international landing page or something, while this isn't the case - visitors get redirected automatically based on their Geo-IP to the relevant country locale if they enter the root domain, there is no "flag selector" that people or bots can choose. Site: example.com If someone searches for "example" from Google Canada, they should be met with example.com/en-ca/ as the first result for branded searches. Instead, example.com is ranking, and example.com/en-ca/ is nowhere to be found. This problem is in all our English markets; Canada, India and UK. For non-english countries, branded searches return the relevant locale, but the root domain is often the 2nd result as well. This isn't as bad as the case with the English markets, but still. Any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated, or if you can recommend great reading assets. I have researched this thoroughly and tried different technical solutions, but nothing has worked so far. Thanks!

Running 2 different domains
Hi guys, Something i'd like appreciate any opinion on... We own a local domain www.goodycard.co.nz but we're expanding overseas. I've purchased www.goodyhq.com as we'd like to drop the 'card' from URL. We can't get www.goodycard.com. The local site has a decent ranking, but obviously, the newly created HQ site doesn't. What's the best way to tie these in (or even ditch the .co.nz) but retain rank? And what's the best way for users to discover the HQ site? Any insight would help, as both sites are kind of different. One has a local member base and the other just sells software so it really depends on the region of search. Cheers!

Same language selector on 2 different Multilingual domains?
Hello I hope you can help me to clarify my doubts I have a multilingual domain www.domain.com structured like this: www.domain.com www.domain.com/es/ www.domain.com/fr/ www.domain.com/it/ www.domain.com/de It contains a language selector list on the header where people can change the language of the website like this English Spanish French Italian German I want to move the German language to a separate domain. I have recently bought the LDT www.domain.de especially for that. QUESTION 1: Can I still mention the german language on the language selector of www.domain.com in order to drive german people (that lands to the English version) to the external domain www.domain.de (maybe with no follow)? Like this: English Spanish French Italian German linked to the external domain www.domain.de QUESTION 2: Can I also mention on www.domain.de the same language selector like this: English linked to www.domain.com Spanish linked to www.domain.com/es/ French linked to www.domain.com/fr/ Italian linked to www.domain.com/it/ I am bit worried because I don’t want to create be interpreted like a reciprocal circle linsk or a kind of link scheme Thank you

Will Links to one Sub-Domain on a Site hurt a different Sub-Domain on the same site by affecting the Quality of the Root Domain?
Hi, I work for a SaaS company which uses two different subdomains on our site. A public for our main site (which we want to rank in SERPs for), and a secure subdomain, which is the portal for our customers to access our services (which we don't want to rank for) . Recently I realized that by using our product, our customers are creating large amounts of low quality links to our secure subdomain and I'm concerned that this might affect our public subdomain by bringing down the overall Authority of our root domain. Is this a legitimate concern? Has anyone ever worked through a similar situation? any help is appreciated!

International Seo - Canada
Our organization is currently only operating in the USA but will soon be entering the Canadian market. We did a lot of research and decided that for our needs it would be best to use a subfolder for Canada. Initially we will be targeting the english speaking community but eventually we will want to expand to the french speaking Canadians as well. The question is - is there a preferred version in setting up the subfolders: www.website.org/ca/ -- default will be english www.website.org/ca/fr/ - french www.website.org/en-ca/ - english www.website.org/fr-ca/ - french www.website.org/ca/en/ -english www.website.org/ca/fr/ - french Thanks

Redirection Impact on SEO
Need help urgently. There is the situation [This is how is it working now]: 1. Have a global landing page [say when user types in www.mysite.com - takes user to the global landing page: [www.mysite.com/global/en.html]](http://www.mysite.com/global/en.html] ) 2. Users from this landing page can select a country on his/her choice and get redirected say: [www.mysite.com/us/en.html] Would like to change the functionality as below: 1. When user types in www.mysite.com 1a. Would find the location of the request based on GEO IP and if the request is coming from North America region then would redirect the users to: www.mysite.com/us/en.html 1b. If the request is from any other location/region then it would continue to work as it is currently working: take the user to the global landing page: www.mysite.com/global/en.html Would this change have any negative impact or not found by search engines from SEO perspective? If it does then what are the impacts and if does not then why not. If it does then what is the best possible way to address this request. Appriciate your help. Thanks, Koushik Roy

Sub Domain SEO
I am thinking to Add Sub Domains to get better rankings for Local Searches. So I will develop City Specific Sites with Specific Language. For Example qatar.wisnetsol.com. IT will be in Arabic. If my Good standing and Ranking on Google for wisnetsol.com will help my subdomain to rank better? if we setup wisnetsol.com/qatar, how it can target Qatar in Google Webmaster tools? Will links for qatar.wisnetsol.com and wisnetsol.com are seprate? What do you think about this strategy? Is it good or bad?
