For a UK company is it worth swapping from .com to .co.uk
-
I currently own the domain lionseo.com and I also own the .co.uk variant some of the keywords I am targeting will have UK in them. My thoughts are that a .co.uk may help improve rankings on google.co.uk and click through + have a keyword match in the home page URL.
**Do you guys think it's worth swapping to the .co.uk domain from .com? **
Thanks in advance

Hi Hannah,
"I think" I will just leave the .com in place...
I can see a lot more .co.uk's in the SERP's for my keywords but perhaps that is just because I live in England and everyone has bought .co.uk's
I have already done the geo targeting in web master tools and claimed a places page etc.
Thanks for your help

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Hi Keith,
If I were you I'd stick with the .com - I've not seen any evidence to suggest that using a .co.uk makes any difference to UK rankings. I don't think you'll see any major issues with CTR either.
I'm assuming that you're not having any US v UK issues right now E.G. - you're ranking better in the US than the UK, receiving more US than UK traffic etc. However if this is the case you could implement geo-targeting via webmaster tools, claim a Places listing (if you haven't already) etc to send some more signals about where you're located.
I hope this helps,
Hannah

I run a web development business in the UK and we have several domain variations such as .co.uk, .com, .net, .eu, but we are using .co.uk as the main one and do the 301 redirect on all the other ones so if someone types in .com variation in the url they will be redirected straight to .co.uk one.

To be honest I think a good strategy could be:
1. Make the .co.uk focused on - UK content, UK host, and uk specific data.
2. Keep the .com for US based clients with a US influence.
I mean if your only market is .co.uk and you only want to gather uk traffic I would look at implementing a 301 redirect from the .com to the .co.uk domain.

I would 301
-
Who knows, it's possible... But not right now
-
mostly UK
-
Nothing at all
I would love to hear from a person who has actually done this to find out if it's worth while from a ranking prospective.

Do you have much pre-existing link equity built up against pages on the .com?
-
Do you ever anticipate moving out of targeting a pure UK based client list?
-
Where does the majority of traffic come from today? i.e., is it mostly from the UK/where you want it to come from OR is it mostly from outside of the UK?
-
What would stop you from targeting the keywords now and reviewing performance in terms of traffic etc using the .com domain and then potentially utilising the .co.uk as a secondary measure if necessary?

I own both domains, when i say swapping I mean go through the effort of 301'ing the .com to the .co.uk
I have read up on this and I know most people will say that swapping domains won't make much difference, however it would be great to hear from some one who has actually done this.
Thanks

Should brand/company be included in meta title?
Is there any point/benefit/requirement in using brand/company name in the meta title, I realise search engines like Google prefer brand focused pages, However it is unlikely that someone would be including the company in our search terms. Any thoughts?

Schema - LocalBusiness markup for national companies
If we are marking up schema for a company that does services nationally, but has one physical location, should we use LocalBusiness for the organization type? It's an advertising company that is based in North Carolina, but services companies nationally. Thanks as always friends!

Impact seomoz.org to moz.com?
HI Seomoz, Yes, this question is to you :-), but it might come in handy for the rest of us. With the revamp of your service and website, you guys also decided to change your web address to Moz.com. Myself and perhaps others here consider to do the same. Yet I fear loss in the SERP's. Did you guys experience any loss in the SERP's for your most valuable keywords? What was your plan of action?

Competitor keyword image alt tag on their templates company logo
A competitor with maybe a couple of hundred pages throughout their website has recently added an image alt tag of a keyword to their company logo which links back to there homepage. The homepage is not particularly optimized towards this keyword and do not use the keyword within the text content at all apart from within the page title, So the image and link destination are not relevant towards the keyword. They seem to rank well for this competitive keyword in our industry using what i see as a slightly unethical internal linking strategy. We are currently working on some solid content to compete with this, but i was just wanting some advice on the situation, How does Google not see this as manipulative having the same link in the template from each page?

Is it worth switching from .net to .com if you own both domain names
For over 20 years the company I work for has used www.company.net as their TLD, because we could not register www.company.com at that time. However, currently we also own www.company.com www.company.com has a 301 re-direct to www.company.net We are a global company, and market leader in our industry. Our company name is associated with the product we make, and our competitors use our company name as their targeted keywords to attract visitors to their sites because our company name is synonym with the product we and they make. As we are a global company we also have lots of TLDcc's. The email address of all our employees worldwide have a .net email address extension. Would you advice switching from www.company.net to www.company.com??? And if so, what would be the reasons for this switch. Would it only be for branding purposes? Looking forward to some insights before taking on such an invasive switch (because of the switch of all email addresses of employees worldwide). Best regards, Astrid Groeneveld

Linking Sister-Sites - Diapers.com Example
Many of the big guns like 1800 Flowers, Diapers.com and others all have their sister sites in tabs at the top. Example: http://www.diapers.com/ with their 3 other properties. Since all properties link to one another on every page, it's really a wash, right? No real gain as engines know they are connected and it's the same link multiple times. No real problem either as it's natural for the user experience to have reciprocal links here between the brands. Any additional thoughts here?

Redirecting www.example.com to www.example.com/directory/
Hi All, There's been some internal debate going back and forth about redirecting the homepage of a site to a directory. There are a few different POVs circulating, one of which is that it's no different than redirecting to a /index page. Basically, the homepage is ranking for the keyword that we want the directory to rank for but I can't seem to justify placing this type of redirect. The content on both pages is different, but for the term both the homepage and the directory make sense to rank. Has anyone ever done anything like this before? Can anyone see any reason to do something like this? I believe this move would dilute the link value we currently have going to the homepage and potentially cause us to lose our #2 slot with the homepage in favor of a lower spot with the directory. I'd love to hear any thoughts on this/learn if anyone has experimented with this tactic. Thanks in advance!
