Pages with Little Content
-
I have a website that lists events in Dublin, Ireland. I want to provide a comprehensive number of listings but there are not enough hours in the day to provide a detailed (or even short) unique description for every event. At the moment I have some pages with little detail other than the event title and venue. Should I try and prevent Google from crawling/indexing these pages for fear of reducing the overall ranking of the site? At the moment I only link to these pages via the RSS feed.
I could remove the pages entirely from my feed, but then that mean I remove information that might be useful to people following the events feed.
Here is an example page with very little content

If you've already cut internal links and they're only in RSS, I probably would NOINDEX them, personally. You're basically telling Google that they're low-value (for now, at least) but then you're letting them be [possibly] indexed and potentially diluting the rest of your index (and ranking power). That way, people can still access them, but you're not risking Panda issues or other problems.
Over time, as you add content and boost your domain authority and link profile, you can start phasing in more pages.

Hi As Brent has said you cannot prevent Google from crawling the site. Once the site is indexed and Google starts to visit the site more frequently it is likely at some point to find the pages. However, based on the limited information and more importantly the lack of any real unique content i would advise that you take what ever steps you can from limiting the visibility of these pages. I do not believe you will lose rank but you certainly will not gain any. Thanks

_First of all Google would still find the pages since your site most _
likely links to them?
Actually there are only currently links to the pages with an actual
description. I have disabled links to those with no description. The
way the site is set up at the moment means that a page is created,
but not necessarily linked to
(see [http://www.dublinbynumbers.com/events/live-music](http://www.dublinbynumbers.com/events/live-music)).
_After looking at your example page what if you made a unique _
_description for each artist / performer and then have a list _
_of events that is always changing under them that way you have _
_some type of unique content that would be helpful._
I think I'd have the same problem there would still be thousands of
artists (nevermind festivals etc). I do want to list as many events
as possible and I think my users would prefer a comprehensive number
of listings without descriptions rather than a small number of event
listings with descriptions. Some listings do have more substantial
descriptions e.g. [St Patrick's Day in Dublin](http://www.dublinbynumbers.com/events/arts-culture/festivals/st-patricks-festival-and-parade "St Patrick's Day")
My overall question is should I prevent Google from indexing pages
with little content (as the original example) or just let it
do it's thang au naturale?

Hi Andy,
First of all Google would still find the pages since your site most likely links to them? ( And if not how would users find these otherwise? )
After looking at your example page what if you made a unique description for each artist / performer and then have a list of events that is always changing under them that way you have some type of unique content that would be helpful.

Content Strategy/Duplicate Content Issue, rel=canonical question
Hi Mozzers: We have a client who regularly pays to have high-quality content produced for their company blog. When I say 'high quality' I mean 1000 - 2000 word posts written to a technical audience by a lawyer. We recently found out that, prior to the content going on their blog, they're shipping it off to two syndication sites, both of which slap rel=canonical on them. By the time the content makes it to the blog, it has probably appeared in two other places. What are some thoughts about how 'awful' a practice this is? Of course, I'm arguing to them that the ranking of the content on their blog is bound to be suffering and that, at least, they should post to their own site first and, if at all, only post to other sites several weeks out. Does anyone have deeper thinking about this?

What to do about endless size pages
I'm working on a site that sells products that come in many different sizes. One product may come in 30 sizes. The products themselves are identical, except for the size. There are collections pages that are all of several kinds of product in a particular size and then there are individual product pages of one product the specific size. Collections pages for widgets size 30 is the same content as widgets size 29. A single product page for gold-widget-size-30 is the same content as the single product page gold-widget-size-29. To make matters worse, they all have the same tags and very little written content. The site is in Shopify. Last month there were almost 400 pages that produced visits on organic, mostly in the 1 to 4 per month range, but all together about 1000 visits. There are several hundred more that produced no traffic in organic, but are duplicate (except for size) and part of this giant ball of tangled string. What do you think I should do? Thanks... Mike

Page Authority
Hi We have a large number of pages, all sitting within various categories. I am struggling to rank a level 3 for example, or increase authority of this page. Apart from putting it in the main menu or trying to build quality links to it, are there any other methods I can try? We have so many pages I find it hard to workout what the best way to internal link these pages for authority. At the moment they're classified in their relevant categories, but these go from level 1 down to 4 - is this too many classification levels?

Pages with similar content: Redirect or Canonical? Or something else?
We have two pages on our site with similar content. One was originally a landing page for a marketing campaign, somewhat of a micro-site feel with a lot of content. We recently optimized another page on the site with much of the same content from the original landing page/micro-site. In order to avoid duplicate content, and to let Google know our authority page is the new page, we're wondering what is best practice: Should we... 301 redirect the old page? No index the old page? Keep both pages and use a canonical to tell Google the new page is authority? Or something else?

404 Pages. Can I change it to do this without getting penalized ? I want to lower our bounce rate from these pages to encourage the user to continue on the site
Hi All, We have been streaming our site and got rid of thousands of pages for redundant locations (Basically these used to be virtual locations where we didn't have a depot although we did deliver there and most of them was duplicate/thin content etc ). Most of them have little if any link value and I didn't want to 301 all of them as we already have quite a few 301's already We currently display a 404 page but I want to improve on this. Current 404 page is - http://goo.gl/rFRNMt I can get my developer to change it, so it will still be a 404 page but the user will see the relevant category page instead ? So it will look like this - http://goo.gl/Rc8YP8 . We could also use Java script to show the location name etc... Would be be okay ? or would google see this as cheating. basically I want to lower our bounce rates from these pages but still be attractive enough for the user to continue in the site and not go away. If this is not a good idea, then any recommendations on improving our current 404 would be greatly appreciated. thanks Pete

Should I merge these pages
I have this business and am not sure if I should have a separate page for all of the different roofing subservices or if i should put them all on one page. Even though they are separate, but related services, I feel they could end up competing against one another If I merge them I will also have more related and keyword rich content on one page that I could focus my efforts on.
